Carter Beats the Devil

Creator: Glen David Gold | Fiction - 2002-09-18

A powerful and richly textured novel set in 1920 follows Charles Carter, a.k.a.

Publisher: Hyperion

About this book
he response to Glen David Gold's debut novel, Carter Beats the Devil was extraordinary. He hypnotized us with his portrait of a 1920s magic-obsessed America and of Charles Carter-a.k.a. Carter the Great-a young master performer whose skill as an illusionist exceeded even that of the great Houdini. Filled with historical references that evoke the excesses and exuberance of Roaring Twenties pre-Depression America, Carter Beats the Devil is a complex and illuminating story of one man's journey through a magical and sometimes dangerous world, where illusion is everything.

    Why buy anything else?

All right...here's the skinny. Two weeks ago I ordered a Dyson "Animal" handheld from Amazon after agonizing about which handheld to buy. I need something for my carpeted steps. My little Kone handheld wasn't doing the job, and my big Dyson is too bulky to maneuver up and down the steps. The Dyson handheld pulled up that cat hair like whoa. But the Dyson has this stupid, stupid design feature, which is that there's no on/off switch. Instead it has a trigger-like thing, which you have to keep held down in order to keep the vacuum powered on. If you let go then it shuts off. Trying to maneuver that heavy handheld around the steps without letting go of the trigger was near impossible. I emailed Dyson about it (surely there must have been a trigger lock somewhere?) but when they failed to answer I sent it back to Amazon and ordered this Dirt Devil. The Dirt Devil does just as good a job as the Dyson, AND it has a proper on/off switch. The cord is... 5/5 Delamaine "Formerly Belacane" (Seattle Eastside) - See all my reviews, February 7, 2009

    Good Suction, Small Dirt Cup

I like the suction on this little handheld vacuum cleaner. It really picks up.What I don't like about it, however, is the very small dirt cup. I have a large dog, and I have to empty the cup every 4th or 5th step when he's shedding heavily. It also gets very hot, and doesn't really get into the corner of the stair. I've tried the attachments, but could not get them to work well with the lack of instructions that came with it.All in all, it's a good handheld, but it's not perfect. 3/5 Brenda "Mother of 2" (New York) - See all my reviews This review is from: Royal Appliance M0105 Dirt Devil Purpose For Pets Hand Vac (Kitchen) I like the suction on this little handheld vacuum cleaner. Great for picking up Pugs shedding!

When I first looked for this on Amazon, it was not available, so I bought it somewhere else. I love it. I have 3 vacuum cleaners but nothing would really get all the pets hair off my dark carpet and sofa. The Purpose for Pets worked like magic. After taking it out of the box, my capet and sofa were clean in 10 minutes. 5/5 shirlan "Shirley Diederich" (Dayton,Ohio) - See all my reviews, May 21, 2008

I have not used this item for a long time yet but as of this moment I am very happy with its performance. It is a vacuum filter, so how excited can I get. The fact that it is washable and reusable makes me give it five stars. Now only time will tell if it was worth it. This could be a good value and cost savings because Hepa filters tend to be pricey. 5/5 Joseph J. Dibiase - See all my reviews, April 25, 2010

Fits perfectly on Dirt Devil, F27 filter replacement

Very pleased with this product. Shipped quickly, included foam pre-filter and it dropped right into the vacuum just like the original filter. Our vac says "F27" right on the back, so you can probably confirm this is the right one for you by looking for F27 on the back of the handle. I'd suggest saving your old foam pre-filter. Having an extra one allows you to soak and clean one pre-filter while you are using the other, giving time for the one being cleaned to dry. 5/5 Bob H - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Still a great hand vac!

I bought a Dirt Devil hand vac in the early 1980's because the carpet salesman where I bought my new carpet told me it would be far superior for use on stairs than the attachment that came with my upright (Rainbow) vacuum cleaner. He was right and I also loved that hand vac for cleaning my upholstered furniture. I bought a Dyson Animal vacuum cleaner last year and I wish I could say that the upholstery attachment sucks, but it doesn't, and it is hard to put on and take off of the hose. I like the Dyson for my carpets but am not at all impressed with their attachments. So, today I bought this Dirt Devil Classic and it is great! I read the reviews here and others were complaining about some of the other models. This hand vac has a belt and the belt can be replaced. The owner of the vac shop told me the difference between the models that are receiving the complaints here and the Classic 0100 that I bought today is that the others are air driven and mine is belt driven and that's... 4/5 Joanne Reynolds "Joanne" (Mansfield, Texas) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil 100 Classic 7 Amp Bagless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I bought a Dirt Devil hand vac in the early 1980's because the carpet salesman where I bought my new carpet told me it would be far superior for use on stairs than the attachment that came with my upright (Rainbow) vacuum cleaner. Much better than the old model!

I purchased this vacuum ($40+tax at Best Buy) to replace my old red Dirt Devil with the bag and onboard tools. The tools on my old one were constantly falling off while I was vacuuming. This new model is a HUGE improvement! The suction is amazing! I used it on our carpeted stairs that I just had steam cleaned last week and was surprised at all the junk it sucked up. The clear dirt cup is much better than the disposable bags and emptying it is a breeze. I like how the tools attach and the crevice tool seemed to work well. The cord is long enough to vacuum the entire stairway and then some. I would recommend this vaccum to anyone who is tired of lugging their upright up and down the stairs! 5/5 K. I thought I liked it, but then...

I started out liking this machine, despite being not so fond of our former Dirt Devil "screamer" with the ridiculous belt changing routine. The problems with this machine are: try cleaning the pleated filter (good luck!) and the exhaust blowing out the sides and then slightly downward blows around what you're trying to vacuum up. I am really surprised no one else has mentioned these two issues (except for one person who mentioned the filter). After just one use, I had to knock the pleated filter against the trash can to loosen and remove the dirt--no go. So what are the options? Leave the dirt in there to continually clog it, and then be forced to go buy a new one for $5.99? I honestly think this was the goal of Dirt Devil, just to make an extra buck. And if you're trying to vacuum up pet hair, and anything light weight, watch it blow around from the exhaust as you go chasing it with the vacuum (utterly futile). It's on the loud side too. It IS powerful, but in the wrong... 2/5 luvmypets "mattie" (Northern Ohio) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil 100 Classic 7 Amp Bagless Handheld Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I started out liking this machine, despite being not so fond of our former Dirt Devil "screamer" with the ridiculous belt changing routine. A solid 4 stars, good for the money!

Overall I like this vac for the price. It is not comparable to it $200 counterparts, but for the $69 I paid for it, it was well worth the money. I think this vac is comparable to vacs in the $80 or less range.PROS: I have a bad back so I love that it is so light and easy to move. Empting it is so easy, just press one little button and your done. I also like how they separated the filter area from the dust area so you don't have to shake out the filter each time you use it. It works great for places like the bathroom where there are bath mats; it goes right onto them without sucking up the corners or chewing up the rug. It is low profile so it goes under furniture and around items very easy. The cord retractor works great, I have never used a cord retractor that actually works all the way to the end, but this one does!Cons: The vacuum head is a little cheap; it feels flimsy and has a hard time on carpet. The spinning head is moved by the suction, not by the motor, so... 4/5 Nicola Havens "Nicola Havens" (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2005

    Don't Buy It !

I bought this vacum at Target nearly six months ago. It has a very strong suction, and runs relatively quiet, but it cost a fortune to maintain! The root cause for this maintainence is that Dirt Devil designed this machine to use the Hepa filter as a vacum bag. All the dirt raps itself around the filter until its completely crapped up, and if you use it beyond that stage it will completely shut-down. I call customer service about it, and they recommended that I clean the filter more frequently. Which I now do, but I still have to replace the filter on average once every 2 months or else I'm force to breath all the fine particles that the Hepa is suppose to protect me from. The cost of each filter is an appauling $30 bucks. My car filter doesn't cost more than $7 dollars. At this rate I've already bought the vacum cleaner within my six months of use. Save yourself the hassel. Don't buy it! 1/5 Prof2U "Septimus" (Paterson, NJ) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil 082660 Vision Canister Vacuum (Kitchen) I bought this vacum at Target nearly six months ago. Great for the price, great for floors.

I just bought this vacuum a few days ago, but I am really fond of it. My entire house is vinyl tile except for a few throw rugs. Uprights have never been good for me, since the rotating brushes tend to throw dust around on a bare floor. This Dirt Devil comes with two different heads: one for bare floors, and one for carpet -- with a rotating brush that is powered by suction instead of a motor.I vacuumed my entire house with the bare floor head and it worked great! This vacuum is quieter than I expected for a sub-$100 unit, and had more suction than I expected.Emptying the reservoir is simple... a touch of a button! I have terrible dust allergies, so I can honestly tell you that the HEPA filtration seems to work perfectly on this little vacuum. You can store the vacuum sitting down or on it's end. It takes up very little room in my closet. The only complaint I have is that the cord isn't as long as I would like... only 15 feet... 4/5 J. Powerful, Noisy, Awkward

I got this vac for cleaning up a small space, just a room, and did not need a whole upright thing.I can say that this unit must have a very powerful motor- when you turn it on, it sounds like a Corvette at 6000 rpm and there does not seem to be anything built into the product to lessen this clamor. The unfortunate thing is that all this power as you would think from the sound(s) that it makes does not seem to translate into a lot of suction power. But the brush is very powerful and distinguishis this product from other "Dustbuster" type hand vacs.As a handheld vaccum, I do find its brush powerful to get things like cookie crumbs and whatnot out of a cheap synthetic carpet but beware, it is really loud. Well, one other good thing is that the bags are easily available.Probably you can find another handheld vac that is quieter but beware that some "Dustbuster" - style vacs do not have a sweeping powerful brush, they just inhale loose debris. So consider it... 4/5 Twain - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil Ultra Power Handheld Vacuum (Kitchen) I got this vac for cleaning up a small space, just a room, and did not need a whole upright thing.I can say that this unit must have a very powerful motor- when you turn it on, it sounds like a Corvette at 6000 rpm and there does not seem to be anything built into the product to lessen this clamor. The unfortunate thing is that all this power as you would think from the sound(s) that it makes does not seem to translate into a lot of suction power. "Ultra power".....haha, that's a joke.

If only we had went online and look at these reviews before buying this little monster, we would ALL be a happier family. Not only is this thing LOUD, it SHRIEKS. I've gotten headaches from using this thing. And the suction power doesn't make up for it at all. I've had to pick up some pretty obvious dirt bits, while it just glides over/pushes it around. The hot air being blown in your face is also extremely unpleasent. Try being in a car in the middle of June with a furnace blowing in your face. The only thing you'll be happy with is the nice definition in your arm after having to carry this thing around. It's a work-out and a chore at the same time! The cord is also a complete hassle to roll up. So much so, we just throw it in the closet in a bundle. Loud, Heavy & Bulky -- not a good car vac

This vacuum proved too loud, heavy and bulky. I almost never used the Devil as a normal handheld vac, instead opting to attach and use the included hose when cleaning carpet debris in my car. However, the hose is not long enough to comfortably vacuum your car without either holding the vacuum in one hand and vacuuming with the other, or placing the vacuum down inside your car as you vacuum (excruciatingly loud, and it seemed to effectively swirl/spew dust around my already dirty car interior -- disqualification, on both counts.) Running the unit for 20 minutes or so caused it to get very hot around the motor, and occasionally you could smell rubber. Also, the intake seemed to get clogged fairly easily when there was a lot of debris like cat hair, carpet fibers or string. All in all, not a desirable unit to own... A GREAT bagless vacuum, but be aware of what you are buying

DISCUSSION:We have a larger house and so prefer to have 2 vacuums for different areas (carpet vs tile floors). For example there is no power brush on the floor attachment of this vacuum so it works best on smooth surfaces such as wood or tile floors. My petite wife Really likes it because it is light weight and easy to maneuver which is a big plus. After all we men sometimes forget who it is that normally performs the vacuuming in a house. As the man of the house I have volunteered to clean the vacuum when necessary so have lots of experience with that part of it. Cleaning is a little messy but no big deal. If you prefer not having the convenience of a vacuum that uses a replaceable bag then REGULAR CLEANING IS REQUIRED. We have had this vacuum for just over a year and it has given us no problems at all. All the attachments including the hose are very sturdy and obviously designed to last. Its used weekly.I would like to offer my compliments to the... 4/5 Grigori Efimovich Rasputin "The Mad Monk" (St Petersburg, Russia) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil SD40010 EZ Lite Bagless Canister (Kitchen) DISCUSSION:We have a larger house and so prefer to have 2 vacuums for different areas (carpet vs tile floors). IMPORTANT INFO regarding CLOGS

I've owned this vac for about 2 months and began experiencing loss of suction and poor performance. I was literally at wit's end and ready to throw the thing out the window. I bought new filters and still the same problems. I read the instruction manual over and over, looking for some reason. Here's the deal that the instruction manual DOESN'T mention: there is a pre-filter inside the plastic "bagless" collector part you pull out and empty (NOT related to the grey sponge or the HEPA filter). Open the bottom of the dirt/dust collector. Empty the contents and look up inside. There is a black cylinder inside a clear cylindrical receiver. I hold the bagless collector in my left hand so when I turn it upside down, the assembly is on the right. You can't miss it, although I did for 2 months. That is where all the hair and other light-weight junk builds up!!! Give the black cylinder a counter-clockwise twist, pull it out, and clean. I literally pulled out about a packed 8-ounce... 4/5 Anthony C. Slay "I Be Shoppin'" (Charlotte, NC) - See all my reviews, May 6, 2011

Wish I could give ZERO STARS

This vac was impressive out of the box. the suction was amazing... for a week. You quickly will discover that his vac takes an enormous amount of TLC. If you have a woman in the house with longish hair, or pets, it will clog up immediately. You have to use your fingers or a tool to pull out the debris EVERY time you vacuum. The filter pad has direct contact with debris, so it need to be replaced or washed every few vacuums. WE VACUUM EVERY DAY.. not carpet.. hard wood floors.. and this vac lasted a month before it completely died, despite all our extra care of unclogging, etc.I'm not sure what it is supposed to vacuum up. It can't handle hair.. it chokes on anything bigger than a cheerio.Miserable, awful product. Went into the garbage today.I suspect it has probably already been discontinued.PLEASE don't waste your money. 1/5 Twinsboystwice (House of Clone) - See all my reviews, January 2, 2010
