Robotics, a reference guide to the new technology

Creator: Joseph A. Angelo | Technology & Engineering - 2007

To date, the company has sold more than 1.5 million RoombaR Vacuuming Robots worldwide. In May 2005, iRobot introduced the ScoobaTM Floor Washing Robot—the world's first floor washing robot available for home use.

Publisher: Greenwood Pub Group

About this book
Although advanced technologies are the cornerstone of modern life, few people understand how such technologies as robotics or nuclear science actually work. Fewer still realize how--and how dramatically--technology influences our society and culture. Robotics is a reference guide that provides nonspecialists with the most up-to-date information on seminal developments in the technology of robotics, as well as covering the social, political, and technical impacts of those developments on everyday life, both now and in the future. Included in Robotics are chapters on: BL Profiles of Robot Technology Pioneers, Visionaries, and Advocates. BLHow robot technology works. BLImpact of Robotics on broader society. BL Controversial issues involving robotic technology. BL The future of robotic technology. The volume includes a chronology of the technology, a glossary, organizations involved in robotics, and a thorough list of sources for further research.

Publisher: Chapman & Hall

About this book
The Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio (MSRDS) and LEGO robots together offer a flexible platform for creating robotic systems. Designed for novices with basic programming skills, Robot Development Using Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio provides clear instructions on developing and operating robots. It includes an extensive array of examples, with corresponding step-by-step tutorials and explanations. The first several chapters of the book introduce the development environment of MSRDS, including concurrency and coordination runtime (CCR), decentralized software services (DSS), visual simulation environment (VSE), and the Microsoft Visual Programming Language (MVPL). The text then covers the inputs and outputs to the robot and control logic and describes how MSRDS can be used to control a LEGO robot 's hearing and vision. It also presents a real-life example involving a sumo robot contest. The final chapter provides information on related academic courses, websites, and books. The top-down approach used in this text helps readers think of a robot as a system rather than an assemblage of parts. Readers gain an understanding of methods for integration, design trade-offs, and teamwork all essential skills for building robots. The MSRDS codes for all examples are available at http: //msrds.caece.net/

    Fantastic cleaning robot!

I must say, I'm impressed with the mapping system on this little guy. I have a very large (20'X20') open living room/kitchen area giving plenty of obstacles to confuse it. There's a staircase (which it deftly avoids), an island, a kitchen table with chairs, a couch and a number of tables for it to go under, an area rug and a piece of curved beveled glass on the floor that serves as a stand for a fireplace (which it surprisingly does not ride up on). Also, the room is overall "U" shaped with several entryways. This is the only robotic cleaner that has been able to figure this room out in its entirety. Other things to note is the room has a large fan and high, sloped ceilings and it can still find it's way.My Roomba did terribly. It would get stuck in one section, the Neato XV was OK but would miss some parts. This thing does a great job of freshening up the floor and getting at just about everything due to it's small size! One thing I did not know is the Mint... 5/5 Ryan Mckenney - See all my reviews, September 9, 2010

Mint v Roomba: Which is hte Better Sucker

The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. But at the end of the day, the Roomba is the better product and picked up a LOT more pet hair. Here's the longer version with the gory details:Both of these are great innovations. True, the Mint is far quieter, cheaper and cooler looking than the Roomba. It is also easier/cheaper to maintain. But the Roomba gets more dust off the floor, despite the fact that the Mint can get under places Roomba can not, and Roomba returns to its base for a re-charge on it's own, as needed. The Mint just dies in place. The guy on here who's review said that he sent his Roomba on a mission and then sent the Mint after it to discover dirt the Roomba missed, would have had the same result if he performed the experiment in reverse. I know b/c I did just that. these two devices clean differently, so any comparison is useless... 2/5 dusthater - See all my reviews This review is from: Evolution Robotics Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200 (Kitchen) The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. Beware False Hopes

First: notice the 5-star rating that I have given this.I agree with all of the 5-star reviewers: this product is worth the price (have had it about 6 weeks now). I have used it on vinyl (Congoleum/linoleum) floors, tile floors and wooden floors. It works well on all of them. Time will tell more. However, rather than repeat what others have said, I will describe some aspects that might disappoint you when/if you buy it, but these do not outweigh the benefits.- This does NOT do a deep clean. That takes elbow grease and this, naturally, is not heavy enough to scrub that well (you wouldn't want it to be that heavy). You will have to do a deep clean first. The Mint will then maintain that clean floor. I use it about once a week.- The designers did a generally good job, except for the week when they all took vacation at once and let the janitor decide where to put the charging port. Not bad on my linoleum & hardwood floors.

It meets the 80/20 rule. It does 80% of the work that you would do if you did a thorough, good clean yourself. However, I usually don't do a thorough good clean myself on mopping floors since I left the navy.obviously, make sure that your floor is swept before starting Scooba. (I use my Roomba since I am doubly lazy..) Scooba won't get into the corners, but neither do I when I mop. The point is.. I don't like mopping. Neither does my wife. The hardwood floors never get mopped. I have a dog & 2 cats. Thus, the kitchen floor always looks like &*$(#! most of the time. Now it doesn't. It looks great. I'd suggest it for people that hate mopping & just want someone (or thing) to do it..The first time I had scooba clean, it ran, but no water came out, and ittold me to check the tank, so i fiddled with it (pulled it apart & put it together again) and it worked. perhaps I didn't put the little rubber tube in right or didn't snap things together right the... 4/5 Kevin Gabbert (Salem, OR) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2006

Very pleased with robot and customer service

I was impressed with the ease in which the Scooba operates. Every part is clearly marked on the machine and the directions are uncomplicated. The first time I used my Scooba, it started out working fine. But then the "Check Tank" light came on without any apparent reason. I opened and closed the tank, making sure it was securely locked and it started right up again. I left the room and, when I returned after the cycle was completed, the floor was VERY wet. When I emptied the dirty tank, there was barely any water in it! It was obvious that the vaccum system that squeeges the floor and sucks the dirty water back into the machine wasn't working properly. I called Customer Service and they were very helpful and immediately sent out a replacement part at no charge to me.Actually, it turned out that the machine was working fine. When I opened and closed the tank, the vaccum portal had some water around the opening and didn't seal properly when the machine started up... 5/5 Grace K. Absolutely Worth the Money

I have two children (1 and 10 year old boys) and three large dogs (great dane, mastiff, and shar pei), needless to say keeping floors clean is a struggle. I also happen to have an obsession with clean floors.Every floor in my home is hardwood. I run it twice a day (once per level) and now all of my belongings are no longer covered in dog hair and I can walk around in bare feet without feeling yucky. If it only went up and down steps it would be perfect!Another bonus side effect is that, when you run it every day, it keeps all that dust and dirt from just floating around your house and clinging to other stuff so I have to clean less often in general.I suppose if I got out a bucket, sponge and set of knee pads I could do a better job but really who needs that in thier life? I do suggest moving or stacking things like dining room chairs as the scooba'll get all tangled up in the legs and shut off.The only annoying thing was, when I... 5/5 Marlee (Cleveland Heights, OH United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 330 Scooba Floor-Washing Robot (Kitchen) I have two children (1 and 10 year old boys) and three large dogs (great dane, mastiff, and shar pei), needless to say keeping floors clean is a struggle. Does a good job, not perfect

We've been using one of these beasts for about a year now and I have few complaints. It's not perfect but it does a good job. It and a regular Roomba 420 clean our floors well and manage to keep a large kitchen, den, breakfast room area clean even with two kids and a dog running in and out of them all day.To address some of the specific points in other reviews:1) if it's leaving a large amount of water behind something is set up wrong. Try pulling the squeegee tight so that it is completely straight, or perhaps replacing the cleaning unit;2) we use vinegar on our hardwood floors with no problem. We use the cleaning solution only on the marble floors;3) if the battery is running out before cleaning is complete the battery needs to be replaced. Ours always empties the tank completely;4) yes, the multi pin plug is a pain to connect, it takes at least 3 seconds to orient properly...My only complaint, and the... 4/5 PDH - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Scooba 380 Floor Washing Robot (Misc.) OK, let me address some common complaints

So far I'm very satisfied with mine. I have "whole house" ceramic tile and there's no way I was going to mop every day. This is much easier than mopping.Let me address some common complaints I've read about the Scooba (any model):1. "It makes noise." Yes, it does. Most floor cleaning machines (vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, etc) do.2. "It leaves water streaks on the floor." Yes, but nowhere near as much as a mop does, and it dries much quicker than if you had used a mop.3. "It doesn't do the corners". No, because it's round; you'll need to take a swiffer to the corners afterward.4. "It gets stuck." It can; it's best to do one "zone" at a time, and move small pieces of furniture, such as dining room chairs, out of that zone before you set the scooba. You would probably do that anyway if you were mopping, right?5. "It's gross to clean." Yes, it is; your floor was very dirty.6. "It... 5/5 K. Robertson - See all my reviews, June 21, 2011

Cleans well, but has some flaws

The Scooba cleans very well. I tried it right after the housekeeper finished mopping the floor, just for the fun of it,and the dirty water came out gray. Imagine if the floor hadn't been already mopped! On the veranda, there was about half inch of dirt where the floor meets the wall. It's been there for 5 years, since I moved into my new house. I tried many times to manually scrub it, but it wouldn't go away. The first day I got scooba I let it run 2 cycles on the veranda.Guess what- the dirt is almost completely gone! A couple of more cycles and the tiles will look as they did the first day I moved in!However, there are some flaws with this machine:1. The clean water tank takes little water, and the Scooba stops in the middle of the cycle asking you to check its tank, so you need to add more clean water. To get an idea, it runs out of water after 30 minutes, the cycle lasts 40-45 min, and the battery lasts about 70 minutes.2. The battery lasts enough... 3/5 Reviewer - See all my reviews The Scooba cleans very well. Does not work on tile floors

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:57 MinsThis robot does NOT work on tile floors.Tile floors becomes slippery when wet, so the robot just spins its wheels.Another problem is that its bumper does not react to obstacles too well, so in addition to half the time stuck in the middle of the room (because of traction problems), it spends another half of the time against the wall. Maybe 10% of the time is spent actually cleaning. That puts a lot of load on tires, so I expect this to get worse over time. Wheel-spinning also confuses its cleaning algorithm, because the robot "thinks" it is moving in a straight line all this time.I did not return this robot right away. I tried using it in different conditions: I thought of maybe keeping it, but a couple of months later it was clear that I can't use it like this, so I contacted iRobot Customer Service. Now iRobot Customer Service...After learning that this has been happening since day one, iRobot... 1/5 online shopper - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Scooba 230 + Essentials Kit Robotic Vacuum (Kitchen), December 3, 2011

not as impressive as iRobot's roomba but still usefull

I use the scooba 230 in combination with a roomba 555 (which is more or less the European version of the American 560 model). The roomba is scheduled to wipe the floors of my complete flat three times a week. Unless the roomba I don't use the scooba to mop my whole place at once. Generally I use it to mop the most trafficked parts. I let it mop the bathroom (small tiles) and the place behind the kitchen counter (PVC), each in the short mopping cycle, and the hallway (large tiles) in the full mopping cycle every week. And I guess that's what it is designed to do. If you think you can use it like a roomba or the bigger scooba models to take care of your complete house in one run, you'll be probably disappointed. Some say the scooba 230 leaves streaks behind, this problem is solved by using only half of the recommended amount of cleaning solution. It carries only about half the amount of water than the big scoobas, so why should it need the same amount of cleaning solution? ..in spite of the poor reviews. First, let me say where I'm coming from so you can tell if this will apply to you. I hate mopping floors. Pleased with Verro 300

I was on the fence about purchasing the IRobot Verro 300 OR the commonly recommended Polaris cleaners. With a $100 off coupon and a 30 day risk free trial, I decided to purchase the Verro 300. We have a large pool (20 x 44)and I was skeptical that this would work. After a couple weeks of using it and at least 3 calls to the technical support line, we decided to keep it and that overall it works very well. Though it isn't written in the manual (I learned this from my phone calls) periodic-filter-bag-cleaning (for my pool anyway) translates to machine wash cleaning after each use. For those of you reading this, buy extra filter bags and keep one clean at all times ready to go. I found the hose method of cleaning the filter bag doesn't work. Instead, I rinse the bag out with the hose and then I run it through the washing machine on the delicate cycle in cold water. It works great--climbs the walls to the tile line and gets both the deep and shallow end of my pool. Each time I use... 4/5 S. Works good enough

I decided to try the Verro 300. It did a superb job on most of the pool, but some areas were a problem for it.Verro is a simple device. It has a long floating electrical cord that powers a vacuum pump that sucks water through a filter bag. The water is expelled out at the top horizontally which propels it around the pool. One wheel axle swivels a bit so it doesn't always travel a straight line. A power unit sits outside the pool, tells the verro whether to shoot the water out forward or backwards. An adjustment dial allows you to set how long before switching directions. There are two filter bags that come with the verro. A coarse mesh filter bag and a fine cloth filter bag. And the performance with each differs greatly. The coarse mesh filter bag with it's tiny holes will pick up leaves but it won't pick up fine dirt. That's what you need the fine cloth filter bag for. With the mesh filter bag, the verro does a good job traveling all over the pool... 4/5 Thomas in LA - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) One wheel axle swivels a bit so it doesn't always travel a straight line. With the mesh filter bag, the verro does a good job traveling all over the pool... iRobot Verra - Very good overall

I was looking for an automatic pool cleaner that didn't require hoses and potential clogging of the filter. This fit the bill. As a happy customer of Roomba, I decided to give this a try vs other competing products (e.g., Aquabot). Overall, the device performed very well - It got up all the debris including sand and small stones. My only slight negative is that it had a tendency to orient itself to clean more on the deep end than the shallow end, meaning that I had to run it on a few two hour cycles to get the pool fully covered. Also, in five cleanings so far it got stuck once on my staircase steps, but that might be an artifact of my pool design. Overall, however, so far I am very happy. 4/5 A. Fun product, has limitations.

It does a nice job mopping flat sealed surfaces, as long as you "scooba-proof" the room first. I did find that you can't let it roam around rooms as large as those you can let the Roomba go in, as Scooba does need to go over the same spot a few times to really get it clean, and also as the cycle is only 45 minutes. I also found that it can be much more temperamental than I expected, stopping mid-clean because it got stuck in a transition area (like between tile and wood), stuck on a flat rug it didn't detect, didn't like the amount of cleaner you put in, or needs the dirty water and filter's checked. I've also found it doesn't always obey the virtual walls. Unlike the Roomba, there is no mechanism for it to clean corners, so those you have to manually mop. It sucks up most of the water, leaving the floor in a damp-dry state - I read people saying the floor is dry, but that has never been the case with mine. Because you're stuck with only using the Clorox cleaner (which is pretty... 4/5 Jase T. Wolfe - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Best thing since sliced bread

I've had my Scooba for about a month now and have been running it almost every day. I LOVE it. It gets my floors cleaner that I have ever been able to get them with a broom and mop. It was able to get up fine construction dust after our remodel that I could not clean up any other way. It cleans both my hardwood floors and my tile floors with grout. It scrubs the grout! No more scrubbing on my hands and knees! And it vaccuums up dust bunnies, pet hair, etc.--you don't have to sweep the floors before using it. In fact, I DON'T SWEEP MY FLOORS AT ALL ANYMORE! Wow, I'm in love!

Please click "See all customer images" at the top of the page to see all of the detailed pictures I submitted of my Scooba.Opening the Scooba box, I could see that this robot was much more complex than the vacuuming robots (I own the Dirt Dog and Red Roomba).Scooba is the same width and height as its brothers, Dirt Dog and Roomba, but it weighs a tiny bit more. The Scooba is easy to open, the handle doubles as a latch to flip up the tanks and makes you feel like you're popping the hood of a car. The tanks separate from the Scooba so you can fill and empty them. One tank is labeled "clean", the other "dirty". You fill the "clean" tank with the Clorox solution and cold or warm water and when the Scooba is done cleaning, you will find all the gross dirty stuff that it mopped up in the "dirty" tank.Scooba warns you to only use the Clorox solution it came with as other solutions might corrode the moving parts of Scooba. very very disappointing

wow, what a load of rubbish. for the amount of money they charge this is absolutely not worth it.followed all the instructions, fully charged the unit, filled the clean tank as required. cleared my bathroom floor (tiled). Powered on and clicked go.it would not go. followed troubleshooting tips, tried again, still would not go. tried a third time and gave it a little nudge and presto it started! whooo hooo I thought.a few minutes later, it stopped, same error as before. now i'm wiser, i gave a it a nudge and it resumed.then 5 minutes later it stopped again, this time a different warning light - one about the wheels being stuck, followed the troubleshooting guide again, - could not clear the error, - none of the wheels were stuck. had to power down powering down meant the unit had to restart the whole cleaning cycle again.five minutes later, got the same wheel stuck error. battery end up dying room did not get cleaned - the... 1/5 Christopher Rush "Chris Rush" (Long Beach, CA) - See all my reviews, November 12, 2011

    Very Nice!

I had an older version of the Scooba that worked pretty well. The new series is even better. It does a reasonable job at cleaning - not as good as by hand, but MUCH better than me not doing it at all and sitting on the couch. All in all, a nice (though pricey) device for something looking to automate a chore they'd prefer not to do themselves, or otherwise nice for people who need to clean often (e.g. kids, pets, etc.). Just make sure to use it fairly often (few times a month), otherwise the batteries start to lose their ability to hold a charge. 5/5 James - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot Scooba 385 Floor Washing Robot (Kitchen) I had an older version of the Scooba that worked pretty well. Best Christmas gift to myself- EVER

LOVE IT!! I have a six month old bullmastiff puppy who tracks in mud/dirt/rain/snow all day long. I can put her down for a nap, run "Alfred" and the mess is gone in no time. We have two different types of hardwood floors as well as textured tile. This is essentially a Swiffer on steroids. It does not get the textured tile scrubbed, but it does get the surface grime gone. Run it once with the dry cloth (got all the dustbunnies from under the couch), then load the scrubbing pad with whatever you normally use to clean your floor- vinegar and water, Bona, Armstrong, Mr. Clean, whatever. Turn on the mop feature and off it goes. About half way through the cycle, I remove the pad (it just pops off held in place with magnets, takes all of 15 seconds) and turn it the other direction, which gets both sides of the cloth working. It is is sooo quite!I've had no problem with it finding the cube, it covers most of the floor, it occasionally misses some spots, but... 5/5 T. A definite must with a full house of boys and pets!

First let me start off by saying we have a family of 3 very active boys and 3 very active dogs. Needless to say I cannot keep up with every drop of something that gets on the floor. That's where this little miracle comes in!!I couldn't be happier with the Mint Plus. I didn't purchase this one with the charging cradle, however I did purchase the turbo charger separately. Still waiting for that to come in so i will update my review after I use it! It comes with a mop pad and a dry pad. I didn't know that when I bought it so I also purchased the set of 3 (2 dry, 1 wet) for $19.95 so now I'll never run out I guess! It was so easy to set up and get started. It did take 4 hours for the initial charge, however it lasted for over 2 hours going non stop! (and it was in a large area) It evens comes with an easy set-up instruction card. I'm usually horrible when it comes to electronics and I figured it out with no problems! I was kind of skeptical at first with running... 5/5 boys, boys, boys - See all my reviews This review is from: Mint Plus Automatic Floor Cleaner with Charging Cradle - Model 5200C (Kitchen) First let me start off by saying we have a family of 3 very active boys and 3 very active dogs. I've got a new best friend!

Just got my Mint Plus less than an hour ago. Can't say much yet as it's charging. It's packaged extremely well and every part is labeled very clearly and easy to understand in the packing. Very little packaging too! I wish everyone took a chapter from Mints book on using little and smart packaging. My main point to review this before I've used it is to warn before you buy extra cleaning clothes for it the box came w/ a total of 4.2 dusting and 2 mopping. Overpriced

The cleaner is fine - but (at the time of this review) the single unit purchase price is much higher than if you purchased it from the iRobot site (where you can buy it in multi-unit packs). I'm sure this price reflects that you're purchasing cleaner from a specialty store (thus far I've seen it sold from The Sharper Image as well as a music store - not Amazon directly). 3/5 Jase T. Beware!

I have no problem with the product which I have used for years. My problem with this purchase is with the seller. I start all my online shopping at Amazon as I have never had a bad experience with anything purchased through Amazon.com. This was major exception. I spent $49.00 for this purchase assuming that it was for 6 bottles of solution as that is what I had previously paid for the product through other sources. Imagine my surprise when my order arrived and contained only one bottle! After looking for a second shipment, I rechecked my order and discovered that the seller had sent exactly what they had advertised. It was my mistake to assume that the price that had previously been charged for one case would now be charges for 1 bottle. I was so comfortable with my Amazon experience, I forgot to be very careful in my purchase. Won't make that mistake again. I was able to send the order back, but it cost me shipping and handling. I hope that Amazon will be more careful in... 1/5 Marjorie Crowe "Momof7" (Eureka, IL United States) - See all my reviews, November 19, 2010
