  A Mixed Bag

  I've owned two different Oreck XLs over the course of six years and used them 5 days a week for most of that time, so I can say with confidence that I'm well aware of the pros and cons of this model. I wanted a vacuum powerful enough to handle cleaning two or three big houses a day that wasn't too heavy to lift in and out of the trunk several times a day. On those two points, the XL clearly does excel. With an empty bag it's only 8lbs, making it by far the lightest upright vac I've found that can do the job. And when it's functioning properly it performs very well. When it isn't you're going to run into so problems.Here's the good -1. As I said, this vacuum is extremely light and highly maneuverable, which does somewhat make up for it's lack of a hose with attachments. It can lay completely flat for getting underneath furniture, and it absolutely glides over hard wood or most carpets. Elderly housekeepers may find this especially appealing, since it's not... 3/5 D.   great for allergies and animal hair

  I have had an Oreck for 18 years and I won't own any other kind of vacuum. I worked for Merry Maids which that is all they use. I have used it on all types of flooring and hauled it from house after house when I was working. Now I am at home all the time and I bought one when I quit working and I won't own any other vacuum. I have raise dogs and I have not found another vacuum that will pick up the hair like the Oreck. I just can't say enough good about it. I keep looking at them and saving for a new one I can't wait to get one. My 18 year old Oreck that I have has a few broken parts but it is still doing it's job and very well.   Love My New Oreck

  I'm in love--with my new commercial Oreck! In the last 7 years, I have gone through 3 vacuums. My all tile house took a toll on the wheels of all 3 Kenmores that I owned. They did a great job picking up the dog hair, and cleaning my rugs--but not so good on the dust. My old Orecks were non-commercial ones that developed electrical cord problems. That's why I tried tried the Kenmore uprights.This new Oreck has been terrific so far. I had forgotten how light an Oreck is! I can vacuum my mattresses, dog beds, couch cushions by just lifting the Oreck onto the surface. I do still swiffer after I vacuum, but I'm down to one swiffer cloth instead of three. (We live in southern Nevada with lots of wind and dust storms) It also has a more compact head so it goes under more of my furniture and around tight spaces.When I read the other reviews before I bought my Oreck, two negatives were mentioned; the loudness and the smell from the bags.   Not as good as Oreck bags

  These bags fit my Oreck XL fine. However, they do not move air as efficiently as the Oreck bags. The reduced suction was immediately noticeable (the vacuum was much easier to push) with these bags. I assume part of it is the allergy filter technology. As a result I found that they need changing a little more frequently because the suction drops. I estimate they have about 2/3 the life of the Oreck bags I had before.Also, these bags do not have the "Germstat" protection that inhibits mold and germs so if you vacuum certain things, like pet hair or pet litter or get any moisture into the bags they will start to have a bit of a funky smell after a while, whereas the Oreck bags produce much lower odor by comparison.These bags are also made in China, which the manufacturer tries to obfuscate by printing "Made in P.R.O.C." on the packaging (PROC = People's Republic of China).   This was great. My Oreck XL wasn't picking up the dirt anymore, and I didn't want to spend the money to take it to the repairman. I watched a YouTube video on how to replace the rollers and belt, and purchased this item. You need a long Phillips screwdriver to open the bottom of the vacuum (the screws are set in quite deeply). It turned out my belt was broken and the rollers were a dirty mess. The roller I received had grey bristles, not red as in the picture, and as the original roller had. The roller fit in easily. I replaced the belt with a little struggle, because it doesn't stretch that well. Probably a guy with strong hands could do it more easily than I, but I did get it done.   Needs a longer electrical cord

  Hands down, this is a great vacuum. It's lasted my family for well over 4 years, and I don't see any indication that it won't last longer. It's not falling apart like the cheaper vacuums you might find at other stores.It does one thing (suck), and it does it fairly well. Be forewarned though it's not going to pick up the tough jobs in one pass like you may have been led to believe in the infomercials. Recently we were cleaning up the needles from our real Christmas tree and found it took 5-7 passes of the area to get all the needles picked up. For normal household use, it performs fine.My one real complaint is the size of the cord. I don't live in a large house with big rooms by any means, but I do have a problem of the cord not reaching from one side of the room to another.   Design Flaw

  I recently bought the Oreck, after falling for the ads on tv and in print, about the suction power and the lightweight advantage. I love the fact that it isn't heavy, and the suction is fine, but the design is flawed, as it clogs almost every time I use it. I have to take it apart and clear out the entry area right behind the beater brush. It has a sharp angle, and debris gets caught up in there. I have long haired dogs and use the vacuum a lot. If I suck up a tiny piece of paper or even a 1/2 inch long leaf, it clogs and the hair won't go up into the bag. I am very disappointed.   I recently baught 2 Oreck Classic's for our business and after seeing how well it performed there I had to purchase one for my house. I don't know what happened to the other people who are posting about complaints but one thing is foresure... My Oreck is Amazing.We have a 145lb St.Bernard that sheds very heavy in the summer and the Oreck pulls the hair and dander up with ease... I have had to make 3-5 passes to get all of the dirt and hair but that is no different from other models I have owned.I would recommend this vaccum to everyone.   Trusty belts

  I inherited my grandmother's 1980's era Oreck Upright almost 2 years ago, and darn it if the belt didn't break soon after I got it. I ordered these belts, was able to easily install the new belt, and so far so good--same belt is up to almost 2 years of use without fraying yet. I vacuum about 1500 square feet of carpet once per week, and then every two weeks to month I vacuum an add'l 750 sq ft of carpet, in case you wonder how often this belt is put to use.   Loud, Underperforming, Overpriced, Overhyped

  I certainly admire the pluck and salesmanship of Mr. Oreck, who's clearly energetic and is seen everywhere, e.g. QVC, newspaper inserts, even on a large billboard on Broadway.However, I can NOT endorse his poor product, which is about 20 years behind the curve in vacuum technology. I had the Oreck vacuum for seven years. Right out of the box, the vacuum is so ear-splittingly loud that I had to wear ear-plugs when vacuuming. The suction is lousy, and you have to go over the same area a few times for it to pick up lints and fine dust. The filter bags are expensive and have to be replaced frequently, or it loses suction even more.The only advantage is that it is light, but you will get tired from having to re-vacuum the same area multiple times. I use Dyson now, and am very happy with its suction performance, though it has its share of flaws (see my review of Dyson for details).   Nothing special

  I have to admit that I fell for the "if it costs more it must be better" theory when I purchased this vacuum. It does the job adequately enough, however, I find it is very hard to "push" along as you vacuum and I do not have any extra plush carpeting; just basic apartment carpeting! I have to really put my shoulders into pushing it along. I know there are less expensive vacuums out there that are much easier to use. I've already invested a lot of money into this purchase so I plan to make the best of it, however, if I had it to do over again, I would have went into a store and actually tried some vacuums first; I ordered this one online without ever trying it first and regret that now.   belt eater!

  I hate this vacuum. I go through belts like crazy. Not only do the belts break easily, but I had smoke coming from mine. I've taken it to be repaired and now I am getting ready to take it in again. I love the small vac. that comes with it, but that's about it. Like another user, I hate vacuuming my floor too because something always happens to it. And I'm pretty careful with it.
