About this book
"If you grew up like I did on a steady diet of "The Jetsons," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "Star Wars, " and "The Terminator," then you've been wondering when all your robot fantasies might become true. But unlike promises that every American will own a personal jet pack and hovercraft by now, the proliferation of cyborgs, androids, and avatars is real. With wit and insight, Mark Stephen Meadows separates science fiction from actual fact, navigating the ethically sketchy territory of domestic robots and autonomous military robots, artificial hands and artificial emotions. "We, Robot" raises the crucial questions that robot-makers largely ignore. In doing so, it shows us that in our quest to create more and more lifelike robots, we've become more robotic ourselves." --Ethan Gilsdorf, author of "Fantasy Freaks and Gaming Geeks: An ""Epic Quest for Reality Among Role Players, Online Gamers, ""and Other Dwellers of Imaginary Realms""" Examining our favorite science fiction tales to reveal which robots actually exist today--and what's coming tomorrow "We, Robot" does for robotics what Michio Kaku's bestselling "Physics of the Impossible" has done for physics. How close to becoming reality are our favorite science fiction robots? And what might be the real-life consequences of their existence? Robotics and artificial intelligence expert (and science fiction fan) Mark Stephen Meadows answers that question with an irresistible blend of hard science, futurist imagination, solid statistics, pop culture, and plenty of humor. What exists now? Robots strikingly similar to those in "The Terminator, The Jetsons, "and "2001: A Space Odyssey." Meadows reveals robots that hunt humans, walk your dog, tidy up the house, invest your money, and campaign for your favorite political candidate. What will we see in the coming decade? Robots just like the ones in "Iron Man, Blade Runner, " and "Neuromancer." Readers will learn about the near-future robots who dodge bullets, love you, and get hurt when you don't love them back. What about twenty, thirty, even fifty years from now? Creations like those from "Star Wars," "The Jetsons," "Battlestar Galactica," and "Avatar." Prepare your kids and grandkids for robots that have animal brains or animal bodies, rule the world, govern your city, and demand equal rights!"" Including full-color illustrations of famous science fiction robots, photos of current real robots, and more, "We, Robot" is a must for fans of both science fiction and science fact, as well as anyone with a touch (or more) of geekiness in their past or their present.

    OK, not great vacuum

I've used the Roomba 610 and 560. I now have two refurbished 560s in our house, at the same price as one 610. And it's definitely a better value. Before I talk about the 610, let me share what's good and bad about Roombas in general, based on my experience with both the 560s and 610:Pros:- You don't have to vacuum, the Roomba does it for you- Scheduled cleanings so you don't even have to worry about it or be home to hear the noise- Floors stay clean without much effort- One button start it and forget about itCons:- Absolute pain in the butt to clean these things. There's the two brushes, the front wheel, the spinning brush (which requires a screwdriver to remove), and the dust bin. All of these must be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, at least once per cleaning session.- It's not effort free. As I said above, lots to clean, which requires 5-10 minutes each time you want to run the Roomba.- With pets,... 3/5 Roopesh Sheth (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews, November 29, 2009

Great for light upkeep, excellent customer service

We have five pets. Three elderly long haired cats and two large short haired dogs. We recently upgraded to a new home with a cream colored carpet and a mix of tile and linoleum in an open floor plan. What was I thinking? I was thinking I had three days to pick a house for a relocation is what I was thinking! But I digress. The carpet isn't perfect, it's five years old and the previous owners were pet owners too, but I was determined to keep it in good shape.I held out for the professional model despite the difference in price. I figured we had a professional level of hair here. Between one cat whose fur has the texture of cotton candy, another cat whose main hobby is tearing paper apart bit by bit, and the dogs with their rolling around on the floor I needed something that could stand up to the mess. I assumed I would need the larger debris bin to hold all the stuff that comes out of the carpet but actually after a few runs I felt that the smaller one with an air... 5/5 Noelle W Dempsey (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews This review is from: iRobot 610 Roomba Professional Series (Kitchen) We have five pets. This thing is great!

I got the professional series because I have a family of professional grade mess makers (kids, husband, pets, etc.). I love it! I think when people are dissatisfied with it they do not understand what it is and what it is not. It won't clean up an already neglected floor. You start with clean floors and then push a button everyday and let it run around your house doing upkeep and you won't have to vacuum anything except for behind items it can't get to once a month or so. Before my roomba I vacuumed 2 times a week and still dirt would show up on the bottom of peoples white socks. Since roomba no more dirt!!! It handles the cat fur and it even found an earring I lost over a year ago that must of been hiding someplace. The best part is it can get under things my vacuum never could reach. Yes, you have to know its limitations. It is a programmed device. You have to change something's around your home to work with it. Get wires off the floor so it won't get stuck, for instance... 4/5 Unna (NJ United States) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Fantastic Add On for Roomba

I have a Roomba 581 that runs daily. After only a month, I began to notice areas on my dark furniture legs where the stain was being rubbed off. That would never do, but I sure couldn't give up my Roomba either! I saw other soft bumper products which were made only of a foam type of material. While soft, that material will also rub the finish off furniture. I then came across the Ultra Soft Bumper for Roomba when someone posted about it on a robot forum. I decided to give it a try and what a difference! Roomba is very quiet now, without the bangs I used to hear when bumping things, and my furniture is no longer suffering. The bumper is very soft, dust and fuzz is easily cleaned off, too. I highly recommend getting this if you have a Roomba. I plan on getting another for my 560. Besides this product working so well, the Ultra Soft Bumper is designed to last the lifetime of Roomba. 5/5 Connie (East Stoudsburg, PA) - See all my reviews This review is from: World Famous Ultra Soft Bumper for Roomba, Neato, Mint and Scooba Robotic Vacuums! Prevents my Roomba 610 from Docking

I got this primarily because I feared the Roomba damaging/ scratching the legs of my furniture....as well as keep the Roomba itself scratch free. Well the assembly is pretty straight forward, all you have to do is peel of the adhesive and press it along the edge....be very careful to line the edges up.Well after about a week of finding the Roomba undocked and fully drained, I decided to watch it attempt to dock...it goes up to the docking station, attempts to seat itself and then pulls out and tries again. Maybe it's the 610 model for which it doesn't work, but I tried lining it up again, pressing it harder etc.If looking for a great add-on to prevent the Roomba from getting stock under certain low furniture, I highly recommend the strips. ... 2/5 joegrind "joegrind" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews This review is from: World Famous Ultra Soft Bumper for Roomba, Neato, Mint and Scooba Robotic Vacuums!
