    Cat Health Threats

    Cat Health Threats
Cat Health threats fall into two major categories. Bodily harm from fighting, accidents, or cruel humans is one category. Common illnesses, parasites, and known system weaknesses is the other.

An indoor cat has a huge advantage against the bodily harm threats. A cat that lives outdoors (or ventures out often) is subject to many physical threats. It does depend on the environment, busy suburban areas and rural areas are probably the worst. Quiet neighborhoods, with little traffic and few predators have much less risk.

The same factors have a bearing on the second category too. If a cat is not exposed to other animals or parasites, and receives proper feeding and care the risk for illness and disease is greatly reduced. There still are some natural causes, like kidney problems, that are unavoidable.
Cats are tough little critters. The common tale of a cat having 9 lives is a result of the ability of a cat to survive under the most adverse conditions. A cats natural agility, suspicion of everything, and quick reflexes offer a huge advantage against many physical threats. Cats seem to possess a high survival instinct that serves them well too.

Almost any cat owner can tell a story or two of a harrowing escape by their pet from almost certain disaster. And if youve ever tried to rescue a feral Tom Cat that didnt want to be rescued, you are certainly aware of their ability to defend against or escape capture.

I know from experience that some cats (especially rescued cats) want to go outside. And they will make your life miserable if you dont concede. One solution Ive found is to make an outdoor shelter of some kind (like a portable dog kennel but make sure it has a top of some type) or enclosed area. That way the cat gets to go outside but youve protected them from most threats. Ive even seen people put a cat on a leash but none of my cats would ever allow that to happen.

The number one cat health threat to an indoor cat is getting over weight. The more excess weight, the greater the risk for all types of health issues (just like in people). Controlling the amount and type of food is important to your cats health. Some dry food (helps keep their teeth clean too), some high protein soft food, and a few table scraps are all OK. Its when you give them unlimited amounts of all three that the problems start.

Playing with your cat can be important when it comes to weight issues. Dont let your cat become a couch potato, try to keep them active. A great simple toy such as a stick with a feature tied to a string at the end can provide lots of exercise. Anything that rolls around is a good toy too since most cats will chase it around.

Vaccinations are important and yearly checkups at the Vet can alert you to problems before they become life threatening. Watching your cat for unusual behavior (like not eating or drinking as normal) is important too. Catching any health problems before they become critical can save you lots of frustration and money at the Vet.

Urinary and Kidney infections are common in cats. The most common cause appears to be absorbing too much ash elements from prepared cat food, especially the wet variety. Always check the label on any cat food to check for ash content. I dont know what levels are acceptable, so I avoid any brands with ash.

Another common cause of urinary and kidney problems are minerals that build up and block the urethra tube. I had a cat that constantly had blockage problems until we changed his food and went to filtered water. A simple filter on your faucet can help both you and youre cats from too many minerals in your water. Speaking of water, you should always allow access to clean water, hydration is important to keeping your cat healthy.

Its also recommended that you feed multiple small meals or free feed (cat has 24 hour access to food) than feed one big meal a day. This is true of most animals and people. Small meals are easier to digest and also increase the bodys caloric burn rate, which can help with the weight problems too.

Hookworms, roundworms, and tapeworms are common parasites that present severe health threats to cats. Hookworms are the worst since they live in the intestines and suck blood from the host. Hookworms can cause death from creating severe anemia in very short periods of time. Roundworms will steal nutrients and make the host more susceptible to many illnesses. Tapeworms will consume nutrients and cause rapid weight loss.

Parasites can be visible in fecal matter or be found with blood tests by your Vet. Thats why its good to try and makes sure your cat gets an annual checkup. Or if you notice your cat eating more but not gaining any weight, or becoming listless, you should immediately have your Vet do some fecal and blood tests.

    Dust
    Pollen
    Tobacco Smoke
    Pet Dander
    * from the air that passes through the filter
6x more Effective- than the full size ionic air purifiers**(“Ionic Air Purifiers” or “Other Ionic Towers” refers to Ionic Pro independent 3rd party testing for performance validation.
AHAM Certified- Clean Air Delivery Rate – Most effective for use in small rooms up to 8′ x 8′. Verified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers to meet strict room air cleaning standards. Room size: small (up to 60 sq.ft) 5 air changes per hour, medium (up to 145 sq.ft) 2 air changes per hour, large (up to 300 sq.ft) 1 air changes per hour.
People spend 90% of their time inside, and indoor air can be up to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. An easy way to help clean the air you’re breathing is to use an air purifier.***(air circulation depends on many factors, such as room size and configuration, and there is not guarantee that all of the air in a room will pass through the filter)
Compared to full size ionic air purifiers, the filter from the HFD-010 captures 6x more pollutants. These photos (see side box for image) show the results of a filter that has been introduced to common airborne particulates for less than a week. The filter was dipped in clean water to show how much dirt was captured in the air.
Each Honeywell air purifier uses a fan to effectively circulate the air throughout the room, forcing particles through a 3 step filtration system.
How Honeywell units provide advanced air cleaning- this air purifier provides the same air cleaning effectiveness as traditional HEPA filters.***(Note that this model does not contain HEPA filters. It’s performance is equal to HEPA filtration, but uses an ionization process to capture particles. The ifD™ filter helps capture airborne particles that are 2 microns or larger in siz

Eureka 313A Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer

topbook99 Eureka 313A Enviro Hard-Surface Floor Steamer Review.

The top steam mops: Results of steam mop first hand comparisons & studying of comps2009-08-07By A. Chandler (Austin, TX)Know going in If you get the Envirosteamer, know that, though it cleans the best, the first two times you use it the water goes through holes faster than it will in subsequent uses, so it will go through steam faster and your floors will be wetter than normal. Enough people wrote me to know this happened the first one or two times as it did my first time of use, then after that the mop was normal, our floors are great and it lasts waaaah longer. We dont know why. Just know that going in. After the first two initializing uses it steams perfect! Also obviously the steam lasts longest if you dont hold the mop above the floor to walk to another area since the steam pours out as it will with any steam mop if you do.
(update: This review was updated on 11-2-09 after I got to compare the Bissell as well as add notes about the Ladybugg steamer at the bottom, and then on 11-30 when I got to compare the SteamFast SF-140 and on 12-7 to compare the Steam Boy)
I live in a neighborhood where EVERY home is green built certified this means that, to have that certification, the builder built no homes with carpet. All the main floors are polished concrete and the upper floors wood. The bathrooms all have tile and/or slate in every home.
Because of this, as you could imagine, steam mops are quite the neccessitynot only because they get the hard surfaces better than anything else, but because they are also green and clean chemical free. Ill be honest, for usthats a bonus but we werent cleaning chemical free before. We like chemical free for our pets paws but Ill confess I was mopping with chemicals before I got my steamer and just kept the pets out of the room while doing it because, up until then, I couldnt get it clean any other way.
Okay, so that saidwe decided to have a steamer show down to compare 7 different steamers because my friends and I knew as long as we are in these homes we are gonna have to have a steamer to get all these hard floors cleanwe may as well figure out which one to buy next go round. Because my own home is graced with 2 cats, 3 dogs, and two gregarious cooks, my kitchen floor (which had not ever been cleaned by a steamer since my steamer had just arrived) was the testing spot.
Mind you, I vaccuum twice per week and do a mega mop twice a week. I THOUGHT I had pretty clean floors in spite of my pet capacity.
I thought wrong. These picked up dirt so well its scary
    So heres the results:
    1. steam mops are the mac daddys of clean floors. What these things picked up was tremendous and no comparison to my vigorous prior constant major mopping.
    2. So now Ill break down the elements of each mop we used and then go into more detail about each at the end.
    We tried out:
    S: The shark by Europro
    E The Envirosteamer by Eureka
    H the haan steamer
    M the Monster
    B The Bissell Green Tea
SF The SteamFast SF-140 by SteamFast
    SB The SteamBoy T1
CORD LENGTH: so you dont have to stop and unplug and replug in somewhere else:
Shark ( will be referred to as S):20 feet
Envirosteamer (will be referred to as E): 25 feet *Note* The Envirosteamer has a clip at the top of the handle to keep the cord out of the way. When its plugged in and you need more cord length, a light tug undoes this cord on the clip so that you have the full 25 of cord. Otherwise its only around 20 feet. Its made to do this.
Haan: (will be referred to as H)198
Monster (will be referred to as M): 25 feet
Bissell (will be referred to as B) 17 feet
SteamFast (will be referred to as SF): 18.7 ft.
SteamBoy (will be referred to as SB): 16 ft.
STEAM TEMPERATURE: this is a primary element. The hotter the steam, the more dirt picked up and hot steam will also kill parasites, mold and mildew and loosen more dirt:
    S 110 degrees. lame
    E 220 degrees. very hot
    H 212 degrees. very hot
M 266 degrees. hottestalthough the envirosteamer and haan seemed plenty hot enough. The shark didnt clean nearly as well and this was one reason. 110 degrees just isnt going to melt off stuck on grime.
B 125 degrees. Note that, because of this low steam temperature the manual said that if I wanted to sanitize the floor or pick up caked on spills, I had to hold the steamer on the spot for 15 seconds but no more than 20 because that could damage some floors. Now I dont know about you, but if I can sanitize with one swipe of the other steamers because of their sanitizing temps my floor will be done WAY faster but I dont have a timer to worry about the extra 5 secons where my wood floors could get damaged. My sink water is hotter than this so it would take less time to use a regular mop if I have to hold the steamer on every spot of my floor for 15 seconds to santize. Just sayin
SF: 137 degrees. Not hot enough to clean well nor sanitize.
SB: 120 degrees. Not hot enough to clean well nor...

    Best waterer I have purchased

The ERGO automatic filtered pet waterer is the best waterer I have ever purchased. The previous waterer was a Drinkwell Big Dog Waterer. It did not have the capacity the ERGO waterer has which is a big benefit considering I have two labrador retrievers. The ERGO waterer has a prefilter which keeps debris out of the pump. I have owned this waterer for almost a year and am still very satisfied with it. It is very easy to keep clean, much easier than the previous waterer. The pump is adjustable and has lasted longer than the one in the Drinkwell waterer. The only thing is the manual does not tell you to put water in the well were the filter is located. By doing this, the pump is primed much faster, ensuring the water circulates well. A small item compared to all the benefits of this waterer. 5/5 wwcanis - See all my reviews The ERGO automatic filtered pet waterer is the best waterer I have ever purchased. A good product (not to replace human care)

After a month of investigating automated pet feeding and watering devices for my pet cat, I finally selected this two gallon model by Ergo Systems. It was not an easy process, many of the consumer product reviews regarding the various available models seemed to be either plugs or diatribes. Clerks at local pet stores tried to be helpful, but none of the stores I visited carry these devices in stock so close inspection and particular model recommendations were unobtainable. The best they could offer were vendor recommendations based on reputation. I finally made my decision based on design specifications, vendor highlighted features, and the most discernibly objective reviews available. The only criticism I have for this waterer is that it must be taken apart to be properly cleaned but the benefits of providing our cat with running, oxygenated water are worth the minor inconvenience. Disassembly/assembly can be completed by memory after initial assembly. It did take a day... 4/5 tstaton "tstaton" (Lexington, KY United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: Ergo Auto Pet Waterer, Small (Misc.) GOOD PRODUCT GONE BAD

I purchased this product a few of years ago. Initially it seemed to be a good product. It lasted for several months, and then the problems set in.1) The dispensing bowl is attached to the reservoir bowl by two plastic nuts that thread onto two threaded plastic shafts extending from the dispensing bowl. There is also a small plastic tube that extends from the dispensing bowl, and fits into a receptacle in the reservoir bowl body. The tube is sealed to the receptacle by two small recessed O-rings. These O-rings are junk. During assembly the O-rings will twist and bind against each other preventing a good seal. Which in turn, will result in an empty waterer and a flooded floor? - My fix, use a food grade silicone to seal the tube to the receptacle. Problem solved; no big deal.2) The filters that are used with this unit are also complete junk. They are a multi-layered filter, with each layer of filtration "supposedly" providing a beneficial purpose. However, this... 1/5 T. Fogerty (New Mexico) - See all my reviews, December 14, 2010
