When stationary, Roomba's affect is flat. However, when the robot is activated and begins zipping across the floor sucking up dirt and dust, this changes—it becomes industrious, determined. Roomba illustrates two important lessons for ...

About this book
What makes a product successful?   How it looks? The way it functions? Its ease of use? Or do factors like price and marketing dominate?   In a quest to find answers to these questions, Deconstructing Product Design engages readers in a process of critically analyzing a diverse collection of 100 innovative products, from well-known classics to contemporary objects of desire. The goal is to support critical thinking about design, facilitate discovery of patterns of success (and failure) across products, and enable readers to apply lessons learned to their own design work. Experts from multiples design disciplines contribute commentary, including: Robert Blaich, industrial design; Jill Butler, graphic design; Alan Cooper, technology design; Brock Danner, architecture; Kimberly Elam, graphic design; Donald Emmite, design history; Larimie Garcia, graphic arts; Scott Henderson, product design; Kritina Holden, human factors; Robert Kingslyn, graphic design; Jon Kolko, interaction design; Lyle Sandler, experience design; Rob Tannen, human factors; Dori Tunstall, Design Anthropology, Steven Umbach, Product Design; Paula Wellings, interaction design. It's official: Less is More

Like most reviewers here, I love my Roomba 550 (to the extent that a man can love a Horseshoe Crab, that is), but feel disgusted by the poor durability of the spinning side brush. The first 'arm' of the side brush broke off after just two weeks of use. Within two months, my Roomba was completely 'armless'. So I ordered this 3-pack one month ago.The new brush has only three 'arms' compared to six in the original design. This has alarmed some reviewers, who thought they have received counterfeit replacement parts. But according to the official iRobot web site, the three-arm version is indeed the new design. I was initially skeptical of whether three arms are better than six in terms of durability. But so far the new brush seems to be working just fine. At least there is no sign of any arms breaking off... 3/5 NLee the Engineer (Nashua, NH) - See all my reviews, December 2, 2008

Works on the older Roombas too!

I have the older Roomba Scheduler and also a Discovery and those come with the two brush shorter side brushes, not this one which has three brushes on the rotator. The brushes are a bit longer in this product which I thought might be a problem with the placement of it so close to the wheel, but it appears the old brush was also smacking up against the wheel anyway. If it was a problem I would simply trim the bristles a bit, but didn't have to.These little things seem to make my Roombas work even better than before even if they were not intended to be used on the older models! 5/5 Amery Priestman - See all my reviews, April 11, 2010

A necessary replacement (3 arms good, 5 arms bad)

Anyone remembers Orwell's Animal Farm? :)))Like all good things in life, the helicopter Roomba brushes only last for so long. A time comes when they need to be replaced. In our case, there was in fact a transition period where our 5-arm helicopter became a 4-arm, then a 3-arm so we got the replacements. They were 3-arm brushes :). In all fairness, I can't say if they perform better or worse than the original, I'm just happy that our Roombas (got 2) are complete again in the way their maker wishes them to be.From a prospective buyer's point of view, it's probably important to testify that the replacements do work. They do mount quite nicely to replace the old-style and the Roomba does not seem to mind. 3/5 A. Dent "Aragorn" (Minas Anor, GD) - See all my reviews, March 10, 2009

    Replacement Battery for Roomba

Bought this battery as the most inexpensive replacement for our Roomba. Put it in, charged it up and it works great. Word of warning to Roomba owners...never let it sit off the charger. Allowing it to completely discharge can kill the battery completely. We went on vacation and unplugged it then didn't recharge for a while and it just died. Just Like The Original

Great battery, Brought my roomba back to life. The roomba has more energy than it did when I bought it brand new. Been using this battery for quite sometime now and still holds a great charge. Highly recommend this battery. Thanks. 5/5 Jurijs Semjonovs - See all my reviews, May 1, 2011

    Works great

I was a little hesitant about buying a generic battery for my Roomba since I usually buy direct from the manufacturer. The price on this was so much lower, however, that I decided to give it a try. The battery works great and I'm very happy with the seller. 5/5 Reza Pazooki "macchap" (Seattle, WA United States) - See all my reviews, July 27, 2011

    There's not much to it

This is a pretty simple product, not much could go wrong with it. I got it and yes installing new filters do make your roomba work better. I also recommend some of the replacement brushes if you feel your roomba isn't like it used to be. You don't have to change sweeper bags on this thing but it does need things to be replaced sometimes. 5/5 Anthony J. Lambos (Canton, Ohio) - See all my reviews, April 6, 2008

Use canned air to make them last.

Roomba owners know that a fresh filter captures more dust than an old one. If you haven't changed your filter in a while, you are really hampering the cleaning potential of your little robot helper. This is a good price and certainly much better than buying from irobot directly. I make my filters last much longer by taking them outside and using canned air to blast them "clean". It only takes about 5 seconds and makes them almost as good as new. I do this about 4 times (once a month) before I finally replace them. 4/5 Work of Life (Miami, Florida USA) - See all my reviews, February 20, 2009

These are not compatible with Roomba 560 with the blue filters

I thought that these filters were compatible with my Roomba 560 because it said "500 series compatible" and I figured that mine fell into that category. Wrong. These yellow ones are flat and the return policy is "no returns" basically so that's money down the drain. 1/5 0, November 1, 2010

Defective Battery - Review contains updates re customer service and replacement battery

Very disappointed in this product. They describe this as an iRobot battery, and even put a picture of the iRobot battery in the product listing, however, and this should have been obvious from the price, this is NOT an iRobot battery! Now, I'm not an iRobot snob, and I would be perfectly happy with a generic replacement battery, IF IT WORKED! It holds juice, and it will power the Roomba, but upon docking with the home base, I get a one red blink error light (battery problem) and a fast red blink on the charge indicator light (never turns green after charging). I thought this could have been due to the Roomba forcing a deep recharge (16 hour cycle), but I left the Roomba on the home base for 24 hours, took it off, and the Roomba was still indicating it had no charge. I did a reset of the Roomba software (hold down the "spot" and "dock" buttons at the same time for 10 seconds), and only then did the indicator light turn green. As soon as I placed it back on the homebase however, the... 1/5 Jason L. Pyrz (Naperville, IL) - See all my reviews, March 22, 2009

    Generic battery but works well

There seems to be a variety of experiences with this battery, and I wanted to relate my experience with purchasing it.I was shipped a generic Roomba 500 battery by "Allergy Be Gone". I think unless you buy directly from Amazon (for about 2x the price), this is what you will get. When I installed the battery, I found that it was keyed so you could only install it in one direction - it wasn't possible to install the battery backwards. It was really easy to install, requiring only a Philips head screwdriver. My Roomba then charged up in a very short period of time, and it now runs for 2+ hours. The battery charges fine using either the charging station or when plugged in directly.I think "Allergy Be Gone" sells a higher quality battery than "Battery Superstore" sells. Reviews that mention Battery Superstore seem to be lower than other sellers, so I would recommend being careful about who you buy this from.Overall, I am very pleased with this... 5/5 Brian D. BEWARE OF BATTERY WAREHOUSE, THEY ARE SELLING GENERIC BATTERIES!

I was a little skeptical when I saw that Battery Warehouse was selling this battery for $41, when even Amazon.com is selling it for $63.47, and some vendors sell it for as much $90, but I went ahead and took a chance with Battery Warehouse on the battery. What a mistake that was. When I received my battery and opened it up, I immediately noticed that the sticker indicating that the battery was indeed iRobot genuine was missing. I called Battery Warehouse to inquire if this was a real iRobot battery, and they assured me that it was, but I still had second thoughts about it.After a call to iRobot, we determined that this was in fact a generic battery that was NOT made by iRobot. I was also told that using this battery in my Roomba would void my warranty!Battery Warehouse refused to allow me to return this, so I had to get Amazon to give me an A2Z refund on it. Good filters, won't last forever though

These are OEM filters that fit my Roomba Discovery just fine. I try to replace them when they start looking really bad (once every 2-3 mos. for me). They are disposable and won't stand up to washing. 4/5 Kevin Scarbery (Alexandria, VA USA) - See all my reviews, November 8, 2006

    They are just filters...

If you have a Roomba, you will need to replace the filter every month or so. The little robot vacuum appears to be very good at picking up even microscopic pieces of grit, and the filter helps it keep its suction. Still going strong in my Roomba 550 after 3 months

The original battery pack in my Roomba 550 was able to run the vacuum for about two hours initially. After the first year, its run time has dropped to about one hour. It deteriorated quickly during the next 6 months, to the point that the vacuum can only run for 3-4 minutes before the dreaded 'I-am-dying' beep. I tried everything to revive the battery, including removing the pack and deep-discharging/charging it manually. Finally, I concluded that the battery has developed high internal resistance and cannot be rescued. Good battery, not a fake copy

I'm always wary of 3rd party batteries, but when I got this one 2.4 years ago, I tested it and got a runtime of 2.5h on my roomba, which was longer than the stock battery that only gave 2h.Now, after a bit over 2 years, it's only giving me 30-60mn depending on whether I do a deep cycle charge before using it. In other words, the battery is not doing well. But 2 years is all one should expect from such batteries (including the stock ones), and they were much cheaper than stock, so they're a must buy.Thank you to HQRP for selling an honest product. 5/5 M. A Hard to Find Tool

You don't find the triangle-head security screws this fits often. Mainly in some toys, fast-food premiums, and electronic devices. But when you want to remove one, especially when it's deeply recessed inside a molded socket, it's somewhere between difficult and impossible to do without the right tool. I've been looking for a proper screwdriver in this style for a long time without success when I stumbled on this one.It isn't fancy, and you might even say it feels a little cheap, but you're not tightening lug-nuts on a truck here. You're inserting and removing small screws usually sunk into soft plastic, and it works great for its intended purpose. If your intended purpose is to disassemble fast food toys (for modification, scrounging parts for projects, or replacement of batteries) be aware that some are not only held together with screws, they're glued or sonic welded as well. Beware of Metapo

My Metapo Scooba battery performed well until two weeks before the warranty expired, when it died. I contacted Metapo by phone and they were VERY reluctant to take any action. First they indicated that I should wait two weeks and file a claim under the extended warranty that I had purchased. I said no, I had already contacted the extended warranty company and they said that it was Metapo's responsibility. Then Metapo argued about the actual length of the warranty. Finally they wanted copies of my purchase receipt and original warranty. I immediately emailed these documents to them. A month has passed and I've never heard from them again. If you buy the battery, you can expect to have to buy another one when it quits because if my experience is any indication of the integrity of this company, there will be no manufacturer support for any problems that you may have. 2/5 J. Great Substitute

We have owned our Scooba for three years and absolutely love our Scooba. Even though I love my Scooba I hate the battery because of its short life and how expensive it is to replace. I have ordered several replacement batteries from iRobot but had gotten frustrated with the amount of money we were spending on replacement batteries. I decided to take a chance on this replacement battery and I have been very happy that I did. The battery is only a fraction of the cost of the battery sold by iRobot but seems to work at least as well and maybe better. I have had the battery for almost 5 months and it is still working great. One issue that I have seen raised related to this battery which I think may be in error is related to its larger size which allegedly causes Scooba to not seal properly causing Scooba to not suck up the water from the floor. Not an authentic iRobot brand battery

I just received this order and discovered that, despite the deceptive photo for the product description, this is a generic replacement and not an authentic iRobot brand battery. I have not yet tested it to see how well it performs; but I am quite upset with the deceptive product description. Now that I read the reviews others have written, I find several reviews that point out that this is a generic brand battery-- I wish I had read those more carefully before buying this battery. There are several other companies selling aftermarket batteries for the Roomba on Amazon. I have no idea if they are better or worse than this one-- but several are cheaper and clearly identify themselves as aftermarket, 3rd party batteries. I decided to pay a little bit more for this battery because I thought I was getting an iRobot brand battery. So, if you are considering buying this battery hopefully you read these reviews more carefully than I did and know ahead of time what you... 1/5 Scott A. Really does hold a charge better than original.

The original was fine, but unimpressive, generally. My initial battery died pretty quickly, going from over an hour, to around 15 minutes, to under... anyway, after a few charges and discharges, this lasts considerably longer than the original. It does what it's sold to do. Half the reviewers are rating Amazon's ability to ship the battery on time, somehow... mine arrived in 2 days (prime).Good price, good product. 5/5 nobaboon "nobaboon" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Blu Ray solved

My biggest problem was I had both a DVD player and A Blu-Ray player. I couldn't find a universal remote that would operate both, and most of them wouldn't operate my Blu-Ray at all. I knew that the Logitech remotes would, but I was hessitant to buy one because of the bad reviews that other harmony's have gotten. I haven't had this remote a long time but so far I've had no trouble. The 510 not only operates both my DVD and my Blu-Ray independently, but has the ability to control all of the buttons that are on the original remotes. Thus making it so I don't have to go looking for my original remotes because I might find my self needing a key that this one won't perform. I'm now able to store away my other remotes.Set up was actually easier than expected but still took a while. This is my fault. If you know how you want things set up it's fast and easy. The key is to make up your mind before you start. And, once you get esed to it navigation is quite simple... 4/5 Stephan M. Irwin "icon" (mesa az) - See all my reviews, December 18, 2008

Sleek, Easy to Setup, & Does everything you need!!!

Good Looking, Affordable, and programs easily:This remote is sleek looking, though it is hard to tell from the pictures. It fits very nicely in the hand and works as advertised. The programming is the easiest it has ever been. All you need is your component model numbers and which input your devices are connected to, the software will do the rest. All you do is answer questions and the software guides you through the programming. I bought and programmed 2 harmony remotes; Harmony One (6 components) and this 510 (3 components). The programming software worked flawlessly each time. Unless you are completely clueless about your system, you should be able to program this, no problem. Gone are the days of programming by a series of pressing and holding certain buttons.Four Customizable Color buttonsThis remote is unique in that it has the four colored buttons at the bottom that will control whatever you like. For example I like to us the "Sleep" function... 5/5 S. Brad Thornton "Guitarminator" (Reston, VA) - See all my reviews, February 4, 2009

    Good but not great

This remote does what it says. It was easy to set up and and works without any problem. The onscreen prompts and instructions are helpful and have taken care of any issues I encountered, such as a device not turning on as needed. I am only controlling three devices, TV, Blu-ray player and cable box/dvr. This until can control up to 5 devices. There are a couple of things I don't like about it. The volume and change channel controls are in a horseshoe shape in the lower middle of the unit. The controls are almost flush with the background, making them hard to feel in a darkened room. I also don't like that the number keys are way down on the bottom of it unit. It makes it hard to press the buttons using one hand. The individual number buttons are also close together, making it a little difficult to press a particular button without hitting others too.If I had it to do over, I'd look more carefully at some of the higher priced units. Somethings you just don't know... 3/5 NCDave "Dave" (High Point, NC, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
