  Horrible battery life makes this a luxury purchase

  I am a huge fan of Dyson and own TWO Dyson uprights. Dyson sent me an email to offer registered owners first crack at purchasing this handheld which recently arrived to the US market, and I jumped at the offer, but I am extremely disappointed in the battery life.This otherwise great tool is deeply flawed for running only five minutes.   Great vacuum, tiny battery

  The other reviews pretty much sum it up, but I'll put my thoughts in too.(a) It's a great vacuum. It fills the niche that I was hoping it would fill perfectly: I want to vacuum something small or far away from an outlet, and I don't feel like fetching and plugging in the upright. Suction is great, the tools are great, the canister is great, etc. 5 out of 5 stars for the vacuum.(b) The battery life is ridiculous. I got 5 minutes of hard vacuuming. The way the charger is designed, it wouldn't even be that easy to keep a spare battery, because the actual charging contacts are on the handheld itself. Come on, Dyson, lithium batteries aren't even that heavy! You could have doubled the power with no problem. You could have designed a backup charger like all the cordless power tools have. 0 out of 5 stars for battery/charger design.I give it 4 stars overall, despite the battery issue, because I don't ever plan on using this thing for big cleaning jobs.   A bummer for a Dyson lover

  I couldn't wait to get the Dyson Root 6 - I've had my Dyson DC 07 for 4 years and I LOVE it, so I figured the mini-version would be fantastic. I have 3 Dustbusters (one on each floor) and I was looking forward to the Dyson version, which I was convinced would be top notch.I'm so sorry to be wrong.First off, having to press the button continuously to make it work is a pain. And speaking of pain, the Root is so heavy and unbalanced - all the weight is in the back which puts a lot of strain on your wrist. I haven't noticed any difference in suction to a Dustbuster, but then again, I don't suck up bowling balls.   off brand battery for hand-held Dyson

  I give this product a 3 star rating but in reality I would give it a 5 for price and shipping from company and about a 1.5 on how it works. Battery has a different fit than the OEM version and stays in the charger when I pull the vac out. I also have to make sure there is positive contact regularly as the connection is a bit dicey. Otherwise it works OK. I still have problems with the unit not staying on, but I think the issue is with the loose contact with the vac. All in all this battery is better than nothing and I wasn't willing to spend so much on the OEM version.   Battery arrived quickly after purchase. Charged it up then put it in the DC16 and -- voila! -- just like new. Handheld vacuum sucked up everything on two floors of stairs without interruption.   Makes the Dyson DC16 Actually Useful

  I love the Dyson DC16 vacuum except for one thing- the frustration of having it stop working before I am done using it. The original battery that comes with it lasts only 5 minutes (when new) and after a few months of use the run time drops to less than 2-3 minutes. Great vacuum but the folks at Dyson dont seem to have a clue about batteries. This HQRP battery provides 1500mAh, which is much more than the battery that comes with the Dyson. Furthermore, it is cheaper than a standard (and highly overpriced) Dyson replacement. It works great, and I now have a run time of about 9 minutes. I am sure this will decrease over time, but for now, it makes the vacuum actually useful. Another reviewer noted that the battery did not fit well. Mine fit perfectly. Perhaps they updated the battery to make it fit better.If I had this all to do over, I would not buy a DC16 or any other Dyson product that uses batteries.   Good power, not quite as good fit

  The power seems to last even longer than the original battery that came with the vac- perhaps because technology has advanced in a few years, or... who knows? The only downside (so far; I've only had it for a couple months) is that it doesn't fit as tightly, snug, well, or "completely" as the original. So far that hasn't been a problem, but I worry that down the road - if it shifts in the way it sits - it won't fit in the charger, hanging on the wall, like it does now. 3/5 J.   Comparison to previous model

  The biggest problem with the previous model was the poor battery life. That has been greatly improved in two ways. This model has doubled the battery life and it has a better charger. I loved my first Dyson handheld model in spite of the short battery life and used it often for short jobs. Like this one, it was so easy to grab and use, I was able to keep corners clean, crumbs out of the grout lines in my tile table, computer keyboards clean, drawers clear of all that little stuff that seems to get in them--in short my house was just cleaner in multiple ways that are normally challenging. I loved the trigger on/off action that made its short battery life tolerable and the dependable strong Dyson power, plus the easily dumpable canister. SO, when the battery life began to get shorter and shorter over time, in spite of being fully charged, I anguished. Should I spend $75 for a new battery that might only repeat the fading performance of the first or invest that money in this new... 5/5 C. G.   Excellent in every way except operation time

  As other reviewers have said, this vacuum is lightweight, sturdy, easy to maintain, and has great suction power. Unfortunately it also has a short operation time of up to 10 minutes, with a 3 hour battery charge time. If you can deal with that, and the cost, this vacuum is highly recommended.What boggles my mind is that Dyson didn't design the vacuum to work with a power cord. Either allow the vacuum to be operated while the battery charger is plugged into the battery and the battery is plugged into the vacuum (a "pass through" mode that would send the DC power directly to the vacuum instead of the battery), or provide a separate AC-to-DC adapter with a (longer) cord, that would plug into the existing battery port. This is a no-brainer. If you Google reviews on this vacuum, you see over and over again that the main (if not only) complaint is the short operation time.   A joy to use.

  The DC31 is a joy to use -- so much so that I find myself looking for dust to capture around the house (and since I've run out, now taking it around to my workplace and to other people's homes). Cordless is key, making it convenient to grab and use rather than going into the storage closet to pull out a vacuum, uncoiling the cord, etc.GOOD FOR DUSTINGCertain parts of my home were overdue for a dusting, which was the perfect environment for the DC31. It's good for cleaning dust from hardwood floors, flooring trim, vent covers, and any smooth surface. I use the combination tool with brush (included accessory) to dislodge the slightly stuck-on dust and then capturing it, which is more convenient than getting a damp towel to wipe a dusty surface.   So glad I invested in this hand vac

  This unit is quiet, powerful, and sucks up my German "Shedders" hair in a jiffy. I have three sets of carpeted stairs in my house, and it's so wonderful to whip this light-weight machine out and take care of all three sets of stairs in mere minutes. No power cords, no maneuvering a heavy machine - it's quick and efficient. I was concerned about the battery cutting out after 6/10 minutes, but so far it hasn't been an issue. If anything, it makes me more efficient! No dilly-dallying allowed, I get right to what needs to be vacuumed and find I'm finished long before the battery discharges. This Dyson is expensive, but if you have a pet who sheds like crazy - you'll be very happy to have invested in this machine. Can't wait to try it out in my vehicle. 5/5 I.   expensive toy

  This unit is quite small -- the brush head is just 3.5" wide. So, if you're planning to vacuum the animal hair from your couch, you'll have to move quickly to finish before the battery dies! And it takes 3.5 hours to recharge!Wouldn't be so bad if the unit came with two batteries and a charger. But, at the moment, you can't even buy a spare battery at [..]!I have a Dyson canister unit that I like a lot, but I cannot recommend this DC-31 "animal" until Dyson ships it with two batteries. 6-10 minutes of cleaning is basically useless and, for the price, insulting. 2/5 D.   Alright first, it is pricey, but what really matters is how well does it work? Like other Dysons this is great for people with allergies. It works great, the motorized brush makes a big difference and it will pick up a lot of dirt, hair, etc. Battery life is better than the previous model (DC 16), it would be around the 10/6 minutes claimed. Also an improvement over the previous model, the battery can be disconnected and charged separately. It does not have a wall mount, this isn't a big deal to me, but just be aware if you care.   We have two small dogs, three cats, three litter boxes, and three bedrooms with carpet. Everything else is hard wood.I read the reviews here with caution, and debated long before purchasing this product. I looked at what I would be using it for, and didn't think I would need it for much more than six minutes at a time. We also have the Dyson Animal Upright vacuum, so for anything that would require more than six minutes of work, it's not a hassle to haul the big guy out. (And whoa - does that work! Wow.)Two of the litter boxes are in my "office" (one of the carpeted bedrooms), so I keep this little guy in here, plugged in next to one of the boxes. Every so often, I use it for about a minute to vacuum up any stray crystals, whether they are near the box or elsewhere in the office.   Like a built in cleaning timer

  Yes, the battery only lasts 6 minutes. This is widely advertised and shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who buys the Dyson handheld. It was actually a feature that kept me from purchasing it until I started thinking about how I clean. I'm kind of glad I did wait to buy one, since I really like the new attachment for the Animal version.I own a Dyson upright, the Animal version with the brush that moves with air flow. The problem with that one, though, is that the brush often stops moving if it's dealing with too much fur. This handheld unit actually powers the motorized brush, so it just keep going. It does a great job on the dog beds, the couch, and our recliner. Plus, the brush comes out easily for cleaning. Love that.I try to regularly bring out the big vacuum to clean house and suck up fur and dirt. But I know that doing so means I'm in for an actual cleaning session, something I don't always have time for. So I end up passing by the fur... 5/5 L.   Best Handheld Vac on this Planet

  I see most of the negative reviews on here have to do with the 6 minute battery life on the DC16. Let me tell you my experience with this handheld vac from Dyson. I always like to have a handheld vacuum around for small little cleanups and I've used endless models throughout my life. Their fates are always the same: they work OK for a few months and then get so clogged and run down that the only appropriate place to keep them is in the garbage can. These kinds of subpar vacuums would certainly NEED a battery life of much more than 6 minutes because their power was so minimal it would simply be impossible to get anything done otherwise.I have seen this DC16 and DC16 Animal in stores for a little while and I was hesitant to purchase it due to my past experiences with handhelds, even though I have a Dyson DC07 and it's been going strong for 5+ years.
