About this book
Fascinating stories of how everyday people made millions with ingenious inventions that changed the world--at least a little bitFrau Melitta Bentz couldn't stand seeing coffee grounds in her friends' teeth at a coffee klatch one day so invented the coffee filter and went on to make millions with her Melitta Corporation. Divorced mother Bette Nesmith was unaccustomed to using an electric typewriter that was unforgiving of errors. A freelance artist, she brought a tiny bottle of white tempera paint to work the next day and created Liquid Paper. (Her original name for the product was Mistake Out, and her son is Mike Nesmith of The Monkees fame). These are just a few of the fascinating stories told in Why Didn't I Think of That?. They are tales about some of the world's best loved inventions and ideas that made life easier for everyone, and made life very easy for their inventors who rode their renown all the way to the bank.Insightful, detailed, and always quirky, why Didn't I Think of That? chronicles the odd origins of famous products, explores how these inventions changed our lives, and reveals the business side of their production and distribution. We learn of inventors from all walks of life striking it rich with unlikely contraptions that range from the practical--Tupperware and tampax--to the curiously inane--silly putty and Barbie dolls. Shocked at other reviews

Wow! I'm a little shocked at the bad reviews! I bought this on black friday for $[...] and I LOVE it! I had previously used a swiffer sweep & vac (the battery died and it didn't clean up bigger messes) and then I bought the shark stick vac (one of my kids knocked it over and cracked it). So I purchased this as a third stick vac. I love it. It is very powerful, I don't understand these people saying it doesn't pick up messes. It totally picks up messes big and small!!! We remodeled our kitchen and I used it to vaccumm little sheetrock particles as well as the every day messes my 4, 5 year old kids & 3 year old lab leave behind. I have had some issues finding a new filter at walmart and target but I suspect I will find one easily online. Overall I LOVE this vac. I use it only for my tile areas and yes maybe you do have to empty it semi-often (but I have forgotten about it alot and never had a problem)it works great for cleaning up after my 2 kids and dog. 4/5 Holly Evans "Hevans" (Midland, Tx) - See all my reviews, May 16, 2010

    Great for small jobs

Got this on sale at Target for $10 (Black Friday) and it's a decent little machine. Great for vacuuming my area rug and hardwood floors. I wouldn't expect this machine to clean up a large mess. Very lightweight, easy to maneuver and much quieter than a full size vac. Nice that it also transforms into a hand vac. In one use it picked up a lot of dust and cat hair that wasn't evident. Definitely a keeper! 4/5 Kath&Chloe "KC" (Beverly Hills, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil SD20000RED Simpli-Stik All-in-One Stick Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) Got this on sale at Target for $10 (Black Friday) and it's a decent little machine. Great little vacuum for small spaces!

I got this vacuum on one of those Black Friday deals, and wasn't expecting much, since it was so cheap, & the box was so light. When I opened it, and it went together like a lego toy, I was skeptical. But it's amazing!! It's never going to be your only vacuum if you have a big house (the wheel base is small, so you'd be doing a lot of walking back & forth), but if you have a little apartment, or want to keep a seperate vacuum upstairs, or in different rooms of your house, this vacuum is perfect for that! It's basically a hand-held vac, that has a detachable stick-handle, vacuum/wheel base, and crevice tool. Unlike the cordless hand-vacs, it doesn't lose power after 30 seconds, because it's electric. The crevice tool works great, and it's as light weight as one of those kids' toy vacuums. Also, when I emptied it (you will have to empty it pretty much every time you use it, but what do you expect?) I was shocked at how much dirt was in it- I'd just vacuumed with my expensive... 5/5 stefany9579 (Olympia, WA United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil SD20000RED Simpli-Stik All-in-One Stick Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I got this vacuum on one of those Black Friday deals, and wasn't expecting much, since it was so cheap, & the box was so light. UPDATE

UPDATE FOR REVIEW BELOW:Okay...fifteen days before the two year warranty was to expire...it quit charging. With a deep breath, I contacted customer service. I was initially told to take it to the nearest service center which was 45 miles away. I said that was too far for me and was transferred to someone else who promptly gave me instructions to send a clip of the power card and the manufacturer sticker on the back of the vac and they would send a replacement. Exactly six days later, FedEx delivered my replacement vac! I am stunned..this kind of warranty back up just is not seen in America. So, the vac lasted two years which is twice as long as my Shark vac lasted and the prouduct warranty was actually honored by the company! Yes, it can be a bother to have to keep that filter clean, but again, it is a great little helper when it comes to keeping the basement family room picked up and for quick pick up throuhout the house. Thank you Dirt Devil for a great product... 5/5 D. Ackley (Easton, PA) - See all my reviews, December 7, 2009

my favorite vacuum cleaner for about 2 yrs now...

bought this on amazon to replace my order one... the older one worked great until.. I broke it.... I slammed it against something hard and it broke completely.. don't ask me why... but that happened and I had to replace it with a new one..CONS-the suction isn't the best...user has to hold the vacuum at a specific angle for the suction to be perfect..-only good for small waste and dust... bigger waste tend to stuck and the user has to dig it out with fingers...PROS-the charge time is very short-does not take any room so for people who care about the interior look - this will look fine and sometimes unnoticeable if you put it right beside a little table or in the corner.-easy grip and easy usage-for students and for people with apts (studios to 1 bedroom) this is a very good vacuum !!!for me Iuse it almost everyday to clean out everyday dust and my dog's fur off the floor, and it's a very good product for what... 4/5 Hyun Jun Kim "Josh Kim" (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, December 28, 2009

    Perfect for what it is

This vacuum is perfect for what it is. I like the fact that the Accucharge won't drain the battery like what happened on my Dustbuster. This does need pretty frequent cleaning to keep up the suction, although that's not difficult at all. The Dirt Devil makes a very loud, high pitched noise, especially if it's not 100% clean, but I can totally live with that. It's been so nice to have this to clean up after our shedding dog and dirt from our kid's feet. The rotating brush does help picking up dirt from our carpet. We use this vacuum almost daily. 4/5 krispin "krispin" (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) loved it initially. now...not so much

i thought this was going to be the perfect solution for the daily dust that accumulates on my hardwood floors. initially, i was impressed. the swiffer seemed to pick up a lot of the dust. however, i was bothered by the plastic "vacuum" part, as it sometimes can scratch the floor if you're not careful. as another member wrote, it would have helpful if they would have put some rubber or something over the plastic vacuum part.as the months passed, i found that the vacuum didn't seem to pick up as much as it used to. i do clean the filter regularly (which is a dusty mess each time you do it), so i don't know what's going on. frankly, the vacuum just isn't strong enough for what i need it to do anymore. i've reverted back to my regular "super-strength" vacuum to get the job done.pros:* lightweight* easy to use* works great for very light jobs* small and easy to storecons:* vacuum not as strong... 2/5 E. Excellent When Used AS INTENDED

I have five cats. This means a lot of cat litter, cat food, and cat hair on the vinyl floor in my utility room. The Swiffer Sweeper Vac is perfect for quickly and easily picking up all of the above. It is light-weight, and does not scratch the floors. No dust pan and brush needed. The flexible sweeping head swivels easily to reach into corners and under cabinets with no problem.Important to keep in mind:In the user manual that comes with the product, it states you MUST charge the battery for a full 24 hours before first use.It states the vac will run for about 10 - 12 minutes on one charge, then need to be charged for 16 hours. It states the Sweeper&Vac operates best if used until fully discharged before charging again. It is intended for dry pick up only, not liquids. The dirt container is small. I just checked, and one 8-oz measuring cup of dry cat litter more than fills it. Better than a broom, but not as good as I'd hoped

I'd like to give 3 and a half stars, but since I don't have the option, I put 3. This product isn't bad - it is a good way to give a quick touch up on our tile floors. It's definitely less work than a broom, but is not quite as effective as I had hoped. We have a fairly large tiled area, and with 3 people (including 1 teenager) and 3 cats, there's a lot of dust, hair and crumbs on the floor. The sweeper did okay with the dust and hair, but the vacuum is only so-so on what it picks up. It would not pick up kitty kibble crumbs, for instance. A whole piece of cereal will not get vacuumed up, while a crushed piece of cereal probably will. The key to this product is to use it often - if the floor gets too dirty, it's too much for this product to handle. But for quick every day maintenance, it beats getting out the broom for sure. 3/5 Digigirl (Sugar Land, TX) - See all my reviews, June 19, 2006

It's Good. One Day One Of These Will Be Perfect.

This cordless vacuum cleaner (I LOVE cordless vacuum cleaners) has a lot of positives to recommend it. It does a great job for quick (dog hair) clean ups. Good suction. Good on the edges and area rugs. Easy to maneuver. Really gets under most furniture without argument or bumps, and even fits between the chair legs (in our house). The battery lasts. Feels substantial. Stores easily and out of the way.A good machine. But the dirt removal is a problem. Like most quick clean vacuums, there is way too much hand-to-gunk contact. But unlike machines that have some version of a cup that you can empty, this machine needs to be folded, lifted and held over the trash bin. And the weight that made the machine feel solid, is now awkward and unbalanced and makes emptying the dirt an aggravation. For some of us, this is a problem, even with our Wheaties.Maybe placing the machine into a plastic grocery bag that's on the floor and then opening the dust bin to empty,... 3/5 M. Great little floor vac

I recently purchased this vac for touchups between regular cleanings, and am very pleased with it. With three cats in the house, our main problem is cat hair. This vac does a wonderful job on the area rugs with the power brush engaged, and on the bare floors with just the suction. I can do the entire downstairs of about 1300 sq. ft. before the charge shows any signs at all of diminishing. There is no bag and it's very easy to empty and clean the dirt catcher. The fact that there is no cord to deal with makes it very convenient. It's more expensive than most vacs of this type but is well worth it, and I would recommend it to anyone. 5/5 J. M. HELPFUL HINT

I enjoy using this vac for quick pickups on hardfloors and even upholstered furniture. We have two dogs who track in from our incomplete landscape and grass planting. Also, I can see using this periodically as a take with in the camper or RV. Being able to leave it in the recharge cradle all the time without damaging the battery is helpful. HINT: I had been just opening the door and emptying the unit into the trashcan. when emptying the canister, remove both filter drums. I found that a great deal of dirt was trapped underneath the filter drum mount. Also, BOTH filter drums are easy to remove are totally washable. the inner filter drum takes a while to dry but is durable for washing in a sink of warm soapy water. 5/5 TNFlower "TNFlower" - See all my reviews This review is from: Black & Decker PSV1800 18-Volt Cordless Pivoting Floor Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I enjoy using this vac for quick pickups on hardfloors and even upholstered furniture. Great suction power but my ear is ringing!!

I purchased this 12 amp Dirt Devil after my 6 amp Eureka broke from 3 years of weekly use. I was very happy with my original 6 amps of power. However, I decided it was time to double up since I live with two cats that constantly shed. The DD does a great job at picking up furballs, sand, dirt, crumbs, small pebbles and many more from my hardwood and tile floors. Besides a great suction power, the DD is also light weight and stands up on its own. However, there are many drawbacks:1) Too LOUD!! I wear ear plugs every time I use this machine (seriously!!). We already know it has 12 amps of power... we don't need to hear it!2) The handle is too short. I am 5 feet 6 inches and I honestly feel that the handle is about 2-3 inches too short. I constantly find myself bending my back while using this machine.3) The vaccum head does not swivel. I loved the fact that my old Eureka had the ability to swivel. It definitely made vaccuming easier. 4) Air shoots out of the side... 2/5 LazyCats "LazyCats" (Muttontown, NY) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Woohoo Power!

I live in a dorm room, therefore I have very thin carpet in a very small living space. Nonetheless, I would still like it to be clean. So, I came to dilemma of whether to buy a full size vacuum or go for something smaller. My family has always bought Dirt Devils - from a full size vacuum down to the small handheld Scorpion, and we've always had excellent results. Great power, long life, sturdy, etc. So, in my quest for the perfect vacuum, I found the Power Stick. What caught my eye was the specified use for dorm rooms. I figured the price was right, free shipping, and ordered it right away. Dang is this vacuum powerful! It's as powerful as a full-size vac, yet only half the size and weight. Granted it is really loud, but I don't mind that as it takes no time whatsoever to get hte vacuuming done. I got my entire room done in less than a minute, but my floor is extremely clean. I couldn't believe how much it picked up! There's a huge mouse-sized hair ball in the cup, and I didn't... 5/5 Empyreal (LA, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil Power Stick Bagless Vacuum Cleaner, 10 Amps, M084100RED (Kitchen) I live in a dorm room, therefore I have very thin carpet in a very small living space. Sucks so hard it's scary

I bought this unit because it had a "reasonable" 12 amp motor. I figured it would actually pick up dirt even without a beater bar. I was right more than I ever expected, in fact thats my only complaint. It is so powerful, that the outbound air often hits your legs with a high velocity blast of warm air and bounces around your work area moving the dirt and dust devils around. Other than that it is great. Light, extremly powerful, and easy to maneuver into corners. Be aware however, the motor is so powerfull that ocasionally you will feel like you have a bucking bronco in hand when you turn it on.Summary Pro and Con.Pro:1. Extremly powerful2. Light3. Easy to maneuver.4. Easy to store using a hook on the wall5. No bags to buy6. Outstanding priceCon:1. Startling when started (trys to twist out of your hand)2. Loud3. Small dirt holder4. Great Little Machine

Bottom line ... this is a great little machine that does the work it's meant to do. I used this machine for a solid 45 minutes while vacuuming two entire floors of my home - including stairs - one of the best parts was that this machine did not over-heat as with other 'bagless' vacuums I've purchased in the recent past (which were put out into the garbage!).I could see that the vacuum was performing from the dust and debris that was entering the dirt cup. My home has all hardwood floors with a "mud" throw at the various entrances. The vacuum works great on hardwood surfaces and also did a nice job on the thin non-slip entrance rugs. Assmebly was a snap ... literally. The vacuum is VERY lightweight which is a big plus in preventing scratches on hardwood. This vacuum also has a very quiet motor - you can actually hear the phone and/or doorbell while you're running the vacuum!Although I'm happy with my purchase and believe this is a great little machine, I... 5/5 Pleased Repeat Customer (New Jersey) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Not good enough

I bought this to clean cat litter off of carpet squares and bare floor tile. At first, it did what I bought it for, but just barely. After about two weeks, it began to act like it was full even though it wasn't and would leave a pile of cat litter when shut off. Maybe the filter was clogged, but it looked fine me. 1/5 S. Don't throw away your $$!

It may seem that this vacuum cleaner costs less than others but it's definitely not worth it, even as a children's vacuum. It is very noisy for its size, and you'll have a lot of trouble cleaning the filter - all of the dirt gets on the filter and one has to breathe a lot of dust after opening the cleaner.I could go on with disadvantages until tomorrow, but instead, take more $$ and get yourself a decent vacuum! 1/5 Alex (Canada) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil Swift Stick (Kitchen) It may seem that this vacuum cleaner costs less than others but it's definitely not worth it, even as a children's vacuum. Extremely dissatisfied

After reading the other 5 star reviews I ordered this item. I wanted to replace my Shark cordless sweeper that was wearing out. The Dirt Devil was more flimsy than the Shark. It didn't pick up as well. The entire top of the sweeper was covered with dust after I used it; this never happened with the Shark. It was hard to turn on and off with my foot compared to the Shark. The final problem occurred after I had used it for less than a week and the left wheel broke off. I returned it for a refund.Although my experience with this product was disappointing, as always, my experience with Amazon was completely satisfactory. They have a return policy with no questions asked and send you a return mailing label. I find myself buying more and more from Amazon because of their superior customer service. 1/5 Hollida Wakefield Underwager "Hollida Wakefield" (Northfield, MN USA) - See all my reviews, January 9, 2010

    Great Little Sweeper

This model Dirt Devil is a great little sweeper; it fits under chairs and other furniture; and it is lightweight and quiet. It runs quite a while on a single charge. 5/5 D. Danko - See all my reviews, June 26, 2009

We will never go back to regular sweeping! Great for the elderly.

I bought this for my elderly mom to help out with basic cleanup since the vacuum is too heavy for her, and she can't bend her back very well to do regular sweeping. To her, this sweeper is a god-send. It picks up everything rather well from carpets and the bare kitchen floor. It is super light and maneuvers around very easily. Also, Amazon's price is half of what we saw at the store!Awesome sweeper for fast cleanup between vacuumings. 5/5 SpunkyBunks (Rio Rancho, NM USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Dirt Devil Battery Quality

I have had two of these 14.4 volt cordless / bagless Dirt Devil Stick vacuums..The battery will last about 6 months before it starts failing and at about 9 monthsit will only vacuum for about two minutes before the power falls to about 50% of full charge..I charge for 24hrs between daily use...I sent my first machine back to Dirt Devil for replacement after about 10 months of use and they sent me a new machine which has exactly the same poor battery life as the first machine..The machine is also easily plugged up by anything larger / more coarse than dog hair & dirt...Anything larger thana sunflower seed will plug it up... 1/5 Billy Gene Strong - See all my reviews, December 26, 2009

    Worthless

I'm amazed every time I see a good review for this vacuum. I may have just gotten a bad one, but I highly doubt it. It has NO power or suction at all. I would go over the same piece of dirt over and over again and it couldn't pick it up. It takes forever to charge then it doesn't hold that charge for more than 5 minutes. I only used mine five times before I died completely. I didn't even use it for anything heavy duty. Light dirt on a small tile kitchen; no carpet, not 2000 square feet, etc. I wish I had saved my money for something better. Please do not waste your money. 1/5 kjh123 (United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil BD20040RED Extreme Power 14.4 Volt Stick Vac (Kitchen) I'm amazed every time I see a good review for this vacuum. Best Cordless Stick Vac EVER

We have now gone through 2 of these vacs in 5 years. They are the best. Not only is this vac one of the lowest priced stick vacs on the market today, but it out performs every stick vac except possibly the Hoover Platinum which is $179 at Target. Recently our 2nd one died and I have been searching and searching for a replacement. I have bought 5 other stick vacs, a few with the 2 in 1 dustbuster type and they all stink. They cost more and dont pick up nearly as much as this dirt devil. This one also is very convenient to store and charge as it sits in a little charging module. It just sits in it. You dont have to line up some hook type thing like many of the other vacs. So you just pick it up and to replace just drop it down. So Easy so awesome! I cant find any in any of the stores around me, target, walmart, homedepot, sears... But hurray, you can find it online. We actually just purchased the upgraded model...15.6V and cant wait to get it!
