Dont Buy Carpet Without Reading These Tested Tips

  • Sep 25, 2010 from castpro
castpro Just moved into your dream house, huh? Feel kinda strange and unfamiliar, does it? Maybe the carpeting could use a face lift. Because a great way to liven up the place is by replacing the floor covering. Trust me the affect can be dramatic. And I'll just bet the following tips will be useful for carpet buying "virgins" like yourself.
First take note of the living areas where you want the new carpet. Taking into consideration what you need your carpet to stand up to. Kids, pets, how much entertaining you do, along with likely household traffic patterns are just some of the things that must be considered when choosing carpet. If a room gets high traffic you want to be sure to get the better quality stuff rather than flimsy FHA grade.
What type of home is this? If this is a starter house you may not be there until retirement. Which is to say the anticipated length of your stay in a house affects the kind of carpet you should buy. If it's just a few years you can go cheaper. If longer buy the best that you can afford.
Spills are not a crime. They happen to both young and old alike. But milk, coffee or wine to your pet's occasional accidents can take their toll on your fresh, new carpet. Guess this is why stain resistant carpet was invented.
To some choosing the right color is an important but complicating factor in their decision process. Sure those stylish colors or designs are 'in' nowadays but what will happen after a few years? You might also keep in mind that light colors reveal stains whereas dark colors will make the room look smaller.
So what's the best color choice for carpets? For my money neutrals like beiges, browns and earth tones. They make your room seem bigger. They're durable. Plus they go with the most any lighting and furnishing choices you make. Now or in the future.
Most don't realize that padding can extend or shorten the life of their carpet. Aside from protecting and preserving the fibers it also absorbs the wear that comes with foot traffic. So if you anticipate heavy foot traffic, get the best pad together with a good carpet. Usually a 6-8 pound pad is a good choice. Just remember that getting the most durable pad is not cheap but when it comes to protecting your investment, it's a wise choice.
Carpet buying is an investment. That's why it's important to have a budget and stick to it. Don't be like others who get so excited they get carried away. There are different grades of carpet. Your job is to find the best that's within your budget.
Last but certainly not least is to understand what to expect from the installers. Note if they will get take up and get rid of the old carpet. Will you be expected to move the furniture or will they do it for you? When it comes to the labor what kind of guarantee is there? By being aware of such details can prevent any hidden surprises later on.
If what you've just read really stoked your desire to replace your carpet, hold your horses! This is a huge decision that needs to be thought through. It's like moving without moving out. Don't get too eager and excited. Impulsive carpet buying leads to mistake you will live with for a long time.

Patriotic grace, what it is and why we need it now

Creator: Peggy Noonan | History - 2008-09-30

Presents an appeal for unity behind the new American president who will assume power in 2009, seeing that occasion as an opportunity for political leaders to overcome the divisions and disagreements of the past and work together with the ...

Publisher: Harper

About this book
In this long season of searing political attacks and angry partisan passions, Peggy Noonan's Wall Street Journal column has been must reading for thoughtful liberals and conservatives alike. Now she issues an urgent, heartfelt call for all Americans to see each other anew, realize what time it is, and come together to support the next President—whoever he is. Because it is not the threats and challenges we face, but how we face them that defines us as a nation. The terrible events of 9/11 brought us together in a way not seen since World War II. But the stresses and divisions of the Bush years have driven us apart to a point that is unhealthy and destructive. Today, Noonan argues, the national mood is for a change in our politics and it is well past time for politicians to catch up. Americans are tired of the old partisan divisions and the campaign tricks that seek to widen and exploit them. We long for leaders who can summon us to greatness and unity, as they did in the long struggles against fascism and communism. In this timely little book, written in the pamphleteering tradition of Tom Paine's Common Sense, Noonan reminds us that we must face our common challenges together—not by rising above partisanship, but by reaffirming what it means to be American.

    Extremely dissatisfied

After reading the other 5 star reviews I ordered this item. I wanted to replace my Shark cordless sweeper that was wearing out. The Dirt Devil was more flimsy than the Shark. It didn't pick up as well. The entire top of the sweeper was covered with dust after I used it; this never happened with the Shark. It was hard to turn on and off with my foot compared to the Shark. The final problem occurred after I had used it for less than a week and the left wheel broke off. I returned it for a refund.Although my experience with this product was disappointing, as always, my experience with Amazon was completely satisfactory. They have a return policy with no questions asked and send you a return mailing label. I find myself buying more and more from Amazon because of their superior customer service. 1/5 Hollida Wakefield Underwager "Hollida Wakefield" (Northfield, MN USA) - See all my reviews, January 9, 2010

    Great Little Sweeper

This model Dirt Devil is a great little sweeper; it fits under chairs and other furniture; and it is lightweight and quiet. It runs quite a while on a single charge. 5/5 D. Danko - See all my reviews, June 26, 2009

We will never go back to regular sweeping! Great for the elderly.

I bought this for my elderly mom to help out with basic cleanup since the vacuum is too heavy for her, and she can't bend her back very well to do regular sweeping. To her, this sweeper is a god-send. It picks up everything rather well from carpets and the bare kitchen floor. It is super light and maneuvers around very easily. Also, Amazon's price is half of what we saw at the store!Awesome sweeper for fast cleanup between vacuumings. 5/5 SpunkyBunks (Rio Rancho, NM USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Everything you want in a hand vac

It is powerful (little loud and it does blow from the side vents quite strong). It has a little built in brush which is great for sofas. The basket is small and needs to be emptied frequently to get the full power of the vac. I wish it had a stick to I didn't have to bend the whole time I was using it. When it's clean it will pick up the scattered sand from the cat box which many others don't do and it does a great job on dog hair. It has a little extension nozzle for getting under the frig and in the corners. I use this and the Eureka Boss stick vac, with rotating brush for carpets, daily and only need to use my full size vacuum a couple times a month. It's definitely worth the money. 5/5 Carol "kepela" (Chatsworth, CA United States) - See all my reviews, April 9, 2004

    Awesome hand vac

This hand vac is great! It has perfect suction and a good amount of run time. The suction hole is a good size and the debris cup is large, easy to dump and rinsable. Filters are super easy to find and order at dirtdevil.com. The quick flip crevice tool is very handy. This vacuum is very nice. I've owned it a month and use it often to clean up after my kids. It works beautifully. 5/5 T. Owens (MD, U.S.) - See all my reviews, February 16, 2004

    TERRIBLE DESIGN!!

I thought the crevis tool would be a real help..NOT. I bought two vacuums and within a month both of the crevis tools broke off! The suction area on the end of the vacuum does not meet with the floor very well making it very difficult to vacuum up anything.Save your money purchase a different design! 1/5 Bonnie Lueck - See all my reviews, November 17, 2005

    Does what I need ...

Here's my situation. I have a cat box in my bathroom and I really didn't like sweeping the kitty litter up every day - the broom would kick up dust and I would invariably miss a bit of kitty litter.I needed something small, light that I could drag out and buzz around the bathroom (hard surface) with. This fits the bill perfectly. It's not exactly quiet, but not too bad either.I don't like the rechargeable stick vacs because my closet doesn't have a power outlet and I really don't want to leave it out and look at the thing. In addition, corded stick vacs tend to be more powerful and don't run down, but you do have to put up with a cord. This stick vac is basically a dustbuster with a telescopic handle and a detachable (bare) floor nozzle. It is not going to compete with a regular vacuum, but for light cleanup (e.g. kitty litter) it works just fine. I also use it on the low-pile carpeting just outside the bathroom door to pick up any stray kitty litter... 4/5 Software Guy (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good vac for quick pickup-deserves 4 stars

This is a complete revision of an earlier review in which I complained about noise and hard-to-access dust cup - would now give it 4 stars but apparently am not allowed to change my initial rating during an "edit". Once I learned to press the release completely, I find the dust cup easy to access. It does a good job of picking up cat hairs and bits/pieces from the carpet surface and hardwood; the dust cup holds a much larger quantity than I would have expected from a vacuum this size. So lightweight - easy to grab out of a closet and give the house a once over. Would have given it 5 stars if it were not so noisy - I use earplugs when running it. People who seem to expect this vacuum to substitute for a full-size on carpet aren't being reasonable - this one does a great job for what it is intended. 2/5 Anrol (OH) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Better than full-sized.

I've been through three full-sized vacs looking for one as good as this one - my oldest, bag-using Hoover Elite was as good at vacuuming, but much heavier. The two Hoovers I've bought since then, with and without bags, haven't been half as good at getting up dog fur and kitty litter. So now, I'm just buying a second Boss for the downstairs. It even handles couch cushions and other upholstery - the only thing it doesn't do is get into nooks and crannies, since it doesn't have attachments. I use this vacuum several times a week, since there's no "hauling out" or "cord wrapping" or other headaches to deal with - fifteen minutes, and the job is done. Can't recommend it enough. 5/5 CynBio (Catonsville, MD United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
