Walking the Bible, A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses

Creator: Bruce Feiler | Religion - 2005-08-02

The author recounts his ten-thousand-mile journey across the Middle East in search of the roots of the Bible to discover whether it was an abstraction or a living, breathing entity.

Publisher: Harper Perennial

About this book
"The process of gathering these images reminded me of the Bible's effortless ability to reinvent itself for each generation and each new way of searching." —Bruce Feiler Its stories may be the best known in the world, but its locations have long been a mystery. Where did Noah's ark land? Where did Moses receive the Ten Commandments? Where are the lost cities of Sodom and Gomorrah? Now, in Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey, New York Times bestselling author Bruce Feiler offers an unprecedented heart-stirring adventure through the landscape of some of history's most storied events. Featuring Bruce Feiler's own photography as well as his selections from professional collections, Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey brings together breathtaking vistas, intimate portraits, and fascinating panoramas, providing firsthand access to the inscrutable land where three of the world's great religions were born—and finally puts a face on the stories that have long inspired the human spirit. Over several years, Feiler traveled nearly ten thousand miles through the deserts of the Middle East, which led first to his runaway national bestseller Walking the Bible. This new illustrated book follows his route, offering a thrilling photographic voyage through the actual places of some of the Bible's most memorable events—from the heights of Mount Ararat, where Noah's ark landed, to the desert outpost in Turkey, where Abraham first heard the words of God, to the summit where Moses overlooked the Promised Land. Walking the Bible: A Photographic Journey chronicles a landscape that nurtured the relationship between humans and the divine, breathing new meaning into stories that have been a timeless source of inspiration.

    DC33 vs DC25

I have tried both of these, and have come to the conclusion that the DC33 is superior. Here's why:-The suction and brush bar are clearly more powerful. This is what sold me. I can see the difference in carpet lines (medium pile carpet) when I use one or the other.-35ft cord is a significant benefit over the 25ft cord. I can almost do the entire floor by just plugging in a single outlet. Two would cover the whole house. With the DC25, I had to constantly unplug and replug.-Larger dustbin means I can keep vacuuming for longer without emptying. Also, the design on this one seems to keep the shroud (the perforated shield inside the canister) freer of stuck-on dust.-Quieter-Although a bit larger, it is a similar weight to the DC25.-Critical sections can be easily taken apart to clear blockages.-The DC25 has a tiny plastic piece that keeps the vacuum from tipping over in upright mode due to the ball mechanism. If I tilt the vacuum to the side... 4/5 Newton - See all my reviews, November 17, 2010

    GREAT vacuum!!

I did a lot of research before I bought this Dyson and almost got the DC28 Animal one because I have a large dog that sheds. After doing some reading online, I found out this is the exact same machine as the animal except for the attachments! That's the only difference! So I decided for $200 less than the Animal one I could do without the "special" attachments. The very first time I pulled this out of the box and used it in my living room I wasn't all that impressed, especially with the suction but I decided to go over my floor again and practice with the attachments. Well, it must have just needed to warm up or something being brand new because the second time the suction was amazing!! (and ever since!) It left the lines on the carpet from where I had vacuumed (I love that!) and it also fluffed up the carpet and made it feel like when we first bought the carpet and our feet sank down in it a bit!! Very cool!! And the best part - it picked up the dog hair!!!!! Addressing poor ratings from others.

I have read many many reviews on the Dyson DC33 before purchasing. While the majority of them are positive, and I agree, there are a few negative reviews that are just ridiculous.First, I agree that the extension arm does appear cheap and is awkward to use. Does it work, yes. Does this bother me? Not enough to give the vacuum a terrible review. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars. The handle to the wand is a bit flimsy. I get around this by actually holding the wand itself and not the handle.Other than the above, the suction is fantastic. We purchased this vacuum for our new home. The previous owners had pets and vacuumed and shampooed the carpets before we moved it. The DC33 still pulls up dog and cat hair that the previous owners could not get out of the carpet. I have used this vacuum to clean my car and vacuum up dust from sanding our walls. I havent found any other flaws in it, other then the extension wand.As for the other negative... 4/5 lbs360 "lbs360" (Rochester NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Dyson DC33 Multi-Floor Upright Bagless Vacuum Cleaner (Kitchen) I have read many many reviews on the Dyson DC33 before purchasing. Definitly out-performs other vacuums we have owned

We have had the DC14 Animal less than a week, but so far we are amazed at it's performance. With 2 teenage kids, 2 Newfoundland dogs, a cat, a parrot and a finch, the floors see their fair share of dirt, hair, crumbs and feathers. We have mostly carpet with some hardwood floors with runners. This machine does an equally great job on all. Its is easy to push around and the long cord allows you to cover a lot of area without having to find another outlet. The wand is easy to use and, judging by the reviews on the DC07, an improved design. Instead of having to disconnect it from the hose, turn it around and re-connect it as noted on earlier reviews on the DC07, you just release it from the handle and extend it.I don't put a lot of credit in the "sweep with old vacuum then sweep with new" to determine how much better the new unit is. I tried sweeping with the new unit and then swept again with the new unit and picked up more dirt. The test that convinced me that this does a... 4/5 David E. Powerful Vacuum Cleaner, But...

In my earlier working years I managed and then owned and operated a small appliance and motor repair shop. One of my primary services was the repair of vacuum cleaners. I came to know vacuums inside-out and quickly learned that probably the most important factor for top cleaning ability was unrestricted air flow through the machine. Full or cheap off-brand bags reduced air flow and thus prevented efficient cleaning. Years later when I began to learn of Dyson's innovations I knew my next cleaner would be from him. Earlier this year the time came and I purchased one with all the gadgets. I was pleased to see that Dyson's technology did a very good job to maintaining a high and consistent air flow as dirt accumulated in the machine. I was not disappointed in that respect. But a $400-$600 vacuum cleaner needs to do more than maintain suction caused by a high air flow. The unit that I purchased had the feature allowing one to turn off the rotating brush while vacuuming... 2/5 Donald W. Wooten (Gettysburg, PA USA) - See all my reviews, December 18, 2005

Dyson's are great....don't listen to the negative comments...

Ok, look....I sell dysons for a living, as I am a college student who works in the Sears vacuum department. Usually I ignore most ignorant reviews made by those who have tried them and do not like them. But this time, I decided to set the record straight for those who are looking to purchase one.1. Dyson's are a mixed blessing. They have tremendous suction, and no they do NOT typically lose it after a year. If they do, they have a absolutely full two year warrenty that covers even maintainence, something unheard of in vacuum cleaners under a $1000 (the closest other than dyson is a 1 year limited warrenty such as kenmore's); simply call up dyson and they should fix it for you. However, I have seen certain people complain that the suction is sometimes too strong. That is because a dyson depends more upon the power of its suction than its beater bar to pick up most things. Works great on bare floors and 90% of carpets, not as well on some, so there is a... 5/5 Ryan Pierce - See all my reviews, March 12, 2006

Incredible for Pet Owners, But Also Outstanding on Dirt!

I have a Katrina survivor dog that I adopted that can simply be described as a "hair machine." Minutes after vacuuming with my old vac, I'd still see "hair tumbleweeds" here and there. I knew I had to do something, so I ordered the Dyson DC-15. It arrived one day before I arrived at home, and my wife opened it and used it. "That new vacuum is amazing!," she said. I figured "amazing" meant "better than the old one." I took it into a carpeted room that she hadn't vacuumed yet, turned it on, and watched in amazement when after about 3 linear feet of movement produced a swirling hairball in the collector. At first I thought it must be residual hair from where she had used it earlier. This was NOT a section of the floor where I could even SEE any hair. The floor looked relatively clean when I started. So, I emptied the collector and started over. Same thing. Incredible! And not just hair, but dirt! After about 3 weeks with this "Animal," I'm sold. Easy to empty,... 5/5 Jeffrey A. Excellent Vacuum

We recently purchased this vacuum from Bed, Bath and Beyond. While we were a little uneasy about paying this kind of money a 20% coupon helped lower the cost to make it a little more reasonable. We have a shedding labrador and were amazed at the amount of hair that we picked up the first time that we vacuumed. The Dyson offers instant gratification in that you can see the dirt and hair going into the bin. It also offers a no-mess emptying that works at the touch of a buttom and emptys all of the dirt into the trash. The various attachments work great and the vacuum works well on all floors. The pet hair tool is of great use on our cloth couch which is a magnet for our dog's hair.We were torn between the regular animal model and the ball version but decided to go with the ball version since it has a much smaller head assembly and fits beneath chairs and cabinets easier. The ball makes vacuuming almost fun in that just a flip of the wrist allows you to steer... 5/5 J. Lindsey - See all my reviews, May 22, 2006

    Best Vacuum Ever

Exceptional quality and performance. Upon opening the box you can see the quality of the machine and with only a few minor assembly steps you are on your way. Even though I had just cleaned my house I had to "test drive" it's performance. I was amazed at the dust and hair it picked up! The new ball design made turning around furniture and getting into tight spots easy. Well worth the price tag. 5/5 S. Powers (San Diego) - See all my reviews, January 10, 2006

    This vacuum rocks

I'm a long time Oreck XL user. I saw the deal for a refurb on passwird.com, so I grabbed one. I can't believe the volume of dirt this thing pulled out of my carpets after they had been cleaned with the Oreck. It is heavier than the Oreck, but the complaints that it's "too heavy" are exaggerated. I also have had no trouble using the attachments. The trick is to completely extend the flexible hose one time. This keeps it from wanting to drag the base unit after you. The overall industrial design is great although I find the placement of the power button a little quirky. Small price to pay. I'd buy it again. 5/5 Jack Hole (Pacifica, CA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Absolutely love this vacume!!

After my mom purchased a Dyson Animal new last year, I fell in love with it and really wanted one for myself. She paid extra to get the attachments (like the upholstery tool and such) and those extra tools were a waste! They are cumbersome and truely useless. However, the vacume itself is wonderfull. So this Dyson DC 14 Yellow is the exact same machine as the Dyson Animal (purple) but without all the fancy attachments that honestly, no one needs. This reconditioned Dyson works just as well as my mom's new one, and is in perfect condition. The suction is seriously powerfull and everytime we vacume, we like to look in the canister and see what all it picked up. The machine works great on carpet and tile (by turning off the brush) and the wand is long and easy to use, and the canister is very easy to empty (but I recommend you do it outside or out of the way because it is a little dusty). The main reasons why I did not give it 5 stars is this: 1)You cannot use the machine itself... 4/5 Red Flower "bigmomma" (Stillwater, OK USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Life-transforming!

I never thought I would be tempted to wax lyrical about a household appliance, but this vacuum cleaner lives up to the hype 100%. I have velvet sofas that were embedded with dog hair. nothing could get the hair off them or out of the corners of my apartment. one going over with the stair attachment and my furniture is hair and dust free! the suction on this baby is so stong, it also removed dust from mouldings along the walls. Again using the stairs attachement, i was able to vaccum my mattress and the top of 2 armoires instead of swiffering while standing on a step ladder.the design is incredibly user-friendly. i am not a particularly strong person and find the Dyson easy to move around and lift. the hose is built into the upright, so there is no awkward attaching and detaching of parts -- just press a button and the hose pulls off the main unit, and telescopes several feet out. other plusses are that the electrical cord is quite long and the canister is a breeze... 5/5 L.
