About this book
First in an all-new trilogy inspired by Isaac Asimov's legendary science fiction collection "I, Robot." 2035: Susan Calvin is beginning her residency at a Manhattan teaching hospital, where a select group of patients is receiving the latest in diagnostic advancements: tiny nanobots, injected into the spinal fluid, that can unlock and map the human mind. Soon, Susan begins to notice an ominous chain of events surrounding the patients. When she tries to alert her superiors, she is ignored by those who want to keep the project far from any scrutiny for the sake of their own agenda. But what no one knows is that the very technology to which they have given life is now under the control of those who seek to spread only death...

About this book
The three laws of Robotics: 1) A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm 2) A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3) A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. With these three, simple directives, Isaac Asimov changed our perception of robots forever when he formulated the laws governing their behavior. In I,Robot, Asimov chronicles the development of the robot through a series of interlinked stories: from its primitive origins in the present to its ultimate perfection in the not-so-distant future--a future in which humanity itself may be rendered obsolete. Here are stories of robots gone mad, of mind-read robots, and robots with a sense of humor. Of robot politicians, and robots who secretly run the world--all told with the dramatic blend of science fact and science fiction that has become Asmiov's trademark.

About this book
In 1950, Alan Turing, the British mathematician, cryptographer, and computer pioneer, looked to the future: now that the conceptual and technical parameters for electronic brains had been established, what kind of intelligence could be built? Should machine intelligence mimic the abstract thinking of a chess player or should it be more like the developing mind of a child? Should an intelligent agent only think, or should it also learn, feel, and grow?Affect and Artificial Intelligence is the first in-depth analysis of affect and intersubjectivity in the computational sciences. Elizabeth Wilson makes use of archival and unpublished material from the early years of artificial intelligence (1945-70) until the present to show that early researchers were more engaged with questions of emotion than many commentators have assumed. She documents how affectivity was managed in the canonical works of Walter Pitts in the 1940s and of Turing in the 1950s, in projects from the 1960s that injected artificial agents into psychotherapeutic encounters, in chess-playing machines from the 1940s to the present, and in the Kismet (sociable robotics) project at MIT in the 1990s."In this fresh and provocative contribution to affect studies, Elizabeth Wilson convincingly argues that from its beginnings the theory and practice of artificial intelligence has been decisively marked by feelings---surprise, curiosity, delight, shame, and contempt---as well as computational logic. She suggests, with wonderful wit and a fine intelligence, that interiority is conjugated by positive and passionate affects of attachment as well as cognitive circuits among humans and machines."

    OK, not great vacuum

I've used the Roomba 610 and 560. I now have two refurbished 560s in our house, at the same price as one 610. And it's definitely a better value. Before I talk about the 610, let me share what's good and bad about Roombas in general, based on my experience with both the 560s and 610:Pros:- You don't have to vacuum, the Roomba does it for you- Scheduled cleanings so you don't even have to worry about it or be home to hear the noise- Floors stay clean without much effort- One button start it and forget about itCons:- Absolute pain in the butt to clean these things. There's the two brushes, the front wheel, the spinning brush (which requires a screwdriver to remove), and the dust bin. All of these must be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, at least once per cleaning session.- It's not effort free. As I said above, lots to clean, which requires 5-10 minutes each time you want to run the Roomba.- With pets,... 3/5 Roopesh Sheth (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews, November 29, 2009

Great for light upkeep, excellent customer service

We have five pets. Three elderly long haired cats and two large short haired dogs. We recently upgraded to a new home with a cream colored carpet and a mix of tile and linoleum in an open floor plan. What was I thinking? I was thinking I had three days to pick a house for a relocation is what I was thinking! But I digress. The carpet isn't perfect, it's five years old and the previous owners were pet owners too, but I was determined to keep it in good shape.I held out for the professional model despite the difference in price. I figured we had a professional level of hair here. Between one cat whose fur has the texture of cotton candy, another cat whose main hobby is tearing paper apart bit by bit, and the dogs with their rolling around on the floor I needed something that could stand up to the mess. I assumed I would need the larger debris bin to hold all the stuff that comes out of the carpet but actually after a few runs I felt that the smaller one with an air... 5/5 Noelle W Dempsey (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 610 Roomba Professional Series (Kitchen) We have five pets. This thing is great!

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won't clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won't have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can't get to once a month or so. Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something's around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won't get stuck, for instance... 4/5 Unna (NJ United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) New Roomba vs. Old

If you are new to Roomba, you will wonder if it is worthwhile. The answer is clearly YES, since anything it cleans is that much less for you to clean. However, which is better, the old (and cheaper) Roomba, or the new models like the 530?First, the 530 comes with the charging/base station, and this is very useful. I have placed this in the entranceway which leads into the livingroom, the kitchen or the bedroom. Using the virtual walls (included), I block off rooms so that it can only do the entranceway + 1 other room. I simply press the "Clean" button, and it backs itself off the charging stand and then spends the next 2 hours cleaning, finally returning to the charging stand. Nice!Should you upgrade from an older model Roomba (I now use my old Roomba upstairs)? It depends on your situation. By-the-way, the old virtual walls do NOT work with the new Roomba.New Roomba:Fall down stairs? NeverClimb onto thick throw rugs... 4/5 D. C. It's Like a Beloved Pet Who MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER

Awesome. This new generation fixes all the problems of the previous. Much smarter, much bigger dust bin, much better in every way. Great that it self-docks when tired. Maintanence is a snap...really could not be easier/faster. There are some negatives - how could there not be? - but this thing has such a contagious personality that it starts feeling like your pet, and you're inclined to forgive, and even find the faults charming. You have to prep the room (cords up and out of the way, no papers or clutter on the floor, move small items out of the room and learn which objects present problems and get them out of the way). Performance varies on throw rugs (it's great on rug/carpet surfaces themselves, but Roomba can get caught up as it travels over edges of throw rugs that don't have much weight or cling). It's good at slowing down and banging objects gently, but less so on narrow vertical objects (e.g. piano legs), which it really clunks (not enough to damage, but it will... 5/5 New Yawkuh "New Yawkuh" (Queens, NY United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 530 Roomba Vacuuming Robot, White (Kitchen) Awesome. A Great Product Made Even Better

With two dogs in the house we could not live without our Roomba. The 530 is a vast improvement from earlier models. It seems to pick up more dirt, the battery life is longer, the fast-charge is about 33% more rapid than its Discovery predecessors and it is generally more quiet. The new sensors that prevent the robot from "speed-bumping" into furniture are a very nice touch, but beware if the robot is in a tight area, it may appear sluggish -- the sensors are working to continually slow it down. It's a feature I like, but need to get used to.My only concern with this robot is the high cost of parts. The bot itself is cheaper than earlier models but the components most prone to breakage or wear-out are twice the cost so the lifetime operation costs may be higher. Replacement batteries are nearly $100. Earlier models were $50.ONE MONTH LATER ....This is a slight amend to my review above. It's official: Less is More

Like most reviewers here, I love my Roomba 550 (to the extent that a man can love a Horseshoe Crab, that is), but feel disgusted by the poor durability of the spinning side brush. The first 'arm' of the side brush broke off after just two weeks of use. Within two months, my Roomba was completely 'armless'. So I ordered this 3-pack one month ago.The new brush has only three 'arms' compared to six in the original design. This has alarmed some reviewers, who thought they have received counterfeit replacement parts. But according to the official iRobot web site, the three-arm version is indeed the new design. I was initially skeptical of whether three arms are better than six in terms of durability. But so far the new brush seems to be working just fine. At least there is no sign of any arms breaking off... 3/5 NLee the Engineer (Nashua, NH) - See all my reviews, December 2, 2008

Works on the older Roombas too!

I have the older Roomba Scheduler and also a Discovery and those come with the two brush shorter side brushes, not this one which has three brushes on the rotator. The brushes are a bit longer in this product which I thought might be a problem with the placement of it so close to the wheel, but it appears the old brush was also smacking up against the wheel anyway. If it was a problem I would simply trim the bristles a bit, but didn't have to.These little things seem to make my Roombas work even better than before even if they were not intended to be used on the older models! 5/5 Amery Priestman - See all my reviews, April 11, 2010

A necessary replacement (3 arms good, 5 arms bad)

Anyone remembers Orwell's Animal Farm? :)))Like all good things in life, the helicopter Roomba brushes only last for so long. A time comes when they need to be replaced. In our case, there was in fact a transition period where our 5-arm helicopter became a 4-arm, then a 3-arm so we got the replacements. They were 3-arm brushes :). In all fairness, I can't say if they perform better or worse than the original, I'm just happy that our Roombas (got 2) are complete again in the way their maker wishes them to be.From a prospective buyer's point of view, it's probably important to testify that the replacements do work. They do mount quite nicely to replace the old-style and the Roomba does not seem to mind. 3/5 A. Dent "Aragorn" (Minas Anor, GD) - See all my reviews, March 10, 2009

Defective Battery - Review contains updates re customer service and replacement battery

Very disappointed in this product. They describe this as an iRobot battery, and even put a picture of the iRobot battery in the product listing, however, and this should have been obvious from the price, this is NOT an iRobot battery! Now, I'm not an iRobot snob, and I would be perfectly happy with a generic replacement battery, IF IT WORKED! It holds juice, and it will power the Roomba, but upon docking with the home base, I get a one red blink error light (battery problem) and a fast red blink on the charge indicator light (never turns green after charging). I thought this could have been due to the Roomba forcing a deep recharge (16 hour cycle), but I left the Roomba on the home base for 24 hours, took it off, and the Roomba was still indicating it had no charge. I did a reset of the Roomba software (hold down the "spot" and "dock" buttons at the same time for 10 seconds), and only then did the indicator light turn green. As soon as I placed it back on the homebase however, the... 1/5 Jason L. Pyrz (Naperville, IL) - See all my reviews, March 22, 2009

    Generic battery but works well

There seems to be a variety of experiences with this battery, and I wanted to relate my experience with purchasing it.I was shipped a generic Roomba 500 battery by "Allergy Be Gone". I think unless you buy directly from Amazon (for about 2x the price), this is what you will get. When I installed the battery, I found that it was keyed so you could only install it in one direction - it wasn't possible to install the battery backwards. It was really easy to install, requiring only a Philips head screwdriver. My Roomba then charged up in a very short period of time, and it now runs for 2+ hours. The battery charges fine using either the charging station or when plugged in directly.I think "Allergy Be Gone" sells a higher quality battery than "Battery Superstore" sells. Reviews that mention Battery Superstore seem to be lower than other sellers, so I would recommend being careful about who you buy this from.Overall, I am very pleased with this... 5/5 Brian D. BEWARE OF BATTERY WAREHOUSE, THEY ARE SELLING GENERIC BATTERIES!

I was a little skeptical when I saw that Battery Warehouse was selling this battery for $41, when even Amazon.com is selling it for $63.47, and some vendors sell it for as much $90, but I went ahead and took a chance with Battery Warehouse on the battery. What a mistake that was. When I received my battery and opened it up, I immediately noticed that the sticker indicating that the battery was indeed iRobot genuine was missing. I called Battery Warehouse to inquire if this was a real iRobot battery, and they assured me that it was, but I still had second thoughts about it.After a call to iRobot, we determined that this was in fact a generic battery that was NOT made by iRobot. I was also told that using this battery in my Roomba would void my warranty!Battery Warehouse refused to allow me to return this, so I had to get Amazon to give me an A2Z refund on it. The Tenergy replacement battery that I purchased worked well for 7 months and then failed. Unfortunately, the warranty is only for 6 months. Beware of Metapo

My Metapo Scooba battery performed well until two weeks before the warranty expired, when it died. I contacted Metapo by phone and they were VERY reluctant to take any action. First they indicated that I should wait two weeks and file a claim under the extended warranty that I had purchased. I said no, I had already contacted the extended warranty company and they said that it was Metapo's responsibility. Then Metapo argued about the actual length of the warranty. Finally they wanted copies of my purchase receipt and original warranty. I immediately emailed these documents to them. A month has passed and I've never heard from them again. If you buy the battery, you can expect to have to buy another one when it quits because if my experience is any indication of the integrity of this company, there will be no manufacturer support for any problems that you may have. 2/5 J. This battery may not be made by iRobot with the Scooba "stamp" on the battery, but it works just the same and for much less the cost! That is the kind of value I'm talking about! Shipping was fast and product is great! PERFECT business transaction, where everyone is happy. 5/5 K. COGGINS "DarnRedhead" (Tampa, FL) - See all my reviews, June 25, 2010

    Great Substitute

We have owned our Scooba for three years and absolutely love our Scooba. Even though I love my Scooba I hate the battery because of its short life and how expensive it is to replace. I have ordered several replacement batteries from iRobot but had gotten frustrated with the amount of money we were spending on replacement batteries. I decided to take a chance on this replacement battery and I have been very happy that I did. The battery is only a fraction of the cost of the battery sold by iRobot but seems to work at least as well and maybe better. I have had the battery for almost 5 months and it is still working great. One issue that I have seen raised related to this battery which I think may be in error is related to its larger size which allegedly causes Scooba to not seal properly causing Scooba to not suck up the water from the floor. After I got this battery I thought I was having this issue because my Scooba was not sucking up water from the floor. I measured... 5/5 Richard W. Spengler - See all my reviews, February 15, 2011

    Pleasantly surprised!

Frankly, I was hesitant to order this because there weren't many reviews and replacement batteries from another vendor can sometimes be a little sketchy in my limited experience. The price made it worth trying for me, and I'm very pleased. The battery fits in my Roomba Sage perfectly, and it charged with no problem. It's been running for a while now doing the first cleaning (hooray for getting housework done while I'm on the computer). I'm happy! 5/5 J. Try this before ordering a new battery

Your Roomba may be experiencing an issue where the battery is deeply discharged and may need to charge longer than the standard 2.5 hours. (or 6 hours if you have a standard charger)If you have fully charged your Battery (the Roomba Power light is solid green) and it charging time was short (less than 20 minutes) and its run time was short (less than 20 minutes) you will need to do the following.Reset the Roomba charging system. Do this by removing the Battery and holding down the "power" button for at least 5 seconds. Then reinstall the Battery.Plug the Charger into Roomba (avoid using the Home Base if you have one so as to ensure the Roomba's charging cycle is not interrupted.)Charge the Battery until the Roomba Power light is solid green and keep the Roomba on the Charger for an additional 72 hours (3 days). Note: Do not interrupt this charging cycle. In Max mode, run the Roomba for one complete cycle without a Home Base... 4/5 kensmiles - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Roomba APS 4905 Battery (Kitchen) Your Roomba may be experiencing an issue where the battery is deeply discharged and may need to charge longer than the standard 2.5 hours. Not an authentic iRobot brand battery

I just received this order and discovered that, despite the deceptive photo for the product description, this is a generic replacement and not an authentic iRobot brand battery. I have not yet tested it to see how well it performs; but I am quite upset with the deceptive product description. Now that I read the reviews others have written, I find several reviews that point out that this is a generic brand battery-- I wish I had read those more carefully before buying this battery. There are several other companies selling aftermarket batteries for the Roomba on Amazon. I have no idea if they are better or worse than this one-- but several are cheaper and clearly identify themselves as aftermarket, 3rd party batteries. I decided to pay a little bit more for this battery because I thought I was getting an iRobot brand battery. So, if you are considering buying this battery hopefully you read these reviews more carefully than I did and know ahead of time what you... 1/5 Scott A. Really does hold a charge better than original.

The original was fine, but unimpressive, generally. My initial battery died pretty quickly, going from over an hour, to around 15 minutes, to under... anyway, after a few charges and discharges, this lasts considerably longer than the original. It does what it's sold to do. Half the reviewers are rating Amazon's ability to ship the battery on time, somehow... mine arrived in 2 days (prime).Good price, good product. 5/5 nobaboon "nobaboon" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Did Not Fit Right, Did not Last

Bought one of these back in October. Charged it when I got the battery, and it worked fine. Then the Scooba was parked for several months with the battery removed. Started using the Scooba again a month ago. Everything fine. Used Scooba 3 times, Now the battery will not charge. Only 6 month warranty on Battery. I will buy my next one from iRobot. Learned my lesson. Oh and the battery does not want to stay snapped in either. You can also tell it is lower quality than iRobot's battery. The battery contacts are flimsy etc.. 1/5 G. Works like the manufacturer's battery

I bought this battery for my Scooba after the warranty expired, because I figured that it would probably invalidate the warranty. This battery works as advertised.I have only one issue -- it doesn't seat quite as well as the original battery, and it might be very slighty larger. Be extra careful when you install it. I wasn't, and the battery got stuck in the Scooba tank; it was hard to open the Scooba and get it straightened out. But no problems since then. 4/5 Lisa Guinn "lisle_g" (Cupertino, CA USA) - See all my reviews, April 27, 2009
