Strategic Management of Innovation and Design

Creator: Pascal Le Masson, Benoît Weil, Armand Hatchuel | Business & Economics - 2010-09-09

In the years that followed, the design community's efforts gave birth to innovative concepts – including a triangular suction head for vacuuming in corners and a new bagless cleaner based on the concept of a worm screw – and helped ...

About this book
"There is now widespread agreement that innovation holds the key to future economic and social prosperity in developed countries. But what kind of innovation is required and what is the best way to manage, steer and organize it? Grounded in the experiences of innovative firms and based on the most recent design theories, this book argues that instead of relying on traditional R&D and project management techniques, the strategic management of innovation must be based on innovative design activities. The authors analyse and explain a range of new management principles and techniques that firms can use to ensure continuous innovation. This book targets advanced courses in innovation management in industrial design schools, business schools, engineering schools, as well as managers looking to improve their practice"--

About this book
The Caspian Sea is the unique natural feature, the world's largest landlocked water body. Historically the Caspian was one of the key zones where interests of such great powers as Russia, Britain and Persia clashed. And the reason is the oil - the "black gold" of the Caspian and also the natural riches of the sea - the sturgeons with their black caviar. With this encyclopedia an attempt was made to show the past and present of the sea where many geopolitical, economic, social and environmental issues are focused and that present interest to the Caspian and other countries of the world. The encyclopedia contains almost 1400 articles and terms providing descriptions of geographical features, cities, ports, main oil and gas fields, biological resources, international treaties, research institutions, activities of prominent scientists, researchers, travelers, military commanders, oil industrialists and traders who had relation to the Caspian Sea. In addition this book gives chronology of the most important events that became milestones in the history of the Caspian region development for more than 300 years.

    This thing sucks

I got this vacuum for thirty bucks so keep that in mind. There are units out there that cost ten times that. So how does the Dynamite Plus stack up? It sucks! Very, very well. I don't think I have ever used a vaccum that had such powerful suction. I bought a Dirt Devil cordless unit (the one that no one seems to like) about a year ago and it was garbage. I wondered if anyone really needed cordless while in the confines of their own home. Most likely not. Why not trade the dubious benefits of cordless for maximum sucking power? For the price there is proably no vacuum made that is more powerful. So why only 4 stars? Despite a vacuum that seems well built, convenient, light, bagless, portable, etc., there is one thing that is insanely ridiculous about the Dynamite Plus' design. All of that powerful suckiing power shoots right out a front grill of the vacuum. Like a tornado!!!! The first time I used it was in the kitchen it it literally blew all of the photos and notes off my... 4/5 PhotoGraphics (Arizona) - See all my reviews, December 6, 2007

    Good for small spaces

You really can't beat the price for the quality and ability of this little vacuum cleaner. But beware, it is little, best for smaller spaces or an apartment. The suction and hose attachment function well. It's very portable and easy to remove the canister. Although getting all the debris out of it takes a good amount of shaking. All in all a nice option if you don't have a lot of square footage and want a light, little cleaner. 3/5 HelpfulInfo "D" (Mahwah, NJ) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) As Good As Recommended

Haven't had the unit long enough to be very critical. The unit is only 7 amps but seems to pick up dirt like a 10 amp, lots of power to work the brush's and suck up the dirt. So far it seems to be a good value for the money.**** CAUTION:Amazon recommended purchasing replacementbelt and filter with the Dynamite vaccum except that they recommended the WRONG belt and filter. Having not purchased the Dynamite before I went with what Amazon recommended which turned out to be the F-12 belt and F-1 Hepa Filter which are incorrect. The Dynamite vaccum uses a F-15 belt and a F-2 Hepa Filter so be very careful to order the correct belt and filter if you decide to order this vaccum...do not rely on Amazon's recommendations or their customer service. 4/5 usgabear - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good choice for small areas/hard floors; bagged versions also available

I needed a very compact vac to use mainly in the bathroom to clean up after haircuts. I've been using a cordless model but lacked the power to get the job done to my satisfaction. So, the hunt began for a compact corded model.I looked at several hand-held units that offered a hose attachment. But, while they would have been fine for counter top work, I would have had to crouch or kneel down to get the floor done. Stick brooms would work fine on the floor, but didn't have the attachments for counter work. That left a canister. I have several other Bissell products that have worked well, so thought I'd give the Zing a shot. Overall, it's an excellent product considering the price. The suction power is outstanding - I'd put it on a par with my Panasonic cannister vac that cost much, much more. In fact, the suction is a little too good - it will easily suck up hair cutting attachments if you're not careful. Zero complaints in terms of power. No complaints... 4/5 Comdet - See all my reviews, April 17, 2011

The floor attachment needs a better design

I'll start by saying this vacuum is NOT for carpets, period. It doesn't have any kind of beater bar and doesn't glide over carpet at all. I got this to do quick post-toddler dinner clean ups. The vacuum unit itself has a good design and plenty of suction. It is lightweight and would be great to carry around using the hose itself to clean nooks and crannies, but this ability is limited to nooks and crannies since it is blatantly missing a drapery or upholstery attachment. After going across my hardwood floors it sucked up quite a bit of dirt and lint & I didn't think my floors were that dirty. My complaint is that the floor attachment needs to be redesigned, which is too bad because it's primarily why I bought this unit. The part that slides accross the floor is maybe 8 inches wide or so, but really only the middle maybe 2 inches has a hole for suction. The rest of it doesn't, well, suck. There's not even an opening for it. I'm not sure why the thing is even 8 inches wide, it could... 3/5 Katie Kate "Kate" - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great lightweight vacuum

I am a young bachelor who hates vacuuming and hates schlepping a vacuum up the spiral staircase to the third floor. This little vacuum made both of those activities relatively painless. It is extremely lightweight but still sucks well (in layman's terms) on both carpet and hardwood floors. It also doesn't take up much closet space. The only fault I can find with this vacuum is that there is no place to clip on the one alternate attachment, but it's a very minor issue. I would heartily recommend this vacuum to anyone, but especially to housework-haters like myself, college students, and elderly or petite people looking for a very lightweight, easily portable vacuum. 5/5 Anonymous - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Excellent vacuum !

This is the best vacuum I've had yet for hard wood floors. I have 1 child, 2 cats ,a dog and a bird and it literally was a breeze on all of their mess, such as candy wrappers, hair, cat litter and seeds. We have a large townhouse and I could do the first-floor and steps without having to replug somewhere else. The dirt canister is larger than I thought it would be and the suction was great! It's also very easy to clean. It is lightweight and easy to handle and the micro-fresh filter only needs to be replaced 2 times a year ... (Now that makes me breathe easy). The only thing I can come up with that I would change on this vac is that it does not have a retractable cord. 5/5 Raven_Fan (Baltimore, Md USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) It's OK

I bought this vacuum cleaner for the air filter because, at the time, it was about ... less than a HEPA filter vacuum. I also wanted to try a bagless vacuum cleaner. The suck power of this vacuum is good, but not about to pull up any carpet. I found that having a bagless is not all it's cracked up to be - especially since trash and dirt are affected by static electricity and don't always pour right out. Make sure you clean the filter outside -- banging it around inside the house will just put dust back into the air. The vacuum is compact and stores well. I'm a little displeased with the handles, though. I don't think they're air tight enough.3 stars means I'm satisfied, but when it's time to get a new vacuum I'll look for a different one. 3/5 M. A. Suits our needs and pocketbook perfectly!

For hard surface floors with pets (dog, cats, bird) & kids this vacuum is perfect. It is light-weight and compact, easy to use, easy to store. Except the carpet attachment (which we rarely use) accessories attach to the handle, convenient for use & storage. My wife likes the machine because it rolls nicely and is light. I prefer toting it across my back (strap included).Related to other reviewer comments: (1) The new model has only one filter with recommended changing once per year. (2) Suction is very adequate but not what I expected of a 12 amp motor. Perhaps the HEPA filter requires extra horsepower. (3) When the house is really dirty, the cannister is probably best emptied after every room. (4) Less dusty than compressed air, we use a shop vac to clean the cannister and filter. It gets fine dust out of the filter. We feel we have to be careful, however, not to scrape the filter with hard edges of the suction tube. (5) Power cord retraction would be nice, but I am glad... 5/5 R. Knapp (MT USA) - See all my reviews, November 2, 2005

What a difference it makes.-- Very powerful. It sucked a full dirt container from our house.-- Thermal protective device - according to the manual this will shut off the motor to prevent overheating (what our old vacuum did not have)Cons:-- No HEPA filter out of the box but the next time I replace the filter I can get a HEPA filter from Amazon-- To use the hose (on the steps, inside car) I needed to detach the main hose and connect the special hose. The Breeze is a mixe bag(less) of good and not so good

First off, how do you say "mixed bag" about a "bagless" vacuum? Well however you say it, here is my opinion on it - the good and the bad. I purchased mine as a second vac, and despite past nightmares with entry bagless vacs, wanted something I could empty after each occasional use vs. store away with a partly filled bag.On the pro side: This unit is VERY light in weight. Great for those with arthritis or anyone who is carrying a vacuum up and down stairs. What is not lightweight is the power - it definitely has good suction. I also like the slightly narrower width whem compared to most other vacuums - 13" wide vs the more common 15" wide may not seem like much, but this fits in narrow places yet is still a full power vac.On the neutral side: Emptying is easy, but like most entry level bagless units, the filter is a mess to deal with. Best bet is, from time, use a second vac to clean this units filter, or used canned air outside upwind.Attachments are okay... 3/5 A. Maier (Fort Wayne, IN) - See all my reviews, May 11, 2008

Built Like a Tank, Sounds Like One, Too!

I've had my Dirt Devil Breeze for (3?+) years now (Obviously an older version but based on what I see from the picture nothing had changed much.) Bought this as replacement to a previous vacuum cleaner which had the "fan" (not sure if this is the correct word for it) that was in the path of the dirt (I believe that was a hoover). I used it to pick up some solid object and got stuck in the "fan" which caused it to break on me. The design of the breeze was a lot better since the filter catches objects before it gets to the suction mechanism. Overall, does what its supposed to do.Cons:- The exhaust out in front was definitely a design "duh". But you wouldn't realize it till you use it for picking up light material (e.g. small bird feathers).- Is there an easier way to switch from bottom suction to the onboard tools?- Emptying the canister is definitely a hassle (but sames me money in the long run)- *LOUD* And I cannot say this enough. Best Electrolux I own

I had Electrolux EL6989A Oxygen Ultra for five and a half years and I liked it; however the quality of the wand wasn't as good so it was time to replace it (even tho I could just replace the wand since vacuum still working). So I got Dyson DC33 and after 2 days of use it went back to the store - it's a complete failure if you used to canister :)After that I decided to pull the trigger on Electrolux UltraActive. I couldn't find any reviews on it; I was only able to find specs and based on that it has more power 2100W vs 1400w in my old one, and also new design for the wand and motorized brush head.So I placed an order on kohls.com and after I got it I was pretty surprised how good it is with a few quirks :)Pros:- It's much quieter than my old Electrolux vacuum- New updated design of the wand and brush head seems more durable- It doesn't use bags (it's bagless vacuum)- It is way more powerful than the old oneQuirks:- After you push... 5/5 A. excellent vacuum cleaner

We wanted to replace our 10 year old upright. I did a lot of research and am very glad I picked this vacuum. We needed a compact vacuum that was good on hardwood floors, area rugs and wall to wall carpet. Also, a hepa filter for my allergic dog. This is a powerful vacuum, I could not believe the dirt we got up that our old vacuum was missing. You can turn off the beater bar on the handle when going from carpet to hardwood or to save the fringe on rugs. It also has a nice big floor brush for hardwood and tile. If you suck up a shoelace or cord it shuts off immediatly to save your belt. The bagless dirt cup is very easy to empty. The length of the wand is adjustable for people of different heights. It's very light and easy to maneuver. It has slow start technology which is better for the motor, so it appears to hesitate when turned on. But, do not accidently pick up the vacuum by the dirt cup handle as it will fall with a crash. Another nice feature is the handle pivots flat to vacuum... 5/5 R. Overall Very Pleased

I just purchased this vacuum after much research to replace my 13 year old vacuum that finally bit the dust. Overall I am very satisfied with it's performance. Since I was very used to my previous vacuum, albeit very old, I used this new vacuum with an eye of scrutiny.Pros:Love that it is bag-less and you can see exactly what and how much it picks up. Feels very sturdy though not overly heavy. I have both hard floors and carpet. Love the large hard floor attachment, I can cover the floor much faster and despite its size is still very maneuverable in tight spots. The carpet brush picks up excellent yet thin enough to get under beds and most furniture and still very maneuverable. Canister is very easy to dump out contents.Cons:The cord could have been a little longer compared to my old vacuum. I have to use a couple different outlets in order to reach all the surface areas. I wanted to write this review because there were somenegative reviews which almost caused me not to buy it, but Ibought it anyway. I decided to wait a few months (4),though, to make sure I really liked it.I do.The negative comments were: *********************1) short cord and owners manual says don't use an extensioncord.2) I have COPD, and somebody said emptying the canisterraised a huge cloud of dust.3) Others stated that the exhaust was on the front of themachine and would blow around the debris you were trying topick up, especially on hardwood floors. ***********************1) This sounded weird, so I got out my calculator. A 25 foot14 gauge extension cord added to the 19 foot cord on themachine gives you a 44 foot cord - 88 feet of copper tocomplete the circuit. This gives you - with the 7 amp motor- a voltage drop of... 5/5 M. Johnston "Mike J" (Colorado) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2011

    Pleasantly surprised

My father bought me this vacuum for Christmas since my old hand me down one finally died. I opened the package and was worried that it wouldn't be very strong considering it's size... WOW. I have a cat and a dog and this thing picked up every single hair in the house. I was shocked to see how much dirt had been in my carpet all this time... and more shocked that this lightweight vac picked it all up. It's great for the stairs too because it's so light. I would recommend this to everyone. 5/5 AKFlorida - See all my reviews This review is from: Dirt Devil Extreme Quick Vac Cyclonic Bagless Upright Vacuum, UD20010 (Kitchen) My father bought me this vacuum for Christmas since my old hand me down one finally died. The God sent, most efficient vacuum that works perfectly both on floors and carpets!

I bought this vacuum because the neavy duty one is too heavy and whenever there is a need to vacuum, I hesitated because of the weight. Now, with this new vacuum, I am excited about cleaning because first, it does the job wonderfully and secondly, light enough to lift on your one hand and third it works both on the floors and carpets, and forth, this vacuum can reach and clean under the bed, shelf, any corners with no problem. My carpets are Persian and not deep carpet. This is more than what I had expected of. I am thankful for the two reviews above I trusted before purchasing it. They are also correct!!Anyone who is considering to buy a heavy-duty one, no need. This is the only one you need in one household. 5/5 mayomequ - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Panasonic Engineering at its BEST

If you want a Dyson-killer and save money to boot, this MC-CL310 vacuum is just the ticket! It is so elegant and simple in design, you can take it out of the box and assemble the few components in mere seconds. Then off to dust sucking land you go! The device is essentially a dust-buster on steroids, but it works through the suction wand even though it's so lightweight you'd be curious to try it as a hand-vac. The multiple filters design is great at preventing blowback of fine dust into your environment while you vacuum. It has a coarse "funnel" filter to direct incoming particles into the generously sized chute. Then that air is filtered through a fine particle smooth mesh filter so that tiny heavy dirt falls back into the chute. After that, a superfine particulate cleanable paper filter, much like the ones in car intakes, keeps microdust from entering the suction motor assembly. Finally, there is a nifty HEPA filter that cleans the exit air. NO more coughing and runny nose... 5/5 Marvin Lee Jr. (Glendale, CA United States) - See all my reviews, September 5, 2011

    light weight but heavy duty

I bought this vacuum to replace an upright vacuum. I like this product because it is light weight, works well on floors and carpets, also easy to vacuum stairs because it is light weight. It does not take up a lot of space, is easy to move around with and reach under furniture which an upright cannot do. The power cord rolls up with a press of a button which is a nice feature. 5/5 R. Great Vacuum for the Money, Not Suitable for Heavy Duty Commercial

We have this vacuum cleaner for use in our offices at work. Those that are considering this vacuum cleaner need to understand this is not a heavy duty vacuum cleaner, its basically an old school basic Hoover vacuum cleaner with a dirt cup (so you don't have to buy bags) and a commercial cord (longer than normal cords). Do no expect it to handle big commercial cleaning jobs. I read some reviews and it just seemed that people had unrealistic expectations from this vacuum cleaner. This vacuum cleaner is ideal for housekeepers or maid cleaning services as well as for office cleaning ie. light commercial use. The vacuum cleaner does an excellent job on our carpets and rugs. Just be aware it is not a heavy duty vacuum cleaner. If you want a heavy duty Hoover vacuum cleaner spend the extra money and get one. But if you want a simple, easy to use, lightweight vacuum cleaner that can effectively deep clean carpets than this vacuum is for you. The only thing I don't like about it and... 4/5 Rob A. - See all my reviews This review is from: Hoover C1415 Elite Bagless Commercial Upright Vacuum with EZ-Empty Dust Cup (Office Product) We have this vacuum cleaner for use in our offices at work. Worst Vacumm EVER!!!

I work on a Construction site and alot of dust gets tracked into our job trailer. So once a week we clean the trailer and vacumm the carpet. We purchased this vacumm brand new and from the very first time we used it all it did was pick up the dust and shoot it back out. There is no seal between the bin and the bag so any fine dust will be shot out anywhere air escapes. If your looking to create massive dust clouds this is the vacumm for you, otherwise do not purchase this vacumm it is very very poorly built. 1/5 David (NY) - See all my reviews This review is from: Hoover C1415 Elite Bagless Commercial Upright Vacuum with EZ-Empty Dust Cup (Office Product) I work on a Construction site and alot of dust gets tracked into our job trailer. OK, for the most part

These vacuums are fine. Just fine. Not extraordinary. I purchased 4 of these and within a few days, one of them started smoking. I had to contact hoover customer service, which told me I had to drive 40 minutes to the closest Sears "service center," to have this repaired. Not very convenient. The other three work ok. They can't take a lot of abuse, though, as you would expect one that has a sticker saying "Perfect for Hotels" would be very durable. The bag clip broke on a couple of them. Of course our staff doesn't take the greatest care of them, but they're not as strong as they should be. 3/5 David E. Blair (North Carolina) - See all my reviews, July 4, 2011

    Excellent Vacuum for Price

I have two dogs, and have owned Dyson, Kenmore and other vacuums, none have lifted dirt and dog hair like this vacuum does at a fraction of the price that I had paid for the Dyson. The vacuum easily comes apart and all parts can be cleaned. The self-propelled feature is necessary since this is a heavy vacuum. The best feature for me is the ability to fully remove the agitator brush roll to remove the pet hair. Well-designed and easy to assemble and operate. Unfortunately, due to poor shipping, the vacuum box was damaged and the unit itself received some exterior damage. It might be better to find this product on sale in the store. 5/5 bdavid (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews, March 7, 2010

    Freakishly powerful

This vacuum sucks. It sucks so hard that you can put it on linoleum and crumbs and peas will start rolling towards it from over a foot away. It actually damages the carpet a little bit every time I use it. It should say *Singularity Inside! the suction is that powerful. When I received the item it required some assembly. My first impression was that the on/off slider mechanism was pretty weak. So far it's held up over a year of use. The screws I felt were also pretty weak. I wanted to tighten down the beater bar cover good but I felt like either the screw or the screwhole threading would strip easily if I applied too much force.Once it was all assembled it was impressive. I had misgivings about the green/red dirt detector feature but it totally works as advertised. The red light reliably goes on in front of the door where, despite removing my shoes beforehand, beach sand is usually deposited. HEPA filters seem almost standard now but it's a nice addition. UPDATE

UPDATE FOR REVIEW BELOW:Okay...fifteen days before the two year warranty was to expire...it quit charging. With a deep breath, I contacted customer service. I was initially told to take it to the nearest service center which was 45 miles away. I said that was too far for me and was transferred to someone else who promptly gave me instructions to send a clip of the power card and the manufacturer sticker on the back of the vac and they would send a replacement. Exactly six days later, FedEx delivered my replacement vac! I am stunned..this kind of warranty back up just is not seen in America. So, the vac lasted two years which is twice as long as my Shark vac lasted and the prouduct warranty was actually honored by the company! Yes, it can be a bother to have to keep that filter clean, but again, it is a great little helper when it comes to keeping the basement family room picked up and for quick pick up throuhout the house. Thank you Dirt Devil for a great product... 5/5 D. Ackley (Easton, PA) - See all my reviews, December 7, 2009

my favorite vacuum cleaner for about 2 yrs now...

bought this on amazon to replace my order one... the older one worked great until.. I broke it.... I slammed it against something hard and it broke completely.. don't ask me why... but that happened and I had to replace it with a new one..CONS-the suction isn't the best...user has to hold the vacuum at a specific angle for the suction to be perfect..-only good for small waste and dust... bigger waste tend to stuck and the user has to dig it out with fingers...PROS-the charge time is very short-does not take any room so for people who care about the interior look - this will look fine and sometimes unnoticeable if you put it right beside a little table or in the corner.-easy grip and easy usage-for students and for people with apts (studios to 1 bedroom) this is a very good vacuum !!!for me Iuse it almost everyday to clean out everyday dust and my dog's fur off the floor, and it's a very good product for what... 4/5 Hyun Jun Kim "Josh Kim" (NY, USA) - See all my reviews, December 28, 2009

    Perfect for what it is

This vacuum is perfect for what it is. I like the fact that the Accucharge won't drain the battery like what happened on my Dustbuster. This does need pretty frequent cleaning to keep up the suction, although that's not difficult at all. The Dirt Devil makes a very loud, high pitched noise, especially if it's not 100% clean, but I can totally live with that. It's been so nice to have this to clean up after our shedding dog and dirt from our kid's feet. The rotating brush does help picking up dirt from our carpet. We use this vacuum almost daily. 4/5 krispin "krispin" (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
