About this book
What makes a product successful?   How it looks? The way it functions? Its ease of use? Or do factors like price and marketing dominate?   In a quest to find answers to these questions, Deconstructing Product Design engages readers in a process of critically analyzing a diverse collection of 100 innovative products, from well-known classics to contemporary objects of desire. The goal is to support critical thinking about design, facilitate discovery of patterns of success (and failure) across products, and enable readers to apply lessons learned to their own design work. Experts from multiples design disciplines contribute commentary, including: Robert Blaich, industrial design; Jill Butler, graphic design; Alan Cooper, technology design; Brock Danner, architecture; Kimberly Elam, graphic design; Donald Emmite, design history; Larimie Garcia, graphic arts; Scott Henderson, product design; Kritina Holden, human factors; Robert Kingslyn, graphic design; Jon Kolko, interaction design; Lyle Sandler, experience design; Rob Tannen, human factors; Dori Tunstall, Design Anthropology, Steven Umbach, Product Design; Paula Wellings, interaction design. yeah, it's an Animal...for dirt and doghair!

Ok, I'm biased because I love animals but this Animal is fabulous! We have two dogs (one shorthaired and one double-coated) and live in a mountainous rural area: can you say doghair, dirt, and firewood chips? Since I was always switching to the old upright's hose to clean under cabinets, dog beds, steps, corner cobwebs, I started thinking a canister vac might save alot of time after my husband broke the not-so-old upright. This DC39 Animal (the purple one) does *ALL* the jobs of the non-Dyson upright far faster and better, and it doesn't fall on me while using the hose like the old upright did. It's soooo light to move around rather than the heavy upright that I used to have to pick up to carefully vacuum all the fringed rugs we have (I inherited them; if YOU have a choice, buy non-fringed rugs!) and, with the Animal, I just push the button to turn off the brushhead and run the turbine head right over that fringe. Oh, and picks up an amazing amount of dirt along with the... 5/5 mtnfever - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Love It!

I've had two Dyson uprights, the first wonderful, the second not so great. The little carpet height sensor got very worn down and scratched my wood floor in addition to the hose breaking. I decided to give Dyson another go and ordered this vac. I have 2 kids,, 3 dogs, and a cat (I often feel like it is Noah's arc). The item was well packaged and very easy to set up. It did wonderfully on my wood floors and my area rug looked like it had been shampooed when I finished. I love that it's smaller than an upright and can get in between and under the furniture. I also purchased the hard floor attachment, but honestly, wish I hadn't. It is fine to use it after the bulk of the dog hair is up, but I found that the massive dog hair tumble weeds got stuck around the edges and the included turbine head was simply more effective. It's very easy to maneuver, and I found myself forgetting that I was pulling a canister behind me. It got up all the dog hair and even did a really great job... 5/5 Ozzy's Wife "A" (NC) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fabulous Vacuum

I have been using the DC39 Animal for 2.5 weeks now on carpet (short dense pile and Berber and very short pile throw rugs) and tile with two indoor/outdoor cats shedding in spring in an ultra-dry environment (lots of static). It is amazingly quiet and light, super maneuverable, and very effective. I have used a number of Kenmore Canister vacuums throughout my adult life. I was initially disappointed with the narrow width of the head, but have since grown to appreciate how many more places it can fit. It is very easy to empty and keep clean. I empty it into my garage trash can while outside to avoid reapplying dust inside. It stores in a relatively small space compared to other older style canister vacuums. The small rotating-brush head works wonderfully on upholstered furniture. The combo dusting brush/crevice tool is space saving and effective. Sometimes I miss having a light on the large rotating-brush head, but, the design is far superior to a powered head and an acceptable... 5/5 A. Frustration Free Vacuuming

I know this will be long, so I will present this in pro's & con's, a summary of my background a little, a summery of my experiences, and then a more detailed follow up on some of those pro's/con's.All in all, my wife and I are really happy with it. It's only been the first week, so time will tell. Some of the pro's and con's might appear to be double listed, as some are a plus and a minus.PRO'S* Sucks - pulls dirt out of somewhere where my last vacuum couldn't find it.* a bit quieter than any vacuum I have had...lower pitch as well. My wife and I can actually talk at reasonable levels when the vacuum is running.* Vacuum head self adjust to floor, so no bending down to turn the @!#$ switch on most vacuums.* Attachments lock into place, so they don't come off when using them* Dirt canister removes as one unit (no dirt on the floor), dumps out of bottom over a trash can - some dust may come up, but small*... 5/5 N. Most Amazing Vacuum Ever!!!!

Customer Video Review Length:: 7:35 MinsI never thought I'd ever buy such an expensive Vacuum, but after going through so many cheap ones, I decided to take the challenge. I bought it, and tried it after I used my old vacuum. I was shocked at how much my old one left behind. This is a good all around vacuum, it never loses suction, its easy to remove the debris, has a hose that extends quite far, and just works well. I love the power cord, its super long, and I can do my whole house by only changing plugs once. It's the little things that make life so much easier. It's just a great vacuum, love it love it love it. The only downside is you have to give it a big push to lock it in place, there is no foot lever to get it in vacuum mode, you just push it down, but I have to tell you, this is a great investment, and it has a 5 year warranty, so I'm happy with my purchase. Great, but has design flaws.

The DC41 is a great product and is probably the best vacuum out there. But that hasn't stopped me from noticing a few defects. There are really 2 major ones that nearly made me return this product. The first issue is that they got rid of the foot lever that typical vacuums have to engage the beater bar. Instead you just force it down and start vacuuming and when you are done you just put it back up and it latches and stays upright. This is pretty neat but when you are putting it upright there are 2 distinct things that happen, it engages the wand hose and then it engages the lock that holds it up. The switch for the hose is much louder and happens first so this leads you to believe the vacuum is upright and to let go when it is not latched properly causing it to fall over if you are not quick enough to catch it. This makes me respond by putting it upright much more forcefully then I want to do to something I've bought for nearly $600.The second main issue is the path the... 4/5 JonoPorter - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC41 Animal Bagless Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) The DC41 is a great product and is probably the best vacuum out there. Save yourself a ton of money, buy this refurbished Dyson instead of a new one!

I had been mulling the purchase of a Dyson for some time since two neighbors and my wife's parents all purchased the base model. While there apparently aren't many features that make this Animal version much different, I went ahead with this model anyway. I can tell you that you will want the brush tool for stairs as is actually raises the carpet back up just like the main roller does. I haven't used the flat-out tool yet but other things like the selectable carpet length buttons and long cord were both worth the upgrade. As for this model being refurbished, unless you were buying this as a gift and don't want to look cheap, I would recommend anyone look at this option before dishing out the full purchase price. The unit arrived in a plain cardboard box with all the accessories as a new model and I could not see anything that would indicate that it was previously used. The factory cleans every nook, replaces the filters, and I believe even replaces the cord and accessories as... 5/5 AJBeastro - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Vacuum!

I love everything about this vacuum. It has great suction, it glides easily, (I barely have to push it forward!) It's easy to use the hose, and it's super easy to clean. My dog sheds a lot and I am amazed at the amount of hair and debris this vacuum picked up--Right after using my old vacuum (different brand) on the same spots first! This is a refurb but it looks/performs brand new and I'm extremely happy!! 5/5 Mike - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Finally

Finally found the vaccuum that takes care of all the pet hair and debris that comes with owning 3 cats and 2 dogs. Powerful and efficient and so easy to use. All other vaccuums continuously clogged up in the long hoses even when emptying frequently, but not so with this one. Buying a refurbished saved me tons of money and when it arrived, on time and in good condition, I would not have known that it wasn't brand new. Outstanding!

This thing is amazing!I have wanted a Dyson ever since they first came out, but when I went to a store to look at them, it was so heavy I would need one for each level of my house and not enough closet space to store them. This is under 12 pounds, fits easily in a closet, and is so light it's very easy to carry up stairs. I'll admit I'm not a fan of cleaning but being a female engineer I certainly appreciate well-designed products. This one has many clever features. The cleaning head is low-profile, so it easily hugs floor boards under kitchen cabinets (huge plus!). The ball design is incredibly inventive and so easy to use. It's like the difference hauling a suitcase around that has weels that go in only one direction vs. the new ones with pivot wheels - makes SO much sense and doesn't hurt my back to use it.Cleaning power is great! It isn't especially labelled for pet hair cleanup, but does a great job. I cleaned once with my old vaccuum,... 5/5 K. Christensen "Bought a Dyson" (Colorado) - See all my reviews, May 10, 2008

We were going to buy the DC07, but decided the DC25 was worth the upgrade....boy, were we right!!!The main clencher is the ease of using the attachment tools, with the DC25, you just extend the telescoping pole, and, voila! you're ready to go!{the DC07 requires plugging/unplugging to use the attachment tools} I found myself attacking every corner and groove with specks of dirt/cobwebs in it (LOVE this thing for cleaning the ac intake grates and the fins of our air filters!)...most of them without ever having to bend over.Of course there is the fantastic suction, but then, you expect that from Dyson's reputation...it was disgusting what it got out of our carpet (we have no pets, no kids, and don't wear shoes in the house; I vacuum very regularly, anyways) the first time.If you don't think you'll use the attachment/tools much, the cheaper models might work for you, but if you appreciate being able to easily attack the tiny corners and grooves no upright can fit into,... 5/5 A H (Washington) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) We were going to buy the DC07, but decided the DC25 was worth the upgrade....boy, were we right!!!The main clencher is the ease of using the attachment tools, with the DC25, you just extend the telescoping pole, and, voila! you're ready to go!{the DC07 requires plugging/unplugging to use the attachment tools} I found myself attacking every corner and groove with specks of dirt/cobwebs in it (LOVE this thing for cleaning the ac intake grates and the fins of our air filters!)...most of them without ever having to bend over.Of course there is the fantastic suction, but then, you expect that from Dyson's reputation...it was disgusting what it got out of our carpet (we have no pets, no kids, and don't wear shoes in the house; I vacuum very regularly, anyways) the first time.If you don't think you'll use the attachment/tools much, the cheaper models might work for you, but if you appreciate being able to easily attack the tiny corners and grooves no upright can fit into,... Worth every penny...

I was skeptical about Dyson vacs in general because of the price, but I have to say this is probably one of the best purchases I've ever made for several reasons. The main reasin is that I have nerve damage and less than normal cartilage in my lower vertebrae, which made vacuuming very painful and laborous. On top of that, I have two dogs so I vacuum all the time. This vacuum is literally a miracle for me. It is so lightweight and so easy to maneuver that I don't have any pain after doing the whole house. That is really saying something, since things as small as leaning over for 10 minutes to wash the dishes causes me pain. It practically glides effortlessly across my floors (which are half carpet and half hardwood). Seriously, I almost cried tears of joy the first time I used it.In addition, it works spectacular, and just snapped together out of the box. The first time you use it you'll see that so much thought went into the design specifcially for functionality. It's... 5/5 J. Miller (sunnyvale, ca United States) - See all my reviews, May 12, 2008

DC 24, lightweight delight comes up short with its hose

I bought the DC 24 to replace a small vacuum and was my first Dyson purchase (though I have used them regularly in the past). I would not recommend this vacuum to replace a dedicated large upright. Dyson uses "airwatts" to specify the power of the vacuums and the DC 24 has 115 airwatts vs. 220 airwatts for the DC 25 and DC 15. Not knowing how many airwatts other vacuums use, I can only guess similar comparisons to other brands.=================What to Like=================The DC 24 vacuum is lightweight 11.5lbs (DC25 16.1lbs and DC15 19.95lbs) and can go up and down stairs without problems (3 story condo). In fact, instead of using the hose attachment for the stairs I prefer to use the vacuum itself. It has a nicely placed handle in the front for this function (like a weed trimmer). You have to hold it out away from your body, as the brushes don't spin if the unit is placed upright.Despite being lightweight and lower power, it has consistent... 4/5 Winter "Tech Connoisseur" (Northern VA, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC24 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I bought the DC 24 to replace a small vacuum and was my first Dyson purchase (though I have used them regularly in the past). Light, Compact, Expensive

I had a very hard time choosing between the DC18 (slim model) vs the brand new DC24 (ball model). When it came down to it, my girlfriend liked the compact size and light weight of the DC24 due to that fact we live in a fairly small apartment. Both machines are about the same price in most stores, and I personally felt that the DC18 would be a better deal. However, after playing with both models the weight and size of the machines was very noticeable. This machine (DC24) is a breeze to use and sucks well. It seems a little weaker than other models, but it gets the job done in our apartment with carpet, wood floors, and pseudo-tile. I was skeptical but I'm glad I made the purchase.Pros:- Easy to carry- Convenient storage, aesthetically pleasing- Powerful enough to keep us clean- Ball 'gimmick' actually is usefulNegs:- Electric cord could be longer- Vacuum sucking power not as strong as other models... 5/5 Donald 'Donnie' Demuth (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC24 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I had a very hard time choosing between the DC18 (slim model) vs the brand new DC24 (ball model). Small than I thought!

When I discovered this model, I did the research; Dyson's web site, this one, and other sellars. I found little information on it, but I had a Dyson DC15 "ball" vacuum in the past and decided to order it. I couldn't make up my mind between this one and the larger DC25. Other than measurements, the only difference that I could find anywhere, was that this model's handle retracted for easier storage. Guess what, this thing is as small as the DC18, only this model as the ball. Other than the size, it's a great vacuum and typical Dyson. It works great, suction is fantastic. It's perfect for an apartment or someone who wishes a lightweight easy-to-use vacuum. The hose system leaves something to be desired. It is cumbersome and somewhat difficult to utilize. One has to pull out the handle, reverse it, and attach the short hose to it. It's not as simple as the other models. Also, the cord is short and it the only accessory that comes with it is the brush. No extension... 4/5 D. W. Rose (Central, TX USA) - See all my reviews, April 10, 2008

The Dyson sphere: science fiction comes to life

I live in a basement studio with two dogs and a muddy yard, and this is the perfect vacuum cleaner for me. How many times has this floor really needed a quick vacuuming, but I just didn't feel like hauling my gigantic machine out and then manhandling it around the narrow spaces? Then spending half an hour dismantling it every time it sucked up a stray cable of yarn from the carpet? Now I find myself pulling out the Dyson just to get the dust bunnies or caked mud out of one corner! It weighs about nine pounds, it fits in all my narrow spaces without having to move the furniture, the sphere turns on a dime, and it can suck the rust off of an abandoned Studebaker. The attachments click on simply and securely. The roller has a sensor that stops it from turning the moment it detects it slowing down because something is caught in the brush, so it doesn't wind around fifty times. The bucket is easy to clean. It's even light for carrying up stairs, and the stairway attachment is so... 5/5 Gene Fellner "R.I.P. Sandy Denny" (from out in the redwood forest) - See all my reviews, April 23, 2011

I thought I ordered the Dyson Ball DC25 Animal.......

Well I have the first Dyson Animal and it is a large vacuum. When I took this one out of the box, to my surprise, it was really small! I purchased this one on accident instead of the full sized DC25. Although it is small it has the same suction power as the bigger model DC 25 (my mom owns the DC 25 and I used it while visiting her). The only downfall for me is the smaller canister size as I will have to empty it more often. I have an RV and this vacuum will be the perfect size to bring along on a trip! It works fabulous, it's small and light weight, and it's purple....you can't help but love it! I am disabled and the lightweight factor is a plus along with the ease of moving it around due to the ball. I highly recommend this vacuum! 5/5 Mary Sanchez "lexussky71" (N.Y. Powerful & Pint Size!

I read many reviews & spent weeks researching the model Dyson that I would decide to purchase to replace my DC07 All-Floors. I knew that I wanted a ball & an animal version of Dyson because I have 2 dogs, a cat & O.C.D. I vacuum at least once a day & have adored my DC07 model for the last 5 years. I have to say that even though the size of the vacuum is surprisingly smaller than my DC07, it clearly states that it is 2/3 the size on the box, so no surprise to me when the cord was a few feet shorter as well. Smaller vacuum - shorter cord. It also clearly states this in a details. But for my large area home, I just use an extension cord for the living rooms. No big deal! I find the bin is more than a suitable size. I have never reached the max line & I have a very large home with mostly carpet & carpeted stairs. It's also easy enough to empty, who cares? And unless you have a filthy house, I see no reason for the smaller bin to be an issue. Just to satisfy my curiosity... 5/5 Krissy (PORTLAND, OREGON, US) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC24 Animal Bagless Vacuum (Kitchen) I read many reviews & spent weeks researching the model Dyson that I would decide to purchase to replace my DC07 All-Floors. The Messiah of Vacuums

This is the best vacuum ever. I have been a proud dyson owner for the past 8 years, my first was a purple DC07 Animal and that vacuum has been a trooper and still works just as good as when I bought it. So why a new vacuum? This one has all the bells and whistles that turn a staunch feminist into Donna Reed. It is that much fun to vacuum.Out of the box, it takes five seconds to snap everything together and you are ready to go. I have no idea what the other reviewer is complaining about regarding the plastic but this is high quality all around. The plastic is smooth and has a matte finish (no scratches!) and is NOT BRITTLE so it won't snap. And nothing on my old dyson ever broke and that one was all plastic too.Once I got going, I never had to stop. I started on the sea grass hallway rug, moved to the wood floor, moved back to the low pile rug in the living room and then into the kitchen. The vacuum is light weight, very easy to maneuver and no switching... 5/5 Sarah Mc Bride (Concord, MA) - See all my reviews, April 24, 2012

Sucks - in a good way

After finally retiring my beloved Hoover Windtunnel canister vacuum - I decided to replace it with this Dyson.Assembly was easy - I gave up with the instructions (pictures only - but not very informative) and had it up and running in about 5 minutes. I vacuumed an area rug with my Hoover first (it still works - but is now held together by duct tape and rubber bands in several areas). After going over it a second time with the Dyson - I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of dust it pulled out of the carpet. There was a couple of pieces of lint (looked like a down feather) that I had to go over several times in order to vacuum it up - but otherwise it did a good job. Going off the area rug onto the hardwood floor was easy - you just push a button in the handle to turn off the brush so the floor doesn't get scratched. The canister is quite light and easy to pull around - and emptying it is a breeze. I would suggest emptying it into a large (outside) garbage can -... 4/5 DurbanGirl (Portland, OR) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC39 Multi floor canister vacuum cleaner (Misc.) One question, 1 comment; What is the decibel level of the DC39 Animal Canister when it is running? In the description of the unit on the Amazon webpage, it talks to trapping "...microscopic particles down to 1/5000 of a pinhead..." I am not familiar with the pinhead measurement metric, is that smaller than the eye of a needle? Can someone help me out?Captures Allergens, Expels Cleaner AirDyson cyclones capture microscopic particles down to 0.5 microns in size. Objective, In-Depth Review

We purchased the DC25 Animal Ball about two weeks ago. What I would've liked to have seen before purchasing is a review that gave me all the answers- but I quickly realized such a review doesn't exist. It's impossible to tell the difference between what's always true and what's anecdotal, what's proven and what's someone's opinion, brand loyalists, people who are determined to be underwhelmed or unhappy with the product, etc. So, in an effort to help everyone out there who is in the same position I was- here is my attempt at all the answers for you:Some background- we are a family of 3, with 2 Shiba Inu's that are adorable but shed year round, -especially- in the summer. I don't mean there is a little hair here and there, I mean there is literally hair wafting through the air, it is EVERYWHERE, and it never lessens or ends despite hours of "furminating". Beyond that, we are not overly zealous when it comes to cleaning and tend to value our time together over time... 5/5 Sarah - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC25 Animal Ball-Technology Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) We purchased the DC25 Animal Ball about two weeks ago. The vacuum of my dreams!

I've owned just about every top rated vacuum that has been made. I was never satisfied, mostly because they where too heavy to handle, or the animal hair was blown about, rather than sucked up. I do have a canister vacuum that I have had for years, but I wanted a satisfactory upright that was light and easy to handle. I have a cat and a dog, and there is lots of shedding hair, all the time. Our house is mostly hard floors, stairs, and one large rug in the living room. When I saw the DC25 Animal, I decided to spend the money hoping that this vacuum would do the job. It has lived up to my wildest dreams, it is wonderfully easy to handle, so easy to maneuver, the 16 lbs make such a difference compared to those very heavy machines I had before, I had no problem carrying it upstairs. I love that with this vacuum I don't need to select different heights, it goes from floor to carpet to floor. I was even able to clean the dogs bed without the wand attachment. Speaking of the wand/handle... 5/5 Vera Casdia (Long Island, NY) - See all my reviews, December 15, 2008

Apartment dwelling, dog owning, clean freak approved!!!

A vacuum cleaner is one of those items that you "get what you pay for."I have owned 2 cheap-o (less than $100) cleaners over the past two years. One was bagged and the other was bagless. They were both CRAP! I would have to take part the vacuum and unclog it just to get moderate suction power. In the end all i was left with was carpeting that looked clean at first glance...simply because of the vacuum track marks. But when i would closely inspect the carpet, it was nasty. Still covered in dog hair and dust! I wasn't able to vacuum our dog's hair to save my life and it was starting to stress me out. I gave in and started to research online for a new QUALITY vacuum. After hours of online research it came down to two choices and they were both Dysons. I had seen the commercials, knew people that owned them, and was always skeptical about paying so much money for a vacuum cleaner but I couldn't ignore the reviews from both average Joe's and online Consumer... 5/5 ATLsuTIGER "GEAUX TIGERS" (ATL) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC25 Animal Ball-Technology Upright Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) A vacuum cleaner is one of those items that you "get what you pay for."I have owned 2 cheap-o (less than $100) cleaners over the past two years. WORTH THE MONEY. Amazing suction. See my customer pics above

I don't know exactly where to start. I've owned a Sears, a Hoover, and an Electrolux (sadly, Electrolux isn't what is used to be). I researched and read reviews on at least 100 vacuums, watched unbiased youtube reviews, and talked to sales associates. After several months, I narrowed it down to the Dyson DC28 and the Miele Titan. I won't waste your time talking about WHY I chose the DC28 over the Miele Titan, but if you would like me to elaborate, please leave me a comment and I will promptly respond. As far as the DC28 goes, it truly does have incredible suction! We have a longhaired Australian shepherd who sheds hairs sometimes a foot-long, and we regularly have guests, and I admit I'm a clean freak and I vacuum once a day. Yet, with all that daily vacuuming, I was missing SO MUCH, it sickens me. I vacuumed my whole house right before I vacuumed with my DC28, and I filled the canister past maximum capacity, then halfway full again the next day. It's amazing all the dirt... 5/5 Jonathan R. It's an Animal (in all respects)

This whole time I thought I was vacuuming my carpet...what was my weak vacuum doing and why was I wasting my time?I picked up the Dyson from a popular retail home goods store for 20% off the MSRP. Assembly was simple. Snap the Quick-draw Telescope Reach(tm) wand into the flexible hose and fit the wand onto the body of the vacuum. Remove various pieces of cardboard. Vacuum.I live in an apartment with two cats; one of which sheds a lot (we call him fur pants). I had been using a Dirt Devil Featherlite Bagless Upright Vacuum for about 3 years. It picked up large pieces of dirt, and sometimes the smaller pieces. We used it a lot to vacuum cat litter in the cat's room as well. I've used the attachments a few times as well. One thing I noticed about the Dirt Devil is that whenever I wanted to use an attachment or empty the canister, I had to practically prepare myself for an asthma attack. Dirt and dust everywhere. And the thing is...if I pull out an... 5/5 Steven Hernandez (Fairview Heights, IL) - See all my reviews, August 17, 2009

    No regrets

I bought this vacuum from HSN when they offered a deal with additional accessories and an extra filter. Well, the vacuum is heavy as a previous reviewer noted. However, when placed on the proper setting, it behaved almost like it was self propelled. The key is to follow instructions and set the vacuum on the proper setting before turning it on. It works well on my bathroom tile floors in picking up hair. I'm pleased with the ease of use and the telscoping handle. The accessories are easy to handle. The only cons are the lack of on-board tool storage and the hefty price. My carpet looks soooo much better after using this vacuum for a short period of 1 week. Worn areas look so much better since the vacuum's powerful suction have dislodged packed fibers. I have no regrets buying this vacuum at all. My only regret is not buying a Dyson sooner. 5/5 c_jordan (Georgia, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC28 Animal (Kitchen) I bought this vacuum from HSN when they offered a deal with additional accessories and an extra filter. Five stars, but with caveats...

How it works -The attachment is around a foot long (including bristles); it is a lint remover brush-head surrounded by soft plastic bristles. The red area is the lint remover (think of the dog hair removal brushes your mom uses); it has two suction holes - one at the head, one at the base - which allow the swept dust to be sucked into the vacuum while running. When both holes are covered (such as when doing a large, flat surface) the suction is as powerful as any of the other Dyson wand attachments. When only one hole is covered or there is a break in the surface between the two holes (smaller surfaces or blinds) the suction is still strong, but not quite as "vice-like." The idea behind the brush is that the vacuum action will suck in all the dust instead of allowing it to escape into the air. In this regard, the Dyson seems to leave a much smaller "dust footprint" than manual dusters because it does not cause dust clouds. As with all Dyson wand attachments, the dusting... 5/5 Naomi (Storm) (Texas) - See all my reviews, January 13, 2007

I think this attachment is "good enough" and I do use it about once a month for heavy dusting around the house. It is not, however, the super-useful dusting brush I thought I was getting. The brush does NOT dust flat surfaces well. Not only does it kind of push a little of the dust ahead of the bristles, never really sucking it up and leaving "streaks", but it has the tendency to suction itself down HARD to the flat surface. This gets annoying. Because of this, I do not use it for all-over flat surface dusting. What the duster is GREAT for are blinds, ceiling fans and the curves of wood moulding. We have a big black dog and do need to dust blinds & fans more often. A few swipes and the job is done. Same thing when I dust the furniture crevices and mouldings - the duster works great.I do not like to dust base boards with it because somehow as the brush drags along, it seems to statically charge the carpet and the baseboard and any stray dog hairs are... 3/5 Bargain Savvy Mom (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson Soft Dusting Brush (Kitchen) I think this attachment is "good enough" and I do use it about once a month for heavy dusting around the house.
