Extra Lives, Why Video Games Matter

Creator: Tom Bissell | Games - 2011-06-14

Yet few outside this world have thought deeply about how these games work, why they are so appealing, and what they are capable of artistically.

Publisher: Vintage Books

About this book
In Extra Lives, acclaimed writer and life-long video game enthusiast Tom Bissell takes the reader on an insightful and entertaining tour of the art and meaning of video games. In just a few decades, video games have grown increasingly complex and sophisticated, and the companies that produce them are now among the most profitable in the entertainment industry. Yet few outside this world have thought deeply about how these games work, why they are so appealing, and what they are capable of artistically. Blending memoir, criticism, and first-rate reportage, Extra Lives is a milestone work about what might be the dominant popular art form of our time.

The Father of All Things, A Marine, His Son, and the Legacy of Vietnam

Creator: Tom Bissell | History - 2009-03-25

This book is his son Tom's reckoning with the Vietnam War and its impact on his father, his country, and Vietnam itself.

Publisher: Vintage

About this book
In April 1975, as Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese Army, former Marine officer John Bissell was glued to his television, racked with anguish and horror as his country abandoned a cause for which so many of his friends had died. This book is his son Tom's reckoning with the Vietnam War and its impact on his father, his country, and Vietnam itself. Bissell also explores the many debates about the war, and shows how the war has continued to influence American views on foreign policy more than thirty years later. At the heart of the book is John and Tom Bissell's journey back to Vietnam. As they travel the country and talk to Vietnamese veterans, we relive the war as John Bissell experienced it, visit the site of his near-fatal wounding, and hear him explain how Vietnam shaped him and so many of his generation.--From publisher description.

The Scent of God, A Memoir

Creator: Beryl Singleton Bissell | Biography & Autobiography - 2007-04-02

When Beryl Bissell Entered A cloistered convent in New Jersey, she believed that God had called her to this way of life.

Publisher: Counterpoint LLC

About this book
When Beryl Bissell Entered A cloistered convent in New Jersey, she believed that God had called her to this way of life. At first blissfully happy, within a year she became prey to obsessive compulsions. Her vocation at risk, she overcame these disorders, and persevered for another ten years until returning home to Puerto Rico to care for her ailing father. Thrust into this sensual environment, she was drawn to Padre Vittorio, a handsome Italian priest, and underwent a belated coming of age. For the next three years, she struggled to reconcile human desire with spiritual longing. In spare but lyric language, Bissell weaves a powerful story of love, death, guilt, and redemption--a pilgrimage that reaches beyond dogma to personal truth and evokes a transformation that changes not only Beryl but the lives of those whom she most loves.

Works well, but read the directions!

We have only used this concentrated solution with our Bissell Spotbot Pet. Since the formula container for the Spotbot has markings on the side that tell how much formula to add, and we didn't know a non-concentrated formula had ever been available, we were using twice as much (or more) formula as was needed. This meant we ran out of formula quite quickly! I just finally read the back of the bottle (duh!) and found that you're supposed to add two capfuls to the container and fill with hot water up to the formula line. Oops! So, if you use the concentrated formula, be sure you read the instructions first! While the formula works well, it has a very strong (though pleasant) odor, which might give a sensitive person an allergic reaction. I'd recommend using this product with the windows open for your first time in case that happens to you. 5/5 L. A. Garner "Even an earthquake can't interr... For Pet Stains AND Husband Stains....

Well our 2 older cats (Lucy & Ethel) don't get sick often at all. For that I am grateful since I (the husband) am retired, and stuck to face whatever disaster comes while the wife is at work. But I am squeamish when it even comes to scooping their "you know what" when it is time and actually wear a gas mask if forced to do that job. I may be a USMC Combat Veteran, but I draw the line at liter boxes & Diapers! I may be brave, but I AIN'T no HERO! My wife just bought an upright steam cleaner from Eureka since all our carpet is now about 20 years old. It was expensive carpet and we have no kids so it has worn extremely well but is still getting tired. And since I retired I keep getting into trouble for bringing in grease or oil stains after working on our motorcycles or motor scooters. No matter what I do, I am always getting into trouble one way or the other. It's kind of like I am a 62 year old Dennis The Menace according to the wife? Well her big & expensive steam cleaner... 5/5 USMC Combat Vet "Retired!" (Oceanside, California) - See all my reviews, October 27, 2010

    Pretty good for small stains

I was drawn to this product because of its promise to effortlessly tackle set-in stains, of which there are several in my often-used den thanks to my cat and two-year-old. The Spotbot was pretty easy to set up right out of the box, and it came with two solution bottles. Once I started to use it on the first problematic area, I realized the limitations. It is, indeed, a SPOT bot, meaning that it can only handle a very small circular area, about six inches in diameter, during one five-minute cleaning cycle. For small stains, this is fine and the product works well. But for those of us with a larger area, or several small stains, it will take a great deal of time and effort to use the Spotbot. The two bottles that came with the product were completely used up after three cleaning cycles.I last used the Spotbot about two weeks ago, and before writing this review, I revisited the spots since, according to the paperwork, it could take as long as 72 hours for the cleaning... 3/5 a - See all my reviews, November 10, 2010

Excellent portable cleaner...except for noise level

I was very happy to recieve the Bissel Spotbot cleaner as I've had some extremely stubborn organic BUT not pet-based stains in my carpet.(Though I'm glad I do have it for when we do get a dog in the near future.)The stairs and the area around our TV are the most difficult areas to keep up with spot cleaning due to foot traffic, frequency food and drink spills, and awkwardness of reaching many of the stains.I normally use an Earth-friendly spot spray that generaaly does a good job if I get to the stain quick enough, but as I said I have some very stubborn areas. The day the Spotbot arrived, I immediately set it to work on an area on the stairs.NOTE: read ALL of the instructions before starting AND make sure the cap on the HOT water tank is secured properly before putting the tank in place or you'll have a spillout like I did.The Spotbot is super easy to use, but not brainless.Back to the stairs... 4/5 Jarucia Jaycox Nirula "~A Pink American" (Seattle, WA, USA) - See all my reviews, November 9, 2010

Bissell Proheat 2x Select Pet Did a very good job

Hi.We bought this model at a local retail store last weekend. I had used a different model of the same brand previously (borrowed from in-laws). I have used it once, on my entire living room--a cream colored cheap wall-to-wall carpet laid down about 3 years ago by the previous owners. Probably artificial fibers. Just saying. The carpet was getting spotty. We have a cat who has hairballs regularly and two four-year-olds. The cream colored carpet was showing spots around the kids computer, both couches, and the high-traffic areas at each doorway. We had some washable-marker marks here and there, and one sticky place. We live in the south so we had red clay marks, too.I assembled the machine--had to get a long, thin screwdriver from the garage because the kind with the changeable tips is too fat for the holes in the upper handle. Assembly was easy, but I was left with an extra wand that had no home. Ours came with a small, medium, and large unpowered... 4/5 K. Very Good - Met Expectations!

My wife and I have two dogs, a 2 year old child and the cheap white/beige colored carpet that I'm sure everyone has seen before. It came with our house when we bought it. We have been living here for 3 years and you don't realize how dirty your carpets actually get until you clean them. It came to a point where I could not stand to be in my house because the carpets got so bad. As if the dogs weren't enough, my daughter spilled liquid bubbles everywhere and dirt attaches to the fluid like a magnet. We bought this bissell a week ago and finally finished using it this past weekend. I'm very happy with the results. My carpet looks A LOT better!!Pros:- It is very easy to use after you understand how to use it.- If you compare, side by side, the section you cleaned next to an area you didn't get to yet you will notice that it does a really good job.- The carpets barely get wet and dry incredibly fast for that reason.Cons:- You really need to... 4/5 Pittsburgh Nate (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL ProHeat 2X Select Pet Upright Deep Cleaner, 94003 (Kitchen) My wife and I have two dogs, a 2 year old child and the cheap white/beige colored carpet that I'm sure everyone has seen before. Sprayer Will Breakdown - Bissell Service Awful

I've owned three of these Bissell models over the past four years. The first (2006) lasted nearly 18 months and about as many carpet cleanings. Eventually the spray system broke. Since it was out of warranty it was not worth getting fixed. The second (2008) lasted 13 months. Same story, the spray system broke. The third, this year, last 4 months and 3 carpet cleanings. Under warranty I called Bissell, got the names of two service centers but when I called them they both told me the same thing: Bissell was not going to warrant the spray system unless it was a manufacturer's defect.Being prudent, I called Bissell and went through a 30 trouble shooting session over the phone. It was grueling. Check this gasket, that gasket, take out the spray nozzles, get an old toothbrush and clean the sprayer, try the hose, re-seat the water tank, re-seat the soap tank, try the hose again, chew some gum, run the machine for a minute, walk on the... 1/5 chaztv "chaztv" (the beach, NJ) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL ProHeat 2X Select Pet Upright Deep Cleaner, 94003 (Kitchen) I've owned three of these Bissell models over the past four years. The first (2006) lasted nearly 18 months and about as many carpet cleanings. If it weren't for the handle...

I bought this at Lowes Home Improvement for 9.97 - it's their regular price. The handle pieces do come out but don't despair! I had some carpet tape (double-sided) lying around and wrapped only a small piece around each end before I put it back together. It works like a charm. For how long, I don't know, but for the price I paid and how well it works otherwise, it will be worth investing in another role of tape in about a hundred years or so.I can't drag the vacuum out all the time, don't want to and besides the dogs go nuts. This works as well as the carpet sweeper I remember pushing around as a little girl so I gave it an extra star for nostalgia. Gets all crumbs (don't expect it to get ground in dog hair) and gets all lint & small things you'd normally drag out the Hoover for. And No electricty needed!! If you miss the sound however, you can always hum! 4/5 Terry T "Peak Mom" (Apex, NC United States) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL Swift Sweep Sweeper, 2201-2 (Kitchen) I bought this at Lowes Home Improvement for 9.97 - it's their regular price. Worth the price

I have used my sweeper about 3 times now and it works quite well on our Pergo (laminate) floors...it picked up cat hair, crumbs, small leaves with no problem. It also works pretty well on our low pile carpet (again, crumbs, cat hair and grass) as well as the throw rugs in the kitchen (dried coffee grounds). As another reviewer mentioned, the handle fell apart the first time I used it, but black electrical tape is a good fix. I like the fact that I don't have to drag out the big, heavy vacuum cleaner and scare the cat (due to the noise)! 4/5 Desert Kat (Palm Desert, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: BISSELL Swift Sweep Sweeper, 2201-2 (Kitchen) I have used my sweeper about 3 times now and it works quite well on our Pergo (laminate) floors...it picked up cat hair, crumbs, small leaves with no problem. Bissell sweeper...

This is a good little sweeper. I got it to sweep-up cat litter on low pile carpet between my vacuumings; and that it does. I esp. like the comb (included) that comes in handy when you're cleaning the bristles, it then attaches to the sweeper's pole so you don't loose it--nice feature, it's made of all metal construction so it won't crack like the plastic ones do. Thanks the heavens

My husband, albiet not from here, picked up this little gem after calling him and relaying that our son dumped the entire contents of a chocolate syrup bottle on his bedroom carpet. Home he came with this bissell. Only one they had at the store.Assembly in two seconds, I kid you not. Didn't even need to look at the instructions. put in the cleaning solution, filled reservoir with water, set it down, plugged it in. Now, mind you, it took me about ten minutes, with a few minutes between each go, this syrup was well and good in the carpet, but I am deeply impressed. Throughly impressed. It's very light, even filled, it's compact, fits real nicely into our cleaning closet, and super easy to use. For the price we paid, it's paid for itself halfway with just the one room, compared to getting our carpets steam cleaned every few months. I would happily buy again. 5/5 Gerald L. W. great performance, poor design

Let's hope the Little Green is a precursor to greater models. I have owned a larger model Bissell for nearly 2 decades and am fully aware of its reputation for getting things clean. I decided I wanted a smaller, more portable model for my car, the stairs, furniture, and small stains due to people and pets. This way I would only have to lug out the larger model for the large jobs like the carpeting, which is truly a once in a blue moon event. With a little vigorous scrubbing and chemical solutions, virtually any stain is a thing of the past, however I have come to realize certain design characteristics could be better. When I clean the stairs, I can't keep the unit more or less than two stairs away at all times. A step closer and it's too close to my cleaning area. A step down and the hose just won't allow me to reach. If only the hose could be a little longer it would help immensely. I also find the base of the unit hovers over the edge by a couple inches, which doesn't... 4/5 Scott Cherry (northern Virginia) - See all my reviews, July 3, 2008

    Love it!

I had read reviews for it a few years ago, and the negative reviews convinced me that it wasn't worth buying. Why buy something when I could clean better without it? I got it as a christmas present a few months ago. It has some issues, but I'm still giving it five stars because I still love it!SUCTION: It is true that the Little Green is not as powerful as a regular steam cleaner. But the suction is still pretty good. If you hold incorrectly, the opening isn't pressed against the carpeting and so it won't suck anything up. You have to make sure that the opening is sealed against the carpet. Once you know what angle to hold it at, it is easy to get it right. Just what you need for Microsuede couches!!!

After having a baby with reflux, two cats, a husband, and ME using tan microsuede couches for almost 4 yrs, I was about to pay to have them professionally cleaned. When I looked into the cost of that, I then started looking for upholstery cleaning machines. With microsuede, if you dont remove all of the water, a horrible watermark is left and these compound over time and make the appearance of the fabric look awful. I knew that whatever I purchased was going to have to be able to remove the cleaning fluid AND clean really well. This product not only meets my standards, but exceeds them! Worked like a charm and will save us tons of money in the future since we have a new baby coming in 6 wks!FYI, included with the machine is an 8oz bottle of the cleaner (Advanced Stain). I bought a 32oz bottle along with the bissell because I wasn't sure how much I was going to need per cleaning (only a few ozs!!!) and wasn't sure if any came with the machine. The 8 oz... 5/5 Nicole Joniec (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews, March 25, 2010

    Best mistake made this week

After reading reviews on Amazon, I sent my grandson to buy locally the Bissell SpotBot Pet Carpet Cleaner. He had not seen what I wanted, and brought this home by mistake. It is the best spot carpet cleaner we could want. The power brush works well, and the vacuum extracts the filth and water, so the restored carpet dries quickly. My house is a severe test, since we have multiple pets, and the less said the better. We have used other carpet-cleaning products with this, besides the little bottle included, and they work well, and the machine has not clogged. 5/5 Mary Ann - See all my reviews, December 22, 2009

    Great Vaccum with cool upholstery

My 3 year old dirtdevil Vacuum cleaner gave up and I headed to the research room on Amazon to consider a replacement. After extensive research I zeroed in on this and Hoover 5507-900. Hoover was more expensive and did not have the tools and upholstery available on this Vacuum. I still had my doubts on Bissell hence I headed to Target to check the Vacuum myself. I was impressed with what I saw and I ordered this on Amazon.Out of the box this Vacuum was very easy to assemble and quite user friendly. The motor was very powerful and it cleaned the dirt from the carpet with ease. It also had adjustable knob for power variation and had one for bare-floor surfaces. The dirt container was very easy to replace and the extra dusting brush with extension wand made hard to reach places very easy to clean. Whats more this vacuum worked like charm on my Vacuum storage bags. It removed the air out of the bag in 30 seconds flat.I would definitely recommend this Vacuum cleaner... 5/5 Venkateswaran Tarakad (Matawan, NJ) - See all my reviews, September 24, 2009

It passed the Black Sofa Test

The vacuum just came in. I took it out of the box, and it took all of two minutes to assemble. I ran it over the rugs of my two-bedroom apartment and it picked up everything in its path. I noticed the tank needed to be dumped more than my Hoover Wind Tunnel, but it's a good trade-off, because once the bottom of the Wind Tunnel's tank got full, it just gave up.What I was really looking to give it--being a pet owner--was the extreme test on my black, cloth, sofa. Unlike other vacuum's that come with a nozzle surrounded by brushes that just seem to push the pet hair around, this comes with a turbo brush, which is like a mini version of the vacuum's main turbo brush. It cleaned off the sofa in minutes and left it spotless.I know it's new, so as to how it wears, I can't tell you. But, I normally can tell within a few minutes whether I've spent well, or spent bad.I would say this was money well spent. 5/5 W. A. H. Decent value

I wanted a second cleaner so that I wouldn't have to lug a machine between floors. This fits the bill as an upright and performs well. The vacuum hose is so short that it's a joke. I tried to use the attachments once and its a waste of time. In addition, dirt was exhausted from the storage port for the hose. Unbelieveable! The handle is nothing but a cheap piece of molded plastic. The electical cord is attached to the middle of the machine, as is the on/off switch. This results in a lot of stooping to turn the cleaner on or off and you must hold the cord, else you will step on it.The vacuum has 3 filters, two of which can be cleaned with soap and water. After a month the HEPA filter shows no accumulation and will not need replacement for a long time. The filtering system is efficient - there is no evidence that any dirt is returned to the room.Since everything that is sucked up is visible frequent emptying and filter cleaned is encouraged. A good thing. Bottom... 3/5 Paul R. Herholz Jr. (Northern Virginia) - See all my reviews, November 21, 2009

Perfect cordless carpet cleaner for pets

I bought the Bissell SpotLifter 2X to replace an older Bissell model that finally wore out after 5 years. We have 3 indoor cats that frequently soil our rugs and carpeting, so a quick and easy carpet cleaner is a must. The old version worked well, but this model works even better. The suction is much improved, and this model cleans our rugs and carpet much better than its previous version. Battery life is excellent -- we have used this cleaner several times over the past few weeks and still have yet to recharge the battery (the instructions recommend recharging only after the battery runs down to maximize battery life). The cleaning solution is readily available at places like Target and inexpensive. It is easy to empty the collection chamber after cleaning. If you want a simple, affordable, rechargeable, cordless spot carpet cleaner, this is the one to buy. If the SpotLifter 2X lasts even half as long as the one it replaces it will have been a very good... 5/5 Terry R. Nye (Kingsport, TN) - See all my reviews, February 17, 2008

    Bissell:the quicker, picker-upper

First off, I bought this at Target for $40 before I read these reviews. So I am going to comment on the previous reviews.1. This is not a whole room cleaner like Hoover Steamvac, so don't expect the same thing (but I will make comparisons).2. Water does spit out of the motor vents WHEN the dirty water container is full (which is less than an inch in this thing). Remember this is for spots!3. No, there isn't alot of water that comes up from the carpet because there's not alot of soap being sprayed out of the sprayer. And most of it is in bubble form.4. Yes, the dirty water container does need to be pulled off (and on) at an angle. I have a dustbuster, so I'm used to the "angle" thing.5. Don't expect suction like a Hoover Steamvac (which is plugged into the wall) from this machine (which is battery operated).6. I haven't had any problems with the rubber seals on my machine.7. Sometimes this... 4/5 C. Holt "love renewed" (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews, August 2, 2006

A great tool with some unfortunate issues

This one replaced our original spot lifter bought in 2002. The old model was a little smaller and had a little less suction. The new one now is bigger, heavier and has more suction, but it is not better.First, the unit spits sucked up fluid from the motor air vents apparently sucking cleaning solution through the liquid trap in the canister and into the engine. This does not damage anything, but if you clean up house pet messes, you don't want some of that stuff come shooting out of the air vents, right?Further, the canister is difficult to attach and you have to get it angled just right to snap into position. Oterhwise it will not go in.It surprises me that Bissel has gone backwards in functionality of this great tool. The original unit we had was great, functioned great and none of the problems this new unit has. They are also clearly engineering or design flaws that were not present in the older model. 3/5 Cheap-n-Easy (Triad, NC) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Have you tried cleaning without this?

I hate to burst everyone's bubble. I've used this product with my Spotbot, because it came with it. I've used it in my Hoover Steamvac. I've used both the Spotbot and Steamvac without it. I have two kids and a dog that pees everywhere and I see no difference.Spotbot is an excellent spot cleaner and it works perfectly well without OxyGen. I get all sorts of spots out with it and no need for OxyGen. Perhaps that's why everyone is getting such marvelous results. It's the Spotbot with regular detergent, not the OxyGen.One big drawback to using OxyGen is the Spotbot manual instructs us to discard the unused solution if it contains OxyGen, meaning I can't leave it in my Spotbot. I don't have to do that with plain regular detergent. Since I must mix the OxyGen with water and detergent, I have to discard the detergent and OxyGen, which feels like a waste.Personally, I don't think this product does any harm. It just doesn't do much good. Spend the... 1/5 Noname - See all my reviews, December 23, 2008

    Can Get Expensive Fast

A bottle was included in the Bissell SpotBot box along with sample bottles of the regular carpet cleaner. The sample bottle was used up quickly because so much must be added to fill the SpotBot cleaning reservoir up to the OXYGEN2 line. I didn't notice any difference in results on the carpet whether or not I used this "next generation of oxygen boost", so I didn't buy any more of it until recently. Several spots on the carpet hadn't come clean even after several cycles with the SpotBot. Even a spritz of the normally reliable Rug Doctor spot cleaner couldn't remove those recalcitrant spots. For seven dollars, the 32-ounce container of OXYGEN2 was worth a gamble. I was curious to see how it would fare. The TestsThe SpotBot is a small machine that cleans carpet stains with a solution of water, cleaner, and, if desired, some OXYGEN2. It's programmed to squirt on the solution, agitate the area with its circular brush, and then vacuum up the liquid. My favorite house-cleaning tool.

I have used this every day for years (I can't remember how many--but at least four years). I recently bought a new one only because I was afraid of scratching my floors due to the rollers not turning as well as they had before. I moved the old one down to my basement work area, and use the new one in the main living areas.I have three dogs (previously four) and two house rabbits, all of whom go through times of heavy shedding. During those times I sometimes vacuum certain areas twice a day. There has never been any maintenance problem with this vacuum cleaner. The suction is strong enough for me to do my rag rugs and area rugs, and the rollers don't scratch my wood floors. It's easy on my back, conveniently converts to a hand vac, and is easy to take out and use at a moment's notice (no tedious unwinding of long cord). One reviewer did write that this vacuum is hard to clean. I clean mine by dumping the bulk of the debris into the trash, then vacuuming the... 5/5 Ruth Henriquez Lyon (Duluth, Minnesota USA) - See all my reviews, July 28, 2010

    It Does Suck...

and that's a good thing... i have this model, a 3106-1 - the Bissell Featherweight Bagless, and a very similar model from the same manufacturer (both are made in China), the 38B1-3 - the Bissell 3-in-1 Vac...these are nearly identical and cost exactly the same locally and on-line... i say 'nearly identical,' as they weigh the same, have the same length cord, share the same ergonomics (handle, cord storage, assembly, emptying, etc.), and similar suction...rest assured that this model will work just as well, if not better than the 3-in-1... but here are the differences:- this model has a 1.2A motor, whereas the 3-in-1 has a 2A motor - nod to 3-in-1- both models come with a crevice tool, as does the 3-in-1 - even score- this model has an opaque canister, so you cannot see how much dirt has been vac'd, whereas the 3-in-1 is translucent - nod to 3-in-1 - one star off on my review- both models are easy to empty - even... 3/5 willie "roadie" (pineapple park, FL, USA) - See all my reviews, October 1, 2010
