About this book
Fascinating stories of how everyday people made millions with ingenious inventions that changed the world--at least a little bitFrau Melitta Bentz couldn't stand seeing coffee grounds in her friends' teeth at a coffee klatch one day so invented the coffee filter and went on to make millions with her Melitta Corporation. Divorced mother Bette Nesmith was unaccustomed to using an electric typewriter that was unforgiving of errors. A freelance artist, she brought a tiny bottle of white tempera paint to work the next day and created Liquid Paper. (Her original name for the product was Mistake Out, and her son is Mike Nesmith of The Monkees fame). These are just a few of the fascinating stories told in Why Didn't I Think of That?. They are tales about some of the world's best loved inventions and ideas that made life easier for everyone, and made life very easy for their inventors who rode their renown all the way to the bank.Insightful, detailed, and always quirky, why Didn't I Think of That? chronicles the odd origins of famous products, explores how these inventions changed our lives, and reveals the business side of their production and distribution. We learn of inventors from all walks of life striking it rich with unlikely contraptions that range from the practical--Tupperware and tampax--to the curiously inane--silly putty and Barbie dolls. A GREAT bagless vacuum, but be aware of what you are buying

DISCUSSION:We have a larger house and so prefer to have 2 vacuums for different areas (carpet vs tile floors). For example there is no power brush on the floor attachment of this vacuum so it works best on smooth surfaces such as wood or tile floors. My petite wife Really likes it because it is light weight and easy to maneuver which is a big plus. After all we men sometimes forget who it is that normally performs the vacuuming in a house. As the man of the house I have volunteered to clean the vacuum when necessary so have lots of experience with that part of it. Cleaning is a little messy but no big deal. If you prefer not having the convenience of a vacuum that uses a replaceable bag then REGULAR CLEANING IS REQUIRED. We have had this vacuum for just over a year and it has given us no problems at all. All the attachments including the hose are very sturdy and obviously designed to last. Its used weekly.I would like to offer my compliments to the... 4/5 Grigori Efimovich Rasputin "The Mad Monk" (St Petersburg, Russia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil SD40010 EZ Lite Bagless Canister (Kitchen) DISCUSSION:We have a larger house and so prefer to have 2 vacuums for different areas (carpet vs tile floors). IMPORTANT INFO regarding CLOGS

I've owned this vac for about 2 months and began experiencing loss of suction and poor performance. I was literally at wit's end and ready to throw the thing out the window. I bought new filters and still the same problems. I read the instruction manual over and over, looking for some reason. Here's the deal that the instruction manual DOESN'T mention: there is a pre-filter inside the plastic "bagless" collector part you pull out and empty (NOT related to the grey sponge or the HEPA filter). Open the bottom of the dirt/dust collector. Empty the contents and look up inside. There is a black cylinder inside a clear cylindrical receiver. I hold the bagless collector in my left hand so when I turn it upside down, the assembly is on the right. You can't miss it, although I did for 2 months. That is where all the hair and other light-weight junk builds up!!! Give the black cylinder a counter-clockwise twist, pull it out, and clean. I literally pulled out about a packed 8-ounce... 4/5 Anthony C. Slay "I Be Shoppin'" (Charlotte, NC) - See all my reviews, May 6, 2011

Wish I could give ZERO STARS

This vac was impressive out of the box. the suction was amazing... for a week. You quickly will discover that his vac takes an enormous amount of TLC. If you have a woman in the house with longish hair, or pets, it will clog up immediately. You have to use your fingers or a tool to pull out the debris EVERY time you vacuum. The filter pad has direct contact with debris, so it need to be replaced or washed every few vacuums. WE VACUUM EVERY DAY.. not carpet.. hard wood floors.. and this vac lasted a month before it completely died, despite all our extra care of unclogging, etc.I'm not sure what it is supposed to vacuum up. It can't handle hair.. it chokes on anything bigger than a cheerio.Miserable, awful product. Went into the garbage today.I suspect it has probably already been discontinued.PLEASE don't waste your money. 1/5 Twinsboystwice (House of Clone) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2010

Good choice for small areas/hard floors; bagged versions also available

I needed a very compact vac to use mainly in the bathroom to clean up after haircuts. I've been using a cordless model but lacked the power to get the job done to my satisfaction. So, the hunt began for a compact corded model.I looked at several hand-held units that offered a hose attachment. But, while they would have been fine for counter top work, I would have had to crouch or kneel down to get the floor done. Stick brooms would work fine on the floor, but didn't have the attachments for counter work. That left a canister. I have several other Bissell products that have worked well, so thought I'd give the Zing a shot. Overall, it's an excellent product considering the price. The suction power is outstanding - I'd put it on a par with my Panasonic cannister vac that cost much, much more. In fact, the suction is a little too good - it will easily suck up hair cutting attachments if you're not careful. Zero complaints in terms of power. No complaints... 4/5 Comdet - See all my reviews, April 17, 2011

The floor attachment needs a better design

I'll start by saying this vacuum is NOT for carpets, period. It doesn't have any kind of beater bar and doesn't glide over carpet at all. I got this to do quick post-toddler dinner clean ups. The vacuum unit itself has a good design and plenty of suction. It is lightweight and would be great to carry around using the hose itself to clean nooks and crannies, but this ability is limited to nooks and crannies since it is blatantly missing a drapery or upholstery attachment. After going across my hardwood floors it sucked up quite a bit of dirt and lint & I didn't think my floors were that dirty. My complaint is that the floor attachment needs to be redesigned, which is too bad because it's primarily why I bought this unit. The part that slides accross the floor is maybe 8 inches wide or so, but really only the middle maybe 2 inches has a hole for suction. The rest of it doesn't, well, suck. There's not even an opening for it. I'm not sure why the thing is even 8 inches wide, it could... 3/5 Katie Kate "Kate" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great lightweight vacuum

I am a young bachelor who hates vacuuming and hates schlepping a vacuum up the spiral staircase to the third floor. This little vacuum made both of those activities relatively painless. It is extremely lightweight but still sucks well (in layman's terms) on both carpet and hardwood floors. It also doesn't take up much closet space. The only fault I can find with this vacuum is that there is no place to clip on the one alternate attachment, but it's a very minor issue. I would heartily recommend this vacuum to anyone, but especially to housework-haters like myself, college students, and elderly or petite people looking for a very lightweight, easily portable vacuum. 5/5 Anonymous - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
