Building Robots With Lego Mindstorms

Creator: Mario Ferrari, Giulio Ferrari, Ralph Hempel | Technology & Engineering - 2002-01-05

Though these robots may be simple, they have their merits in applying some of the concepts discussed in Part I and in introducing some new ideas. For example, the Floor Sweeper covers room navigation, suggesting approaches that refer to ...

About this book
Lego robots! Mindstorms are sweeping the world and fans need to learn how to programme them Lego Mindstorms are a new generation of Lego Robots that can be manipulated using microcomputers, light and touch sensors, an infrared transmitter and CD-ROMs. Since Lego launched Lego Mindstorms in late 1998 sales have skyrocketed - with no sign of slowing down. Mindstorms have captured the imagination of adults and children alike, creating a subculture of Mindstorm enthusiasts around the world. The kits are now a staple part of engineering and computer science classes at many high profile Universities. Building Robots with Lego Mindstorms provides readers with a fundamental understanding of the geometry, electronics, engineering, and programming required to build your own robots. Mario and Giulio Ferrari are world-renowned experts in the field of Lego Mindstorms robotics, and in this book they share their unrivaled knowledge and expertise of robotics as well as provide a series of chapters detailing how to design and build the most exotic robots. Mario and Giulio also give detailed explanations of how to integrate Lego Mindstorms kits with other Lego programmable bricks such asScout and Cybermaster, as well as with non-robotic Lego Technics models.

    Fantastic cleaning robot!

I must say, I'm impressed with the mapping system on this little guy. I have a very large (20'X20') open living room/kitchen area giving plenty of obstacles to confuse it. There's a staircase (which it deftly avoids), an island, a kitchen table with chairs, a couch and a number of tables for it to go under, an area rug and a piece of curved beveled glass on the floor that serves as a stand for a fireplace (which it surprisingly does not ride up on). Also, the room is overall "U" shaped with several entryways. This is the only robotic cleaner that has been able to figure this room out in its entirety. Other things to note is the room has a large fan and high, sloped ceilings and it can still find it's way.My Roomba did terribly. It would get stuck in one section, the Neato XV was OK but would miss some parts. This thing does a great job of freshening up the floor and getting at just about everything due to it's small size! One thing I did not know is the Mint... 5/5 Ryan Mckenney - See all my reviews, September 9, 2010

Mint v Roomba: Which is hte Better Sucker

The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. But at the end of the day, the Roomba is the better product and picked up a LOT more pet hair. Here's the longer version with the gory details:Both of these are great innovations. True, the Mint is far quieter, cheaper and cooler looking than the Roomba. It is also easier/cheaper to maintain. But the Roomba gets more dust off the floor, despite the fact that the Mint can get under places Roomba can not, and Roomba returns to its base for a re-charge on it's own, as needed. The Mint just dies in place. The guy on here who's review said that he sent his Roomba on a mission and then sent the Mint after it to discover dirt the Roomba missed, would have had the same result if he performed the experiment in reverse. I know b/c I did just that. these two devices clean differently, so any comparison is useless... 2/5 dusthater - See all my reviews This review is from: Evolution Robotics Mint Automatic Hard Floor Cleaner, 4200 (Kitchen) The short version, for those reading many reviews quickly is this; the Mint has many advantages over the Roomba on a feature for feature basis. Beware False Hopes

First: notice the 5-star rating that I have given this.I agree with all of the 5-star reviewers: this product is worth the price (have had it about 6 weeks now). I have used it on vinyl (Congoleum/linoleum) floors, tile floors and wooden floors. It works well on all of them. Time will tell more. However, rather than repeat what others have said, I will describe some aspects that might disappoint you when/if you buy it, but these do not outweigh the benefits.- This does NOT do a deep clean. That takes elbow grease and this, naturally, is not heavy enough to scrub that well (you wouldn't want it to be that heavy). You will have to do a deep clean first. The Mint will then maintain that clean floor. I use it about once a week.- The designers did a generally good job, except for the week when they all took vacation at once and let the janitor decide where to put the charging port. Very Disappointing

This little vacuum could not handle our floors! We have cement floors, with a few very thin and flat, antique Oriental rugs scattered here and there. The robot vacuum kept getting hung up on the almost microscopic distance between the rugs and the floor. Whether it was trying to go up, ON to a rug from the cement, or go down, OFF of a rug back onto the cement, 9 times out of 10, or more, it would hang, and then stall, and then STOP. Maddening.Yes, it is loud, but that didn't matter, it probably isn't much louder than most regular vacuum cleaners. Yes, when it wasn't hung up on something, it was very slow moving across the floor, but that was alright too -- I figure that the slower a vacuum goes across the floor, the more thoroughly it is getting it clean. And besides, who cares how long it takes, if I'm not the one having to do the work?If only this thing could have managed to actually clean the floor more than a few tiny itty bitty INCHES at a time without... 1/5 Lady Quixote (Southwest, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: iTouchless Robotic Intelligent Vacuum Cleaner PRO (Kitchen) This little vacuum could not handle our floors! It doesnt work on carpet.

I received this item last week. After fully charging it, i found out it doesnt work on carpet. My carpet is ordinary one. It works 2 seconds on carpet, but works well on hardwood floor. If you want to use it on hard floor, it will be OK. But not on carpet at all. 1/5 S. Works good so far

I've been using this twice a day for the 5 days that I've had it, and few complaints so far. The run time is around 6 hours on max clean, it does a through job of picking up debris, and it is not too loud.Sometimes during cleaning it gets stuck under furniture and will shut off. You will want to be sure to pick up things off the floor before hand to reduce this problem. The machine is easy to clean and care for, and I find it needs to be emptied after each use.I live with 5 dogs in my home, and this is a great solution for me! 4/5 Emily F. Does what it claims

I bought the RoboMaid because the tile floors would get dusty easily, and sweeping or vacuuming was an almost daily activity. Firstly, the unit does feel quite cheap, but nothing breaks easily. It does everything it says, no more, no less. It picked up just about the same amount of dust from the floor as a regular vacuum cleaner. Remember, the device is for dust only or other relatively small particles. The pad may need changing for fairly big or very dusty rooms and especially if it's more than one room. Unfortunately the pads aren't very cheap either, which probably is my biggest gripe, considering how often you will have to replace them. It doesn't detect edges which lead to drops so if you want to stop it from going down the stairs or a similar area you will have to block the edges. The unit is also noiser than I expected, but obviously not nearly as noisy as a regular vacuum cleaner. Another relatively small problem is the battery. A 3-5 hour charage only runs the device for... 4/5 RazrElite (Florida, US) - See all my reviews This review is from: RoboMaid Floor Sweeper (Kitchen) I bought the RoboMaid because the tile floors would get dusty easily, and sweeping or vacuuming was an almost daily activity. if you have wood floors it's a must.

I bought it skeptically. It is really a time saver. Only problem it does not do corners and is made of light weight plastic. It picked up dust and dog hair, even if it gets caught on something it rolls it's way free. The replacement pads can only be circles,so swifter sheets won't work, if you throw out the order form for replacements you are out of luck. 4/5 short cut mom (nyc) - See all my reviews This review is from: RoboMaid Floor Sweeper (Kitchen) I bought it skeptically. Pleased with Verro 300

I was on the fence about purchasing the IRobot Verro 300 OR the commonly recommended Polaris cleaners. With a $100 off coupon and a 30 day risk free trial, I decided to purchase the Verro 300. We have a large pool (20 x 44)and I was skeptical that this would work. After a couple weeks of using it and at least 3 calls to the technical support line, we decided to keep it and that overall it works very well. Though it isn't written in the manual (I learned this from my phone calls) periodic-filter-bag-cleaning (for my pool anyway) translates to machine wash cleaning after each use. For those of you reading this, buy extra filter bags and keep one clean at all times ready to go. I found the hose method of cleaning the filter bag doesn't work. Instead, I rinse the bag out with the hose and then I run it through the washing machine on the delicate cycle in cold water. It works great--climbs the walls to the tile line and gets both the deep and shallow end of my pool. Each time I use... 4/5 S. Works good enough

I decided to try the Verro 300. It did a superb job on most of the pool, but some areas were a problem for it.Verro is a simple device. It has a long floating electrical cord that powers a vacuum pump that sucks water through a filter bag. The water is expelled out at the top horizontally which propels it around the pool. One wheel axle swivels a bit so it doesn't always travel a straight line. A power unit sits outside the pool, tells the verro whether to shoot the water out forward or backwards. An adjustment dial allows you to set how long before switching directions. There are two filter bags that come with the verro. A coarse mesh filter bag and a fine cloth filter bag. And the performance with each differs greatly. The coarse mesh filter bag with it's tiny holes will pick up leaves but it won't pick up fine dirt. That's what you need the fine cloth filter bag for. With the mesh filter bag, the verro does a good job traveling all over the pool... 4/5 Thomas in LA - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) iRobot Verra - Very good overall

I was looking for an automatic pool cleaner that didn't require hoses and potential clogging of the filter. This fit the bill. As a happy customer of Roomba, I decided to give this a try vs other competing products (e.g., Aquabot). Overall, the device performed very well - It got up all the debris including sand and small stones. My only slight negative is that it had a tendency to orient itself to clean more on the deep end than the shallow end, meaning that I had to run it on a few two hour cycles to get the pool fully covered. Also, in five cleanings so far it got stuck once on my staircase steps, but that might be an artifact of my pool design. Overall, however, so far I am very happy. 4/5 A. Eats Up Batteries While Leaving Dirt

This cheapo sweeper pushes some dirt around and moves in little circles like a toy. It doesn't vacuum and the microfiber cloth it comes with gets dirty really fast. The so-called "sensor" is a joke - it got stuck under the living room couch twice and over a slightly raised bump in the floor. After a so-called "cleaning", I still had to sweep because it failed to pick up a lot of pet hair.It eats up 4 AA batteries as quickly as if it was a digital camera. It's yet another wasteful gadget in which buying batteries will end up costing you more than the item itself! A waste of money. No wonder the real robot vacuums cost $100 or more. 1/5 VIDFAN "specfellow" (Astoria, NY USA) - See all my reviews, February 21, 2012

I love this vac! I let it charge for the three hours and turned it on for it's madden voyage - SUCCESS! It got everywhere without an effort and when it drained its energy, it cried out for the docking station and began it's hunt. I watched in "child-like" manner as the little guy spun a couple of times, went straight, spun a couple of times, went straight: After doing this three or four times it finally signalled up with it's better half - spun and zoomed right in for a recharge. I got the biggest kick out of this action and the cleaning it did; I'm well pleased and it was worth every penny. Oh, cleaning the dust tray was unbelievably easy! When it docks, you push the big red button and gently pull: dust tray released, you then take it to the garbage can and empty then pull where it plainly reads "Pull" and the filter area pulls out and you can clean that with a good shake and a blow dryer. Just an awesome, all around, cool machine. My dogs didn't get off the sofa as the... 5/5 Lisa R. Taylor "Lisa R Taylor, Author" (Dothan, Alabama USA) - See all my reviews, February 6, 2012

    OK, not great vacuum

I've used the Roomba 610 and 560. I now have two refurbished 560s in our house, at the same price as one 610. And it's definitely a better value. Before I talk about the 610, let me share what's good and bad about Roombas in general, based on my experience with both the 560s and 610:Pros:- You don't have to vacuum, the Roomba does it for you- Scheduled cleanings so you don't even have to worry about it or be home to hear the noise- Floors stay clean without much effort- One button start it and forget about itCons:- Absolute pain in the butt to clean these things. There's the two brushes, the front wheel, the spinning brush (which requires a screwdriver to remove), and the dust bin. All of these must be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, at least once per cleaning session.- It's not effort free. As I said above, lots to clean, which requires 5-10 minutes each time you want to run the Roomba.- With pets,... 3/5 Roopesh Sheth (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews, November 29, 2009

Great for light upkeep, excellent customer service

We have five pets. Three elderly long haired cats and two large short haired dogs. We recently upgraded to a new home with a cream colored carpet and a mix of tile and linoleum in an open floor plan. What was I thinking? I was thinking I had three days to pick a house for a relocation is what I was thinking! But I digress. The carpet isn't perfect, it's five years old and the previous owners were pet owners too, but I was determined to keep it in good shape.I held out for the professional model despite the difference in price. I figured we had a professional level of hair here. Between one cat whose fur has the texture of cotton candy, another cat whose main hobby is tearing paper apart bit by bit, and the dogs with their rolling around on the floor I needed something that could stand up to the mess. I assumed I would need the larger debris bin to hold all the stuff that comes out of the carpet but actually after a few runs I felt that the smaller one with an air... 5/5 Noelle W Dempsey (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 610 Roomba Professional Series (Kitchen) We have five pets. This thing is great!

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won't clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won't have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can't get to once a month or so. Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something's around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won't get stuck, for instance... 4/5 Unna (NJ United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
